Ed Wade Re-Joins Phillies

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | December 20, 2011 at 9:13am CDT

TUESDAY: The Phillies have announced that Wade will be a special consultant in the club's baseball operations department.

MONDAY: Longtime MLB GM Ed Wade has returned to the Phillies in a scouting position, Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com reports (on Twitter). Richard Justice of the Houston Chronicle first reported that Wade would end up scouting for his former team (Twitter link).

The Astros dismissed Wade this fall after four years in Houston and a 56-106 showing in 2011. Wade became Philadelphia's GM in 1997 after spending years in the team's baseball operations department. Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. was Wade's assistant GM from 1999 until Wade's dismissal in 2005. The Phillies drafted Ryan Howard and Chase Utley while Wade was GM and selected Jimmy Rollins when he was the team's player personnel administrator.

Astros Links: Rodriguez, Wade, Mills

By Tim Dierkes | November 28, 2011 at 6:07pm CDT

Ed Wade's tenure as Astros GM lasted four years and a few months, as his dismissal was announced last night.  David Gottfried will serve as interim GM.  New Astros president and CEO George Postolos described the team's criteria for their next GM in a statement last night:

"We are searching for a candidate who has the knowledge, skills and experience to build a winner and a strong commitment to player development in order to sustain success. Our goal is to consistently compete for a championship, and we know the first step towards that goal is to develop one of the top farm systems in baseball. We will hire the best candidate available to achieve our goal."

That's a pretty standard-issue statement.  Here are today's Astros links…

  • The Astros don’t expect to hire a new GM before the Winter Meetings begin next Monday, according to MLB.com’s Brian McTaggart.
  • There’s a “decent-sized” market for Wandy Rodriguez if the next Astros GM wants to move him, according to ESPN.com’s Buster Olney (on Twitter).
  • Wade was informed by owner Jim Crane and Postolos Wednesday morning that he wouldn't return, he told MLB.com's Brian McTaggart.  The Astros will be paying him through 2013.  Wade expressed disappointment he won't be able to see the rebuilding project through to the end.  He added, "We were able to acquire Randy Wolf, LaTroy Hawkins and Jose Valverde and several other players, who, in different economic circumstances, we could have retained and could have been more successful at the big league level.  The last couple of years in the economic environment we were in, we were in position of being mandated to trade iconic players — Berkman and Oswalt in 2010 and then young All-Stars in Bourn and Pence and [Jeff] Keppinger, who was a solid piece to our club."
  • Wade indicated he wants to find a new job in baseball quickly, saying, "I haven't had a lot of down time and I'm not looking for down time."
  • Wade "inched the franchise back toward respectability," in the opinion of Richard Justice of the Houston Chronicle.
  • One "really smart executive" estimated that the Astros will take four to seven years to become respectable again, writes ESPN's Buster Olney.
  • The Astros will choose their new GM before clarifying the status of manager Brad Mills, hears SI's Jon Heyman (Twitter link).  Mills is not a candidate to return to Boston as their next manager, tweets Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald.

Astros Extend Ed Wade Through 2012

By Mike Axisa | February 20, 2010 at 10:43am CDT

The Astros have extended the contract of GM Ed Wade through 2012, reports MLB.com’s Brian McTaggart. The official announcement is expected later today.

Wade is entering his third full season as Houston’s general manager. His most notable pickups include Michael Bourn, Jose Valverde, Miguel Tejada, LaTroy Hawkins, Ivan Rodriguez, Matt Lindstrom, and Brandon Lyon. You can find his full trade history here, courtesy of Brendan Bianowicz.

Under Wade, the Astros are exactly .500 with a 166-166 record. Before becoming Houston’s general manager, he held the same position with the Phillies for eight years.

Heyman On Peavy, Astros, Greene

By Tim Dierkes | May 29, 2009 at 1:21pm CDT

A new column from SI's Jon Heyman…

  • If you are sick of hearing about Jake Peavy now, just wait until later this summer.  The pitcher's no-trade clause has "wreaked havoc" on the Padres, but they'll keep trying to trade him.  There are competing opinions as to which teams Peavy would accept a trade, but the Cubs and Dodgers seem to be named most often.  Neither club is a perfect match.  Over at the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel Michael Hunt discusses the Brewers possibility; he worries that Peavy's contract could become a burden for the Brew Crew.
  • Heyman discusses the situation with Astros manager Cecil Cooper.  Could he be fired so soon after having his option picked up?  Heyman believes Ed Wade might be a bigger problem, and even suggests that "privately [Shawn Chacon's] inappropriate actions were cheered by some other players."  Astros owner Drayton McLane told Jose de Jesus Ortiz of the Houston Chronicle that a dismissal of Cooper is "not in the cards," yet Wade doesn't believe in giving votes of confidence.
  • Heyman talked to one person close to shortstop Khalil Greene who "could see the 29-year-old walking away from the game after this season."  Update: Greene's on the DL.
  • A competing exec told Heyman he wouldn't be stunned to see the Giants dangle Matt Cain, even though they haven't yet.  Heyman suggests gauging the value of Jonathan Sanchez first makes sense.

Odds & Ends: Beckham, Taschner, Red Sox

By Tim Dierkes | March 25, 2009 at 11:28am CDT

Links for Wednesday…

  • Chat today, 2pm CST.
  • The White Sox sent last year's first-round pick Gordon Beckham to Double A to play shortstop, according to Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune.
  • Brian McTaggart of the Houston Chronicle talked to Astros GM Ed Wade about the difference between guaranteed and non-guaranteed contracts.
  • El Lefty Malo expects the Giants to trade lefty Jack Taschner and go after free agent Will Ohman.  Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News dismissed an internet rumor about Taschner and the Tigers.  Not sure where that came from.
  • Alex Speier of WEEI projects Boston's Opening Day payroll to be under $120MM, its lowest since '03.  Speier suggests this could allow midseason financial flexibility.
  • Chico Harlan of the Washington Post asks whether the Nationals will try to avoid an eventual Super Two status for Jordan Zimmermann.
  • Bart Given says Shawn Hill made the right decision in signing with San Diego.
  • Oil Can Boyd hopes to pitch in Ottawa in the Cam-Am Baseball League.

  • Something's not right with Corey Koskie, and the Chicago Tribune's Paul Sullivan says he'll decide about his future by Saturday.
  • Former Blue Jays assistant GM Bart Given has a blog, and it's pretty good from what I've read (hat tip: Drunk Jays Fans).
  • Sidearmer Mark Worrell, acquired by the Padres for Khalil Greene, needs Tommy John surgery according to Bill Center of the San Diego Union Tribune.
  • Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune says the White Sox "traded infielder Sergio Santos to San Francisco for future considerations."  Santos was picked 27th overall by the D'Backs in the 2002 draft.
  • Chico Harlan of the Washington Post wonders whether $5MM first baseman Dmitri Young will be willing to accept an assignment to Triple A.
  • MLB.com's Alyson Footer says Astros GM Ed Wade never lied to her and doesn't owe her an apology about Ivan Rodriguez.  Wade just changed his mind after talking to Footer.
  • Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune doesn't see the Cubs releasing $4MM reliever Luis Vizcaino.
  • Tracy Ringolsby of Inside The Rockies believes Jeff Baker is the team's most likely infielder to be dealt.  ESPN's Jayson Stark mentioned Baker yesterday as a trade candidate, and the Denver Post's Troy E. Renck has wondered if he'd fit for the Yankees or Astros.
  • MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan says the Rangers have discussed Frank Catalanotto with other clubs but found no takers.  Catalanotto has $6MM coming to him.
  • Rany Jazayerli discusses the Royals' signing of Sidney Ponson and release of Jimmy Gobble.

By Brian Shephard | March 14, 2009 at 9:05pm CDT

  • Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated writes about the political stance that has Magglio Ordonez getting booed at the WBC.
