Giants Designate Kyle Barraclough

The Giants have designated righty reliever Kyle Barraclough for assignment, according to Kerry Crowley of Bay Area News Group (link). Barraclough’s DFA comes as the corresponding move to the club’s Wednesday waiver claim of pitcher Tyler Anderson from the Rockies.

This likely represented a tough decision for the San Francisco front office, as Barraclough is only a few seasons removed from seeming like a potential bullpen stalwart. Between 2015 and 2018, the now-29-year-old righty logged a 3.21 ERA with an 11.5 K/9 across 218.1 innings out of the Miami pen. The Nationals acquired Barraclough from the Marlins in exchange for $1MM of international bonus availability in October of ’18, but, like most Washington relievers in the first few months of the 2019 season, Barraclough struggled mightily in late-game situations. Barraclough pitched to a 6.66 ERA (6.57 FIP) in 25.2 D.C. innings before the Nationals exposed him to waivers in August.

Following a claim by San Francisco, Barraclough looked to get back into something approaching vintage form in a small performance sample with the Giants. Though he began his time in the organization with Triple-A Sacramento, Barraclough came up to the big club in September to log a 2.25 ERA in 8.0 IP–although it’s worth noting that his historical troubles with control continued to undermine his bottom-line results (10/9 K/BB ratio).

11:29am: The Giants have announced the move, adding that lefty Andrew Suarez has also been recalled from Triple-A. San Francisco’s 40-man roster is now full.

11:21am: The Giants will select the contract of right-hander Kyle Barraclough prior to today’s game against the Cardinals, tweets Kerry Crowley of the San Jose Mercury News. The veteran right-hander is already with the club in St. Louis, he notes. San Francisco has an open spot on its 40-man roster at the moment, so a 40-man move to accommodate Barraclough’s promotion isn’t a strict necessity.

It’s been less than a month since the Giants claimed Barraclough, 29, off waivers from the Nationals. Barraclough briefly served as the Marlins closer in 2018 and was a steady setup piece in the Miami bullpen from 2015-18, but he had a season to forget following last October’s trade to Washington.

In 25 2/3 innings with the Nats this year, Barraclough turned in a disastrous 6.66 ERA — due largely to the fact that he surrendered as many homers (eight) in that short sample as he did in 55 2/3 innings a year ago. In fact, heading into the 2019 season, Barraclough had only yielded a total of 15 home runs in 218 2/3 innings. Home runs are up throughout the league, of course, but Barraclough’s increase was among the most stark in the game.

With the Giants’ Triple-A affiliate, Barraclough was blasted for seven runs in his first two-thirds of an inning. Those continued struggles may have aided the Giants in successfully passing Barraclough through outright waivers, but he’s righted the ship since that alarming system debut. He’s pitched five straight appearances without yielding an earned run, collecting nine strikeouts against three walks across five innings in that time.

Entering the 2019 season, Barraclough had pitched to a 3.21 ERA with 11.5 K/9 and 5.5 BB/9 in 218 2/3 innings at the big league level. If he’s able to continue his recent momentum and convince his new organization that he can a future piece in the ’pen, the Giants will be able to control him for another two years via arbitration. If he’s ultimately removed from the 40-man roster a second time, he’ll have the requisite service time to elect free agency at season’s end.

Giants Outright Kyle Barraclough

The Giants have outrighted right-hander Kyle Barraclough to Triple-A after he cleared waivers, as Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area was among those to cover on Twitter. Barraclough had been designated for assignment shortly after being claimed off waivers.

Barraclough has made just one appearance at the Giants’ top affiliate. It was not a good one, as he coughed up five earned runs without recording an out. That follows a rough showing with the Nationals. Barraclough worked to a 6.66 ERA with thirty strikeouts and a dozen walks, but also eight home runs allowed, in 25 2/3 innings.

It is not entirely clear what intentions the Giants have for Barraclough, who was mostly effective (3.21 ERA with 11.5 K/9 and 5.5 BB/9) in 218 2/3 innings over four seasons with the Marlins before he landed in D.C. The club has absorbed the remainder of his $1.725MM salary, so you’d think they have a bit more in mind than late-season depth. It’s possible the San Francisco org will implement some tweaks and consider tendering him a contract for 2020, though he’ll surely need to show a spark before the end of the season for that to occur.

Giants Select Fernando Abad’s Contract, Designate Kyle Barraclough

The Giants announced a series of roster moves, including the news that catcher Aramis Garcia and left-hander Williams Jerez were optioned to Triple-A Sacramento and right-hander Kyle Barraclough has been designated for assignment.  Right-hander Dereck Rodriguez was called up and left-hander Fernando Abad’s contract was purchased from Triple-A.

After signing a minors contract with the Giants in February, Abad is lined up to receive his first MLB action since 2017.  His 2018 season was marred by a lengthy appeal of a positive PED test that eventually led to an 80-game suspension.  Abad had agreed to a minor league deal with the Mets prior to the season but the suspension caused New York to pull out of the agreement before it became official.  Pitching for Sacramento this season, Abad has been very impressive, posting a 3.07 ERA and 49 strikeouts against only four walks over 44 relief innings.

Rodriguez will get another chance at salvaging what has been a rough sophomore season for the 27-year-old, who has a 5.32 ERA, 5.9 K/9, and 1.68 K/BB rate over 64 1/3 frames this season.  It’s a far cry from Rodriguez’s 2.81 ERA in his 2018 rookie season, as the righty has been up and down from the minors on multiple occasions this season as he has tried to regain last year’s consistency.  He’ll be put to work immediately, as Rodriguez is scheduled to start tonight’s game against the Diamondbacks.

Barraclough was claimed off waivers from the Nationals just last week, and now could potentially be on the move again in what has been a trying season.  Barraclough allowed eight homers in just 25 2/3 innings for the Nats, leading to an ugly 2.5 HR/9 and 6.66 ERA.  After posting a measly 0.4 HR/9 in his first three seasons for the Marlins, Barraclough’s number jumped up to 1.4 HR/9 in 2018, which was perhaps one of the reasons Miami was willing to deal in a trade with Washington last October.  Beyond the increasingly worrisome long-ball issues, Barraclough also spent roughly four weeks on the injured list this year due to nerve irritation in his forearm.

The Giants have claimed right-handed reliever Kyle Barraclough off waivers from the Nationals, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic reports. He’ll head to Triple-A Sacramento. Meanwhile, infielder Tyler Austin has elected free agency after clearing waivers (Twitter links).

Barraclough was a failed offseason pickup for the Nationals, who acquired him with the expectation he’d help repair their bullpen. Instead, the 29-year-old recorded a 6.66 ERA/6.57 FIP with 10.52 K/9 against 4.21 BB/9 in 25 2/3 innings. The Nationals then designated him for assignment earlier this week.

Austin, 27, joined Barraclough in being designated this week. He struggled to a .187/.283/.403 line with eight home runs in 152 plate appearances this season before the Giants moved on from him.

Nationals Designate Kyle Barraclough For Assignment

The Nationals have designated right-hander Kyle Barraclough for assignment, per a team announcement. His spot on the roster will go to infielder Asdrubal Cabrera, whose previously reported one-year contract has now been officially announced by the Nationals. Infielder Adrian Sanchez has been optioned to Double-A Harrisburg in an additional corresponding move.

Acquired in a rare October trade that sent international bonus allotments from Washington to Miami, Barraclough was viewed as a controllable, buy-low ’pen option at the time the Nationals picked him up. While he was fresh off a fairly disappointing 4.20 ERA in 55 2/3 innings, Barraclough joined the Nationals with a long track record of missing bats and posting quality bottom-line results to match his gaudy strikeout totals. From 2015-18, Barraclough pitched to a 3.21 earned run average with 11.5 K/9 against 5.5 BB/9 in 218 2/3 innings of work. Although his walk rate was too high, he offset some of those strike-throwing issues with a minimal 0.6 HR/9 mark.

The 2019 campaign, however, proved to be an unmitigated disaster for Barraclough. Gone was his penchant for limiting the long ball — a problem that has plagued many hurlers throughout the league, albeit not to this extent — as he served up eight dingers in just 25 2/3 innings. Barraclough’s time with the Nationals will likely come to a close with a dismal 6.66 ERA and a 30-to-12 K/BB ratio in those 25 2/3 frames.

The Nats won’t have the opportunity to trade him thanks to the newly implemented August trade restrictions, but they could potentially save a bit of cash if another organization claims Barraclough on outright waivers. While this year’s results are obviously troubling, the 29-year-old Barraclough is making $1.725MM in 2019 and is controllable through the 2021 season.

A team willing to take on his remaining $510K salary this season would only owe him a small raise in arbitration and then would have the opportunity to help the right-hander round back into form. Between that and the fact that Barraclough has two minor league option years remaining beyond the 2019 campaign, a claim seems fairly likely. Other clubs have limited access to acquiring depth, and an optionable bullpen piece with a solid pre-2019 track record will be difficult to come by between now and the Aug. 31 deadline for postseason eligibility.

Nationals Option Kyle Barraclough, Recall Adrian Sanchez

The Nationals optioned Kyle Barraclough to Double-A Harrisburg today, recalling well-traveled infielder Adrian Sanchez, the team announced.

Barraclough, 29, represents the “successful” half of the Nats offseason bullpen upgrades. Entering the season, Washington hoped to install the since-departed Trevor Rosenthal as their eighth inning man, with Barraclough targeted for seventh inning setup duties. Obviously, the Nats had to audible not long into the season as Rosenthal imploded like few pitchers can, while Barraclough’s struggles were more pedestrian in comparison. Still, Barraclough ultimately landed on the injured list with nerve irritation in mid-June.

Yesterday marked Barraclough’s return, which he celebrated with a wild pitch before Justin Turner launched a 3-1 get-me-over fastball into the left field bleachers for the  game-winning three-run homer. He did retire Cody Bellinger to end the inning, but Barraclough nonetheless finds himself headed back from whence he came not 24 hours after his arrival.

For the season, the Nats called on Barraclough 33 times for 25 2/3 innings with a 6.66 ERA (6.57 FIP). His walk rate (4.2 BB/9) is actually at a career low, while his 10.5 K/9 is his highest mark since 2016. Those improvements have paled in comparison to the regression in terms of quality of contact surrendered, however. Hitters against Barraclough have seen their year-over-year solid contact rates improve from 1.4% to 10.0% and barrel rates from 4.8% to 13.8%. Those contact rates have yielded 11.6 hits per nine innings and 2.8 HR/9.

As for Sanchez, 28, he returns to his place at the end of the Nationals bench. Today marks Sanchez’s seventh stint with the big league club this season, where he serves as the emergency backup shortstop and rarely-used 25th man. For the season he has started just once with 20 total plate appearances. He has four hits and seven strikeouts. Without Sanchez, the Nationals don’t have a backup for shortstop Trea Turner on the roster, but given the rarity with which the Nats put Sanchez to use, one would think a playoff contender like Washington could find a better use for a roster spot.

Nationals Activate, Option Kyle Barraclough

The Nationals announced today that they have activated righty Kyle Barraclough from the 10-day injured list. Rather than bringing him back onto the MLB roster, the club optioned Barraclough to Double-A.

Barraclough had been sidelined since mid-June with nerve irritation in his right forearm. The 29-year-old, acquired over the offseason, is earning $1.725MM this year in his first season of arbitration eligibility.

Before hitting the shelf, Barraclough had struggled to a 6.39 ERA in 25 1/3 innings. Despite a solid 30:12 K/BB ratio, the righty reliever was touched for seven long balls. Statcast has in the past credited Barraclough with maintaining low hard-hit rates, helping to offset his typically hefty walk numbers. But opposing hitters have jumped him for 43.6% hard contact this year as he has continued to shed fastball velocity (from an early-career peak of 96.6 mph down to 93.7 mph in 2019).

The Nats may well need to call upon Barraclough again later in the season, but they’ll first see if they can find more consistency from other arms. The D.C. relief unit still lacks much in the way of stability, though it is no longer performing at historically awful rates after an unbelievably poor start to the year.

Nationals Place Kyle Barraclough On IL

10:46am: Barraclough began feeling pain in his forearm after Saturday’s game and will go for an examination Sunday, manager Dave Martinez told reporters (via Jesse Dougherty of the Washington Post).

10:14am: The Nationals have placed right-handed reliever Kyle Barraclough on the 10-day injured list with “radial nerve irritation,” Todd Dybas of NBC Sports Washington reports. The club recalled infielder Adrian Sanchez from Double-A Harrisburg to take Barraclough’s roster spot.

Barraclough’s IL placement comes on the heels of his latest brutal 2019 outing, in which he surrendered three earned runs on three hits (including one homer) and a walk during a loss to the Diamondbacks on Saturday. Barraclough, who recorded just one out in the game, has now given up multiple earned runs in six appearances since May 12. Thanks in part to tumbling velocity, the ex-flamethrower has stumbled to an ugly 6.39 ERA/6.04 FIP in 25 1/3 innings this year.

Barraclough, to his credit, has fanned 10.66 batters per nine and slashed his walk rate from in the fives over previous seasons to 4.26 this year. However, the ex-Marlin has seen his groundball rate fall to 37.7 percent, down almost 7 points compared to his career mark, and has yielded a lofty 2.49 homers per nine. That’s not what the Nationals had in mind when they acquired the 29-year-old at the outset of last offseason.

Thus far, Barraclough has been one of many problems in a Washington bullpen that has been downright awful. The struggles of the Nationals’ relief unit have played a large role in their dismal 32-38 start.

Ryan Tepera, Kyle Barraclough Lose Arbitration Cases

Blue Jays right-hander Ryan Tepera and Nationals righty Kyle Barraclough have lost their arbitration cases against their respective teams, Jeff Passan of ESPN reports (via Twitter). Tepera will be paid at the $1.525MM rate filed by the Blue Jays rather than the $1.8MM figure submitted by his camp. Barraclough, meanwhile, will earn $1.725MM rather than the $2MM at which he filed.

Tepera, 31, isn’t exactly a household name but has emerged as a quality setup piece for the Jays over the past four seasons. In 193 2/3 innings to this point in his career, he’s compiled a 3.49 ERA with 8.8 K/9, 3.2 BB/9 and a 44.8 percent ground-ball rate. The righty stepped into a ninth-inning role for a bit in Toronto last year and tallied seven saves to go along with 19 holds. The loss in today’s case will set a lower launching point for Tepera in future cases, thus limiting his earning in each of his next two trips through arbitration before he reaches free agency after the 2021 campaign.

Barraclough, 28, hasn’t even suited up for the Nats yet, as he was acquired from the Marlins in a rare October trade. He’s posted gaudy strikeout numbers through the first four seasons of his career but also battled control issues, having ultimately logged a 3.21 ERA with 11.5 K/9 against 5.5 BB/9. Last season was Barraclough’s worst, as he turned in a career-high 4.20 ERA with a career-low 9.7 K/9. He did, to his credit, tally 10 saves in a partial run as Miami’s closer. As is the case with Tepera, he’s controlled through the 2021 season.

As can be seen in MLBTR’s 2019 Arbitration Tracker, today’s rulings have evened the score between teams and players at three victories apiece.
