Odds and Ends: Laird, Mitsui, Snyder

By Tim Dierkes | December 9, 2008 at 2:22am CDT

Links for Tuesday…

  • Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald describes a casino alert regarding potential inside information due to the Winter Meetings.
  • ESPN’s Keith Law isn’t thrilled with the Tigers’ acquisition of Gerald Laird.
  • Michael S. Schmidt gives a peek at the Boras Book for Greg Maddux.  One client for which exaggeration is unnecessary.
  • Patrick Newman of NPB Tracker says the Seibu Lions will post 35 year-old lefty reliever Koji Mitsui.  Another southpaw option to consider; he’s not expected to cost much.
  • Newman also says the Orioles may offer two-year, $10MM contracts to both Kenshin Kawakami and Koji Uehara.
  • Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic says the D’Backs have had brief, preliminary talks on an extension for Chris Snyder and they’ll resume soon.

Rangers Could Still Trade Another Catcher

By Tim Dierkes | December 8, 2008 at 3:58pm CDT

3:58pm: Both Peter Gammons and Ken Rosenthal are saying the Rangers could still trade another catcher (for a young starter).  Gammons cites Salty specifically.

10:48am: WEEI’s Alex Speier takes a look at the market for catching.

  • Dodgers GM Ned Colletti is on record saying he’s "probably not" interested in Jason Varitek.
  • The Red Sox, Reds, Marlins, and Astros continue to hunt for catching.
  • Speier talked to an official who believes the Rangers would have to be overwhelmed to trade a second catcher.  Keeping in mind that Max Ramirez may have to move out from behind the plate, it may make sense to just let Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Taylor Teagarden compete for the job.
  • The Red Sox have talked to the Indians about Kelly Shoppach; the Reds like him as well.  The Indians would want a big league second baseman, third baseman, or closer back for Shoppach.  The Indians have not entertained offers for Victor Martinez.
  • The D’Backs would like a second baseman or pitching for Miguel Montero or Chris Snyder.

D’Backs Listening On Snyder

By Tim Dierkes | November 13, 2008 at 3:48pm CDT

We know D’Backs catcher Miguel Montero has been a popular name in recent trade talks, but ESPN’s Buster Olney says they could choose to deal the more expensive backstop:

Rival executives, by the way, perceive that the Diamondbacks will definitely listen to offers for Chris Snyder, who is highly respected by advance scouts but is marching steadily through arbitration and is becoming expensive.

Snyder, 28 in February, hit .237/.348/.452 in 404 plate appearances this year.  He earned $1.85MM in ’08, and is under team control through 2010.
