Yankees Acquire David Huff, Designate Wade LeBlanc For Assignment

By Steve Adams | June 11, 2014 at 6:11pm CDT

6:11pm: The Yankees officially announced both moves, noting that the team sent cash considerations to the Giants in exchange for Huff.

5:52pm: The Yankees have acquired left-hander David Huff from the Giants and designated fellow lefty Wade LeBlanc for assignment in order to create roster space, according to Daniel Barbarisi of the Wall Street Journal (on Twitter). Huff had been designated for assignment by the Giants last week. He will be with the Yankees for tonight’s game.

This will mark Huff’s second stint with New York, as he finished the 2013 campaign in Yankee pinstripes. Huff posted a 4.67 ERA with a 26-to-8 K/BB ratio in 34 1/3 innings for the Yanks last season and found himself traded to San Francisco in exchange for cash considerations in late January. With the Giants, Huff pitched to a disappointing 6.30 ERA with 11 strikeouts and six walks in 20 innings. He did manage a career-best 50.7 percent ground-ball rate in his 20 innings with San Fran, in part due to the introduction of a cut-fastball into his repertoire.

LeBlanc pitched just an inning for the Yankees, allowing two runs in his lone appearance. He’s allowed six runs in 7 1/3 innings this season between the Angels and Yankees, and he has a career 4.56 ERA with 6.0 K/9, 3.3 BB/9 and a 35.4 percent ground-ball rate in 424 1/3 innings between the Padres, Marlins, Angels, Yankees and Astros.

Giants Designate David Huff For Assignment

By Jeff Todd | June 6, 2014 at 4:29pm CDT

The Giants have designated lefty David Huff for assignment, reports Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle (via Twitter). The move was made to clear roster space for the return of Matt Cain from the DL.

Huff, 29, came to San Francisco from the Yankees after he lost his roster spot to Masahiro Tanaka. Through 20 innings this season, Huff has scuffled to a 6.30 ERA. He has posted 5.0 K/9 and 2.7 BB/9 on the year, both of which are worse than the marks he put up in each of the last two seasons.

The former first-round pick came up as a starter with the Indians, but shifted primarily to the bullpen last year. He has been solid against same-handed hitters thus far in 2014, allowing just a .659 OPS, but righties have hit a blistering .354/.415/.479 against him.

Giants Acquire David Huff From Yankees

By Jeff Todd | January 24, 2014 at 7:03pm CDT

The Giants have acquired lefty David Huff for cash considerations, the Yankees announced. Huff was designated for assignment on Wednesday to make roster space for Masahiro Tanaka.

Huff, 29, pitched to a 4.67 ERA in 34 2/3 innings for the Yankees last season. He was claimed off of waivers early in the year from the Indians, the only organization he had played for to that point. Of Huff's 69 career MLB appearances, 54 have been starts. But while he received two spot starts for Yankees in 2013, and also made 14 Triple-A starts, Huff spent most of his time in New York working out of the pen.

Huff came to Cleveland as the 39th overall pick of the 2006 draft. Oddly, the southpaw has a significant reverse platoon split over his career: he has allowed a .797 OPS to righties, while lefties have knocked him around for an even .900 mark.

Yankees Designate David Huff For Assignment

By Steve Adams | January 22, 2014 at 12:33pm CDT

The Yankees announced that they've designated left-hander David Huff for assignment in order to clear a 40-man roster spot for Masahiro Tanaka.

The 29-year-old Huff posted a 4.67 ERA with a 26-to-8 K/BB ratio in 34 2/3 innings for the Yankees in 2013 after being selected off waivers from the Indians. The former supplemental-round pick was taken 39th overall in 2006 but has a career 5.32 ERA in 323 innings between Cleveland and New York. Huff's struggles have primarily come against fellow left-handers, as lefties have clubbed him to the tune of a .311/.381/.519 triple-slash line in his career.

David Huff Clears Waivers

By Zachary Links | June 1, 2013 at 6:10pm CDT

David Huff has cleared waivers and accepted the Yankees' assignment to Triple-A Scranton, MLBTR's Tim Dierkes has learned.  The Bombers designated Huff for assignment earlier this week to clear room on the roster for the return of Joba Chamberlain.

Huff has been moved around quite a bit in recent days as he was designated for assignment by the Indians on May 23rd and claimed by the Yankees two days later.  The 28-year-old has a 5.40 ERA with 5.1 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9 across 52 career big league starts and six relief appearances. Huff, who was drafted 39th overall in 2006 by the Indians, made just three relief appearances for the Tribe in 2013.

Yankees Designate David Huff For Assignment

By charliewilmoth | May 28, 2013 at 4:12pm CDT

The Yankees have designated David Huff for assignment, Jack Curry of the YES Network tweets. The Yankees needed to clear roster space for Joba Chamberlain, who has been activated from the disabled list.

New York claimed Huff three days ago after he had been designated for assignment by the Indians. The Indians had also designated Huff for assignment in late March, so Huff has now been designated three times in the past two months.

Huff has pitched one innings for the Yankees and three for the Indians this season. In 289 1/3 career innings, Huff has a 5.41 ERA, with 5.1 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9.

Yankees Claim David Huff, Designate Rondon

By Zachary Links | May 25, 2013 at 4:20pm CDT

The Yankees announced that they have claimed David Huff off of waivers.  To make room on the roster, the club designated Francisco Rondon for assignment.

Huff, 28, has a 5.40 ERA with 5.1 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9 across 52 career big league starts and six relief appearances.  Huff was designated for assignment by the Indians just two days ago in order to make room on the roster for fellow southpaw Scott Barnes.  The hurler, who was drafted 39th overall in 2006, made just three relief appearances during his short stint with Cleveland's varsity squad.

Rondon, 25, has yet to reach the major leagues.  He has been with the club's' Double-A affiliate in Trenton with less-than-stellar results, posting a 7.46 ERA with 6.9 K/9 and 6.4 BB/9 across 35 innings this season.

Indians Designate David Huff For Assignment

By Tim Dierkes | May 23, 2013 at 2:08pm CDT

The Indians designated lefty David Huff for assignment to open a spot for another southpaw, Scott Barnes, tweeted the team.

Huff, 28, was designated for assignment when the team could not find a spot for him as the season began, but he remained in the organization after clearing waivers.  The team had re-added him to the 40-man roster ten days ago.  After being scored upon in two of his three relief appearances, he's off the 40-man again.  Should he clear waivers, Huff can elect free agency this time, but he would give up his contract in that case.

Huff, drafted 39th overall in 2006 by the Indians, has thrown 288 1/3 innings (52 starts, six relief appearances) in parts of five seasons, with a 5.40 ERA, 5.1 K/9, 3.1 BB/9, and 1.28 HR/9.  After Huff was drafted, Baseball America wrote positively about Huff's command and control but also his fringe-average fastball velocity and lack of a weapon against left-handed hitters.

Indians Designate David Huff For Assignment

By edcreech | March 31, 2013 at 2:39pm CDT

The Indians have announced they have designated left-hander David Huff for assignment. Huff was informed on Monday he would not make the team and the Indians were trying to work out a trade because he is out of options. The Indians now have ten days to complete such a deal or they can either release or outright him to the minors.

The 28-year-old was selected in the supplemental round (39th overall) by the Indians in the 2006 draft. He has appeared in 55 games (52 starts) for the Tribe over parts of four seasons, accumulating 285 1/3 innings but posting unsightly ratios including a 5.30 ERA, 5.0 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9. He has averaged 90.5 mph on his fastball with a 36.5 percent ground-ball rate throughout his career. Huff posted a 5.82 ERA this spring in 17 innings (nine games including one start) with 7.9/9K, 2.6 BB/9, and 2.1 HR/9.

The Indians' 40-man roster remains at 39 players because the team selected the contract of Ryan Raburn from Triple-A Columbus.
