Jayson Werth

Odds & Ends: Crosby, Vizcaino, Andruw

By Tim Dierkes | March 10, 2009 at 11:12am CDT

Links for Tuesday…

  • Chat today, 2pm CST.
  • RotoAuthority sums up the stats you should target in each category for your fantasy league.
  • The Braves released pitcher Anthony Lerew, according to Carroll Rogers of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
  • Rany Jazayerli says the Royals will be better just by subtracting Ross Gload, Tony Pena Jr., and Joey Gathright.  Here’s my Offseason In Review for the club, if you’re interested.
  • A’s manager Bob Geren "chuckled and said no" when asked if Bobby Crosby is being showcased at third base for the Yankees, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.  Crosby is learning third in part because Eric Chavez is injured again.
  • Speaking of Crosby, Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune wonders if the Cubs could work out a deal involving reliever Luis Vizcaino.  Despite the $4MM owed to Vizcaino, he’s not a lock for the Cubs’ bullpen.  We learned last week that the Cubs do not appear interested in Crosby.
  • Slusser also has an article about young A’s pitcher Michael Ynoa, who believes he can be in the Majors in two years at age 19.
  • Andruw Jones apologized to Dodgers fans in this Bill Plaschke article.
  • Talking to Paul Hagen of the Philadelphia Daily News, Phillies manager Charlie Manuel sees Jayson Werth missing no more than 15-20 games this year.  Geoff Jenkins, with $8MM left on his contract, looks like the odd man out.

Phillies Sign Jayson Werth To Multiyear Deal

By Tim Dierkes | January 21, 2009 at 11:40am CDT

11:40am: SI.com’s Jon Heyman has the details – Werth gets a two-year, $10MM deal.  He’ll get $3MM in ’09 and $7MM in ’10, which would’ve been his first free agent year.

10:09am: According to CSN Philly, the Phillies avoided arbitration with outfielder Jayson Werth by signing him to a multiyear deal.  Werth was set to reach free agency after the season.  Scout.com’s Chuck Hixson has a source saying it’s a two-year deal worth around $9MM, while Scott Lauber heard $8MM.

Phillies Arb: Howard, Victorino, Werth

By Alex Walsh | January 17, 2009 at 1:44pm CDT

In addition to backing up the facts behind today’s Cole Hamels story, Todd Zolecki has an update on the Phillies’ remaining arbitration-eligible players.

After Greg Dobbs’ 2-year, $2.5MM deal, six players are left on the arb list: Ryan Howard, Ryan Madson, Shane Victorino, Joe Blanton, Jayson Werth and Chad Durbin.

According to Zolecki, "The Phillies have been talking with Madson about a contract extension, but he reportedly turned down a three-year, $12 million offer."

Zolecki also doesn’t expect Howard’s deal to be done anytime soon.

Perrotto’s Latest: Dye, Jenks, Werth, Madson

By Tim Dierkes | December 4, 2008 at 8:25am CDT

THURSDAY: David Lennon of Newsday talked to a source who said there’s "nothing there" in regard to the rumor of a Dye and Jenks to the Mets blockbuster. Joel Sherman talked to a few Mets officials who called the rumor nonsense.  Sherman says Martinez is "all but untouchable."

WEDNESDAY: Let’s dig into the latest column from John Perrotto of Baseball Prospectus.

  • Perrotto speaks of whispers of a possible White Sox-Mets blockbuster.  The Mets would receive Jermaine Dye and Bobby Jenks and the White Sox would receive Fernando Martinez among others.
  • Regarding the Orioles’ possible involvement in a trade that would send Jake Peavy to the Cubs, Perrotto says Baltimore seeks Ronny Cedeno and Felix Pie from Chicago.
  • Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. has spoken to outfielder Jayson Werth and setup man Ryan Madson about contract extensions.  Madson might be a tough one as he’s represented by Scott Boras (who recently compared him to Mariano Rivera).  Both players are under team control for one more season.
  • The Red Sox are considering free agents Willie Bloomquist, Jay Payton, and Mark Loretta as possible bench additions.  A return to Boston seems to be Payton’s preference.
  • Perrotto believes the only player seriously considering accepting arbitration is Darren Oliver.  Oliver’s already seen the Reds drop out of the mix due to the draft pick price.
  • Perrotto says the Tigers and Orioles are showing interest in Jack Wilson, while the Dodgers have backed off.

Phils, Cards Battle For Holliday

By Tim Dierkes | November 7, 2008 at 9:20am CDT

According to Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post, the Phillies and Cardinals are the top suitors for Rockies outfielder Matt Holliday.

The Phillies discussed Holliday and Brian Fuentes with the Rockies during the season.  The Rockies have an eye on Carlos Carrasco, J.A. Happ, and Shane Victorino.  Todd Zolecki believes Jayson Werth could be in the mix.

The Cardinals have been aggressive, and Ryan Ludwick is their bargaining chip.  Joe Strauss says the Cardinals would like to try to sign Holliday to an extension, but may not have the leverage to require a window.  The Cards would like to get something done soon.  Ludwick alone seems a pretty solid return for Holliday, since the Rockies would have him for three years.  Strauss adds that the Mets are also in the running for Holliday.

Rays Scouting Jayson Werth

By Tim Dierkes | July 30, 2008 at 10:49am CDT

Mike Tingle of ESPN 840 in Charlottesville spoke to Rays scout Mike Cubbage yesterday.  Cubbage said that he plans to scout Phillies outfielder Jayson Werth, and that Werth may be available in the right deal.  Werth, 29, is hitting .272/.358/.485 in 268 plate appearances (most of the damage done against lefties).

Additionally, the Rays offered a package of players for Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte but the Bucs chose the Yankees’ offer.  The Rays also looked at Jon Rauch previously, though he was not at the top of their list.  And of course, the Rays would like to acquire Brian Fuentes.

Phillies Sign Jayson Werth

By Tim Dierkes | December 19, 2006 at 9:02am CDT

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Phillies have signed Jayson Werth to a contract, pending a physical.  The outfielder turns 28 in May; he was nontendered by the Dodgers.

Werth played in the Baltimore and Toronto systems before a trade to L.A.  He plays all three outfield positions.  He was actually a catcher with Baltimore and considered a backup at times in L.A.  Perhaps the Phillies would pursue the idea once again.

He’s had plenty of injury problems: a strain in ’03, an oblique strain, two cracked ribs, and a torn elbow ligament in ’04, a broken wrist from an A.J. Burnett heater in ’05, a sore knee that same year, wrist surgery that winter, and a second wrist surgery last August.  Whew.

Werth got Major League offers from the Cards and Padres as well this winter.  He’ll join Pat Burrell, Aaron Rowand, Jeff Conine, and Shane Victorino in the Phillie outfield if healthy.  The signing might add some flexibility for a trade.

Aubrey Huff To Houston?

By Tim Dierkes | January 13, 2006 at 10:56am CDT

Got a good one today.  I admit I was skeptical at first, but an independent source verified the rumor.

It seems that Arizona, Houston, Los Angeles, and Tampa Bay have some sort of deal in the works.  It is known that Jayson Werth and Aubrey Huff are involved, but the other players have not yet been revealed.  Apparently Werth is headed to Tampa Bay or Arizona – my sources differ in opinion here.

Both sources indicated that Aubrey Huff will be joining the Astros.  Such a move would certainly cloud up the Astros’ 1B/OF situation.  They’d have Lance Berkman, Jeff Bagwell, Jason Lane, Willy Taveras, Preston Wilson, and Huff.  We know that Bagwell may not be able to play, and Lane and Taveras are trade candidates.  Huff mainly played right field and first base for the Devil Rays this year.

UPDATE: It now looks to be a three team deal with the Diamondbacks, Devil Rays, and Astros involved (Werth is out of the picture). Huff to the Astros is still the main piece, and the deal supposedly is contingent on Bagwell retiring and freeing up the insurance money.  That’s all for now.
