Shouse Seeks Two Years

By Tim Dierkes | November 26, 2008 at 10:43am CDT

According to Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, free agent reliever Brian Shouse is looking for a two-year deal.  MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy first reported this on October 30th.  The Brewers want to do one year, and their recent signing of lefty R.J. Swindle may mean Shouse is less likely to re-sign.  The Rockies have discussed Shouse internally, according to Troy Renck.  The Tigers are another possibility.

Haudricourt also notes that Doug Melvin talked to Gabe Kapler but did not make an offer. Melvin may be more focused on lefthanded hitters.  It’s been suggested that the Red Sox could bring Kapler back.

Crisp-Ramirez Trade Reactions

By Tim Dierkes | November 19, 2008 at 3:50pm CDT

The Red Sox traded center fielder Coco Crisp to the Royals for reliever Ramon Ramirez today; tip of the cap to Brian McRae for the scoop.  Let’s round up the reactions and consequences.

  • MLB.com’s Dick Kaegel says Royals GM Dayton Moore will now attempt to rebuild his bullpen, perhaps by trading an outfielder or first baseman.  Kaegel says "word from Chicago downplays the Cubs’ reputed interest" in Mark Teahen.
  • MLB.com’s Ian Browne says Red Sox GM Theo Epstein will bring in a fourth outfielder to replace Crisp.  Browne suggests free agents Gabe Kapler or Rocco Baldelli.
  • Ken Davidoff says the Sox now have the flexibility to move Justin Masterson into the rotation, reducing the leverage of the agents for Derek Lowe and A.J. Burnett.
  • Craig Brown of Royals Authority expects the Royals to trade Teahen now.
  • Dave Cameron gives the slight edge to the Royals in the trade.
  • According to ESPN’s Peter Gammons, the Reds were also part of the "surprisingly small market for Crisp."
  • Matt Porter of the Boston Globe profiles Ramirez.
  • ESPN’s Keith Law says both teams may be disappointed, and 2008 may have been Ramirez’s career year.

Cafardo’s Latest: Hot Stove, Twins, Gordon, Pedro

By Steve Adams | October 26, 2008 at 4:50pm CDT

Nick Cafardo from the Boston Globe has a nice article up catching up on some Hot Stove news, with a few other odds and ends tied in. Let’s hit the highlights here:

  • Cafardo seems to think the Yankees could entice C.C. Sabathia to pitch on the East Coast, and that the Angels would be crazy not to re-sign Mark Teixeira at whatever the cost. He also points out Joe Maddon’s connection to Francisco Rodriguez from his days as a coach with the Angels, and covers other top names such as Jake Peavy, A.J. Burnett, Derek Lowe, Manny Ramirez, Pat Burrell, Matt Holliday, and Garrett Atkins.
  • The Minnesota Twins were ranked as the #1 team in young talent by the 2009 Bill James Handbook. Minnesota had ten players in the top 150: Joe Mauer, Delmon Young, Justin Morneau, Kevin Slowey, Scott Baker, Carlos Gomez, Nick Blackburn, Jason Kubel, Denard Span, and Glen Perkins.
  • The article includes a Q&A with Tom Gordon, who has high praise for the Phillies, particularly Brad Lidge. Gordon says that having avoided Tommy John Surgery, he feels he can continue his career, and would love to pitch in Philadelphia next year. Gordon will understand if his option is declined, but is emphatic in saying he’s "going to pitch somewhere." Plenty of teams need bullpen help, and even with his injury, I can’t imagine him having a hard time finding work.
  • Cafardo likes the idea of either Rocco Baldelli or Gabe Kapler as a fourth outfielder for the Red Sox.
  • Would Pedro Martinez consider an incentive-laden contract to be Boston’s fifth starter next season?
  • Red Sox catching prospect Mark Wagner has shown improvement the Arizona Fall League. This only adds to the Jason Varitek dilemma that Boston is faced with.

Odds and Ends: Santana, Cabrera, Kapler

By Tim Dierkes | December 20, 2007 at 3:10pm CDT

A few good reads that I didn’t know how to fit elsewhere.

  • LENIII does a Johan Q&A.  I can’t say much has changed but he does dissect the situation well.
  • Mike DiGiovanna also does a mailbag, with tidbits about Howie Kendrick, Miguel Cabrera, Paul Konerko, and many others.
  • I know I said I like to skip minor signings, but it’s interesting to see Gabe Kapler out of retirement, signing with the Brewers.
