Jorge Sosa

Odds And Ends: Sosa, Rhodes, Twins, Rays, Cubs

By Cork Gaines | July 26, 2008 at 3:58pm CDT

A few minor notes from around the MLBiverse…

  • The Mariners have signed Jorge Sosa to a minor league deal. This is Sosa’s third organization this season.
  • Despite reports that the Brewers would not add a relief pitcher, Milwaukee had a scout at Friday’s game and Geoff Baker believes the scout was there to watch Arthur Rhodes.
  • Joe Christensen says that the Twins may prefer to promote Francisco Liriano, and move him or another starter to the bullpen, rather than trade for a relief pitcher.
  • Joe Maddon says that there is only a "50-50 chance" that the Rays make a move before the deadline.
  • Jim Hendry says that the Cubs are not likely to make any trades unless an injury necessitates a move. Carrie Muskat says that a move may depend on how well Kerry Wood recovers from the blister on his throwing hand.

Astros DFA Borkowski, Sign Jorge Sosa

By Tim Dierkes | May 28, 2008 at 7:41pm CDT

To make room for Wandy Rodriguez’s return from the DL tonight, the Astros designated reliever Dave Borkowski for assignment.  They also signed righty Jorge Sosa to a minor league deal.

Borkowski, 31, makes $800K this year.  His 2.67 K/BB (21 innings) this year wasn’t bad, but he allowed too many hits and home runs.

Sosa, 30, was designated for assignment and then released by the Mets earlier this year.  $2MM down the tubes for the Mets.

Jorge Sosa Officially Released

By Paul Moro | May 24, 2008 at 1:44pm CDT

Designated for assignment by the New York Mets back on May 13th, Jorge Sosa was officially released yesterday (bottom of the page) after the team was unable to find any takers on the trade market. Once he was DFA’d, it was a given that he and his $2MM salary would at least clear waivers. Sosa ended up declining an assignment to AAA New Orleans and is now a free agent.

Since joining the Mets prior to the 2007 season, Sosa was primarily used as the longman out of the bullpen, during which time he compiled a 4.89 ERA. But a rough start to 2008 (7.06 ERA) was compounded by a logjam of relievers in the New York bullpen, and the team was unable to justify keeping him on the roster.

Sosa, Figueroa Designated

By Tim Dierkes | May 13, 2008 at 3:36pm CDT

The Mets designated pitchers Nelson Figueroa and Jorge Sosa for assignment today.

Figueroa, a 34 year-old journeyman, provided a few decent starts but seems to have stopped fooling people.  Sosa was just terrible; the Mets will have to swallow his $2MM salary.

Mets Dangle Relievers For OF Help

By Michael Glab | March 8, 2008 at 10:58am CDT

Scott Schoeneweis is miffed that the Mets may be considering using him as bait to snag an outfield replacement for Moises Alou.

The Mets have hinted they’d like to remove Schoeneweis and Jorge Sosa from their payroll, but the Alou injury situation makes the departure of the two relievers even more likely.  Schoeneweis will make $7.2MM in 2008 and ’09 to complete his current three-year deal. Sosa makes an even $2MM in a one-year pact. Schoeneweis disappointed Omar Minaya last year with a 5.03 ERA in 70 games.

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Mets called the Pirates to chat about Xavier Nady. New York may not have the pitching prospects the Pirates would want in return. Pittsburgh also may figure Nady’s value will increase toward the trade deadline.

Odds and Ends: Thames, Sosa, Inge, Crisp

By Tim Dierkes | March 5, 2008 at 11:40am CDT

Here’s today’s link roundup.

  • MetsBlog passes along a Jon Heyman WFAN appearance tidbit.  The SI.com writer said the Mets and Tigers are discussing a Marcus Thames for Jorge Sosa swap.  Thames definitely fits the Mets’ needs, though Sosa seems a little light for him.
  • I did a fantasy baseball mailbag for Hardball Times.
  • Brandon Inge tries to explain his comments about catching.
  • John Smoltz has advice for Cole Hamels.
  • Nice to see a popular player legitimately spending time to sign fan mail.
  • Buster Olney says the Red Sox and A’s are still discussing Coco Crisp.
  • Olney also notes that "talent evaluators say the Reds have demonstrated a clear willingness to deal Homer Bailey."

Schoeneweis, Jorge Sosa Available

By Tim Dierkes | March 3, 2008 at 8:06am CDT

In many years, no significant March trades are made.  In March ’05, the most noteworthy deal may have been the Rays sending Jorge Sosa to Atlanta for infielder Nick Green.  It was a fluke, but Sosa did win 13 games for the ’05 Braves with a miraculous 2.55 ERA.  Sosa, now with the Mets, is available again according to Adam Rubin.  He’ll make $2MM in ’08, and is a mildly useful swingman.

Rubin says southpaw reliever Scott Schoeneweis is also being shopped.  His was an odd contract when it was signed a year ago; he’ll make $3.6MM in each of the ’08 and ’09 seasons.  Maybe Scott Boras deserves credit for that one.  If the Mets are to unload the 34 year-old they’ll probably have to eat some salary or accept a bad contract in return.

Jorge Sosa For Todd Williams?

By Tim Dierkes | April 15, 2007 at 10:13am CDT

Kevin Davidoff of Newsday has rumor of a small trade that has been discussed.  In March, the Mets and Orioles discussed swapping Jorge Sosa for Todd Williams.  However, there’s been nothing going on recently.

The Mets picked up Sosa this winter for $1.25MM to add some pitching depth.  I imagine more teams will start calling about the 29 year-old Sosa, noticing he’s thrown 13 scoreless innings in Triple A.

Williams is earning $775K from the O’s. The 36 year-old has only made two appearances, and has two scoreless innings under his belt.

Marlins Interested In Benitez, Reitsma

By Tim Dierkes | December 16, 2006 at 11:11am CDT

Another year, another phoenix closer for the Fish.  This time they’re considering going back to one of their best, Armando Benitez.  The Marlins and Giants are still moving along on that one, though the players and money involved aren’t clear yet.  Benitez seems to like the idea.

The Marlins may go after new free agents Chris Reitsma and Jorge Sosa as well.  Might as well round ’em up and try to piece together a bullpen.  The team is still hunting for the right center fielder, but the rotation is set with Willis-Johnson-Olsen-Sanchez-Nolasco.

Viva El Birdos: Cardinals Acquire Jorge Sosa

By Tim Dierkes | July 31, 2006 at 3:54pm CDT

You might have a hard time getting over there, as SB Nation’s servers have been overwhelmed.  But the Cardinals blog Viva El Birdos reports that the Cards have acquired pitcher Jorge Sosa for Triple A reliever Rich Scalamandre.

Sosa’s progression this year was as follows.  First, he signed a $2.2MM deal with the Braves in January after posting a very flukey 2.55 ERA in 134 innings.  Then Sosa pitched for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic as a reliever in March.  The Braves decided to begin the season with Sosa as their #4 starter and John Thomson in the pen.  By late June, Sosa was moved to the bullpen due to his poor pitching.  After mercifully removing him from the rotation, Bobby Cox decided to make Sosa the closer.  By the middle of the month Sosa lost his job to Ken Ray; he was demoted yesterday.

Scalamandre, 25, was promoted to Triple A on June 21st and has been OK in 19 innings.
