Rays Claim Jake Reed Off Waivers From Dodgers, Place Collin McHugh On 10-Day Injured List

By TC Zencka | July 25, 2021 at 1:37pm CDT

The Rays have claimed right-hander Jake Reed off waivers from the Dodgers, per the team. Reed’s time with the Dodgers was short, but memorable. He began the year in the Angels’ minor league system, but he was released on June 2. He signed with the Dodgers two days later and made his Major League debut with the Dodgers little more than a month later.

The Tucson native appeared in six games from July 6-18, starting one as an opener. He tossed 5 1/3 innings, giving up two earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out five. He will head to Triple-A to join the Durham Bulls.

Earlier today, the Rays placed Collin McHugh on the 10-day injured list with arm fatigue, replacing him on the active roster with Ryan Sherriff, who joined the taxi squad yesterday, per the team.

In his first action since leaving the Astros after 2019, McHugh has been a tremendous swingman for the Rays. He’s logged 41 2/3 innings in 23 appearances (including four starts) with a 1.51 ERA/1.36 FIP, good for a chunky 1.5 fWAR. The 34-year-old allows his share of fly balls with just a 40.0 percent groundball rate, but his strikeout and walk numbers are sterling. McHugh has a 36.6 percent strikeout rate and a 5.0 percent walk rate.

Dodgers Acquire Billy McKinney From Mets

By Anthony Franco | July 21, 2021 at 2:34pm CDT

The Dodgers announced they’ve acquired outfielder Billy McKinney from the Mets for outfield prospect Carlos Rincon. New York had designated McKinney for assignment earlier in the week. To create space on the roster, Los Angeles designated reliever Jake Reed for assignment.

McKinney has already suited up for the Brewers and Mets this season. Between the two clubs, he’s compiled a .213/.282/.415 line with eight home runs across 202 plate appearances. That’s more or less a match for the left-handed hitter’s career .225/.288/.430 line in parts of four seasons.

The 26-year-old strikes out a bit more than average and doesn’t draw many walks — thus the low on-base percentage — but he has a fair amount of power. Over 613 MLB plate appearances (roughly one full season), McKinney has popped 26 home runs. He owns a .205 ISO (slugging minus batting average) that checks in a fair bit north of the .163 league average.

McKinney is out of minor league options. The Dodgers will have to keep him on the active roster or again make him available to other clubs. He’ll add a lefty bat to the corner outfield/bench mix and could pick up some playing time against right-handers when L.A. rests A.J. Pollock. Pollock’s having a second straight very strong season, but he’s had his share of injury issues in the past.

The Dodgers selected Reed two weeks ago, positioning the righty to log his first big league action. Reed has since tossed 5 1/3 innings of three-run ball, striking out five while issuing a pair of walks. The former Twins’ prospect has a 5.57 ERA across 21 innings in Triple-A this year, split between the Angels’ and Dodgers’ top affiliates. To Reed’s credit, he’s been much better since joining the Dodgers organization and his minor league strikeout and walk rates (29.5% and 7.4%, respectively) have been impressive.

Los Angeles will have a week to trade Reed or expose him to waivers. Between his recent success and three remaining minor league option years, it’s possible another club adds him via a minor transaction.

In exchange for McKinney, the Mets add Rincon to the farm system. The 23-year-old corner outfielder has spent the year with Double-A Tulsa, hitting .263/.343/.470 with 12 home runs across 265 plate appearances despite playing in a pitcher-friendly league. Rincon has big raw power but scouts have expressed trepidation about his approach at the plate and lack of defensive value as a corner player.

Dodgers Designate Steven Souza Jr. For Assignment

By Steve Adams | July 6, 2021 at 1:57pm CDT

The Dodgers announced Tuesday that they’ve designated veteran outfielder Steven Souza Jr. for assignment in order to open a spot on the roster for right-handed reliever Jake Reed, whose contract has been selected from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Souza, 32, joined the Dodgers on a minor league deal back in mid-April after he was unable to win a roster spot with the Astros in Spring Training. The Dodgers called the former Rays slugger to the big leagues last month after he posted a mammoth .279/.444/.603 batting line with six homers, four doubles and 16 walks in 90 Triple-A plate appearances. Souza has functioned as a seldom-used bench piece and pinch-hitter, however, tallying just 28 plate appearances in 13 games and posting a .160/.250/.360 batting line in that time.

The past few years have been a roller coaster for Souza, who missed much of the 2018 season with pectoral injuries before suffering a catastrophic knee injury during Spring Training with the D-backs in 2019. Souza suffered tears of the ACL, LCL, PCL and posterolateral capsule in his left knee during a play at the plate and missed the entire season recovering from the subsequent surgery. That he’s been able to return to the Majors at all after such a devastating injury is a testament to his determination, but he’s yet to get a legitimate look with either the Cubs (for whom he played last summer) or the Dodgers, who now have a week to trade Souza, place him on outright waivers, or release him.

For the 28-year-old Reed, this will mark his first call to the Majors after eight years in pro ball. The former Oregon Duck was a fifth-round pick by the Twins back in 2014 and long rated as one of the organization’s more promising bullpen prospects. He posted video-game numbers in the lower minors before beginning to stumble at the Double-A level, although after spending a few seasons both there and in Triple-A, Reed’s numbers began to come around. He never parlayed that into a big league appearance with the Twins, however, and he’s now split the 2021 season between both L.A. clubs after first signing with the Angels as a minor league free agent.

Since being released from that deal and signing with the Dodgers, Reed has pitched 10 1/3 innings in OKC, holding opponents to three runs on 12 hits and just one walk with 11 punchouts. In parts of five Triple-A seasons, he’s pitched to a 3.89 ERA with a solid 26.1 percent strikeout rate, a slightly elevated 9.8 percent walk rate and a 41.4 percent ground-ball rate in 185 innings of relief.

Minor MLB Transactions: 11/12/20

By Connor Byrne | November 12, 2020 at 9:06pm CDT

The latest minor moves from around baseball…

  • The Red Sox have inked right-handed reliever Kevin McCarthy to a minor league contract, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. McCarthy will earn an $825K salary if he makes the majors in 2021. The 28-year-old appeared in the bigs with the Royals in each season from 2016-20, and despite a meager 5.63 K/9, he recorded a 3.80 ERA/4.11 FIP in 191 2/3 innings. McCarthy has three seasons of between 45 and 70 innings under his belt, but after a 2020 in which he threw a mere six frames, the Royals outrighted him.
  • The Angels have signed infielder Kean Wong and righty Jake Reed to minors contracts with invitations to MLB camp, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic tweets. A fourth-round pick of Tampa Bay in 2013, Wong’s only major league experience came when he went 3-for-18 with the Rays and Angels in 2019. Wong does, however, own a respectable .286/.350/.413 line in 1,425 Triple-A plate appearances. The 25-year-old is the younger brother of free-agent second baseman Kolten Wong, whom the Angels have shown interest in this offseason. Reed entered the pro ranks as a Twins fifth-rounder in 2014, but he hasn’t gotten to the majors yet. The 28-year-old appeared at the Triple-A level from 2016-19, during which he logged a 3.68 ERA with 9.6 K/9 against 3.8 BB/9 over 164 innings.
