Koyie Hill

Nationals Sign Koyie Hill

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | June 19, 2012 at 2:01pm CDT

The Nationals announced that they signed catcher Koyie Hill and assigned him to Triple-A Syracuse (Twitter link). Hill elected free agency this past weekend after the Cubs designated him for assignment and outrighted him to Triple-A.

Hill appeared in 11 games for the Cubs this year, collecting six singles and a double in 39 plate appearances. The 33-year-old has experience in nine MLB seasons, but most of his professional career has been spent at the minor league level, where he has a .278 /.344/.410 batting line. Sandy Leon, Carlos Maldonado and Wilson Ramos are all on the disabled list, so the Nationals don't have much catching depth right now.

Cubs Acquire Koyie Hill From Reds

By Zachary Links | May 19, 2012 at 1:37pm CDT

The Cubs have brought back catcher Koyie Hill after acquiring him from the Reds in exchange for cash considerations, tweets Carrie Muskat of MLB.com.  Hill will be with the club for tonight's game against the White Sox.

Hill, 33, was hitting just .195/.250/.341 for the Reds' Double-A affiliate so far this year.  The veteran spent the previous five years with the Cubs and hit .208/.270/.295 in 252 big league games.  With the retirement of Kerry Wood, Chicago’s 40-man roster still stands at 40 players.

The Reds signed Hill to a minor league deal in late April after he was let go by the Cardinals.

  • The Royals announced via Twitter that they have traded outfielder Greg Golson to the White Sox for cash considerations.  The 26-year-old appeared in nine games for the Yankees last year and hit .263/.330/.385 in 105 games with the team’s Triple-A affiliate.
  • The Cardinals announced that they released infielder Alex Cora and catcher Koyie Hill.  The Cards signed Cora to a minor league deal back in February that would have been worth $800K if he made the big league roster.  Hill, who spent 2011 with the Cubs, hooked on with the Cardinals in January.

Giants Interested In Ramon Hernandez

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 6, 2011 at 12:49pm CDT

The Giants like Ramon Hernandez, according to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle (Twitter links). San Francisco has been looking for catching help since Buster Posey got injured in late May, but the front office is not talking to the Cubs about Geovany Soto or Koyie Hill, Schulman reports.

The Reds have the depth to part with Hernandez, who earns $3MM this year and is hitting .307/.368/.500 with eight home runs. Cincinnati could rely on Ryan Hanigan and prospect Devin Mesoraco if they trade Hernandez in an attempt to return to .500 and repeat as NL Central champions.

Yorvit Torrealba, Ivan Rodriguez and Ronny Paulino are three of the other catchers that have come up in San Francisco's internal discussions. I examined Hernandez as a trade candidate last week.
