Olney’s Latest: Wolf, Lohse, Sabathia, Fuentes, Oswalt, Bailey

By Sarah Green | June 28, 2008 at 2:27pm CDT

Buster Olney has a new column up. Let’s take a look:

  • He suggests Randy Wolf as a "possible trade chip" with the Padres looking increasingly out of it this year. One problem: Wolf has veto power over trades to 14 teams. He’s been decent this year, with a 4.13 ERA and 89 strikeouts in 98 innings, but nothing to get too excited over.
  • Gossip item: the Mets could have had Kyle Lohse for what the Cardinals are paying ($4.25MM), only Omar Minaya passed.
  • Olney doesn’t see much in the speculation about the Angels wanting C.C. Sabathia. With Kelvim Escobar’s rehab going well, great first-half performances from Joe Saunders and Ervin Santana, and John Lackey likely to improve going forward, why should they make a push for C.C.? Olney sees the Brewers and the Cubs as more interested parties. (Ken Rosenthal mentioned the Brewers and the Rays as C.C. suitors yesterday.) Later in the post, Olney notes that Sabathia has a 1.96 ERA in his last fourteen starts. Yowza.
  • How the Rockies fare over the next two weeks could determine what becomes of Brian Fuentes.
  • Olney can’t decide whether the Orioles should buy or sell. What do you think?
  • Roy Oswalt won’t get traded, with Olney linking to the Houston Chronicle’s Richard Justice for his evidence. (Oswalt has, of course, been talking like he’d prefer to be somewhere else.) Also working against a deal for Oswalt: his continued experiments with pitching to contact (to keep the ol’ pitch count down) haven’t been going very well this year, either. His K/9 has been declining for years, of course, but it may have reached a point of no return this season. Whatever happens, I’m sure the ’stros would prefer to move him at peak value, not right now when he has a 4.77 ERA.
  • Homer Bailey, back in Triple A Louisville, isn’t getting any love from the scout quoted here, who says he threw "batting practice fastballs." Bailey was 0-3 with a 8.73 ERA in the majors this year after a hotly anticipated call-up. Given the bounty of young arms they already have, the Reds would probably prefer to trade him…but alas, his value has dropped the way his curveball used to.

John Mozeliak Chat On MLB.com

By Tim Dierkes | May 5, 2008 at 2:29pm CDT

Cardinals GM John Mozeliak chatted with fans over at MLB.com.  Let’s dig out the hot stove info.

  • Mozeliak seems open to talking extension with Kyle Lohse at some point during the season.  Lohse has a 3.79 ERA in seven starts.  Less than 3% of his flyballs are leaving the yard, a trend that doesn’t figure to last.  But for less than $5MM, who’s complaining?
  • Mozeliak reiterated that the Cardinals have no interest in Barry Bonds.
  • Trade talks "could be exciting" come July.
  • Sadly, Juan Encarnacion is not likely to play baseball again.

Lohse/Cardinals Deal Official

By Tim Dierkes | March 14, 2008 at 3:35pm CDT

TODAY: Lohse passed his physical; it’s official.

THURSDAY: According to Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Cardinals signed Kyle Lohse to a one-year deal (pending a physical).

The deal is worth $4.25MM plus incentives, a fine deal by John Mozeliak.  The Cardinals needed some depth, and Lohse offers upside beyond just innings (especially under Dave Duncan).  Lohse has to be bummed – he was looking for ten times what he received.  On the other hand, he’s still set for life.

Nats To Pass On Weaver

By Tim Dierkes | March 14, 2008 at 12:11pm CDT

Scott Boras found a deal for Kyle Lohse; will he now focus on getting Jeff Weaver a job?  On Monday, Jeff’s brother Jered said the Nationals and Cardinals had expressed interest.  The Cards are surely out of the mix now, and MLB.com’s Bill Ladson says Weaver has seemingly "priced himself out of the Nats’ pay range."  I’ll guess the Nats were thinking $2MM or so.

So if the Nats and Cards are both out, what’s the elder Weaver to do?  Baltimore seems to be his best option.  Toronto could work.  Perhaps the Astros as a long shot.

In a note at the bottom of his article, Ladson also quashes a short-lived Felipe Lopez to the Cubs rumor.  He adds that the Dodgers have legitimate interest in Willie Harris.

Odds and Ends: Mirabelli, Lohse, Spring Stats

By Tim Dierkes | March 13, 2008 at 11:51am CDT

Here are some links I’ve cobbled together.

  • Surprise move by the Red Sox, releasing Doug Mirabelli.
  • Check out this typically lengthy blog entry from Joe Posnanski.  I laughed out loud twice.  Read it.
  • Derrick Goold says the Cards are having "continued dialogue" with Kyle Lohse’s people.  Viva El Birdos considers this a test for ownership.
  • With a hat tip to John Dewan, RotoAuthority attempts to find some meaning in this year’s spring training stats.
  • If you haven’t already, take a look at my video mailbag from yesterday.  We should have one of those MLB Roundup things on the way this week too.

Astros To Pass On Lohse

By Tim Dierkes | March 12, 2008 at 7:28pm CDT

This morning, Brian McTaggart of the Houston Chronicle suggested the Astros’ rotation picture looked like this:

1. Roy Oswalt
2. Brandon Backe
3. Wandy Rodriguez
4. Woody Williams
5. Shawn Chacon as the frontrunner, with Chris Sampson, Felipe Paulino, Runelvys Hernandez, Jack Cassel, Mark McLemore, and Brian Moehler in the mix

Now Paulino is out a month with a pinched nerve.  Williams has been destroyed this spring.  So now it’s looking like Oswalt/Backe/Rodriguez/Chacon/Sampson.

Not exactly playoff quality nor likely to stay healthy all year.  However, Ed Wade said today he doesn’t see Kyle Lohse as a fit for around $4MM.  Scott Boras called him up last week to pitch his client.  Wade has been quite open in the press about his free agent discussions.

Given the uncertainty around everyone besides Oswalt and Rodriguez, Wade might do well to reconsider Lohse if he has room in the budget.  Otherwise, Jeff Blair says the Cardinals, Rangers, and Giants have Lohse on the radar (but not the Jays).

Cardinals Interested In Lohse

By Tim Dierkes | March 12, 2008 at 8:21am CDT

Joel Pineiro’s second bout of shoulder tightness this spring has the Cardinals scrambling for pitching help.  Fortunately there are still a few names left on the market who are probably as good as Pineiro.  One such pitcher is Kyle Lohse; the Cardinals put in an inquiry with Scott Boras recently.

GM John Mozeliak was upfront in saying that Pineiro’s uncertainty changes the landscape for his team.  If Lohse truly goes in the $4-5MM range we’ve been hearing about, that’s a fine signing.  Hell, Pineiro got two years and $13MM and was more questionable than Lohse at the time of the signing.  Jeff Weaver and David Wells are the other two names we’ve heard linked to St. Louis this winter.  A few people have asked me about Eric Milton.  He had Tommy John surgery on June 15th, so he’d be of no help to the Cards right now.

Rockin’ The Red gives five reasons why they think the Cards should sign Lohse, if you’re interested.

Baseball Blogs Weigh In: Crisp, Capuano, Lohse

By Cork Gaines | March 11, 2008 at 2:25pm CDT

Does anybody else think that Brian Roberts’ agent fuels 90% of these rumors just so his client’s name is kept in the news? Me neither…Now that we have gotten the obligatory Roberts reference out of the way, let’s move on to some trades/signings that might actually happen in the near future. The biggest of course is the recent news that talks may be heating up with the Red Sox to move Coco Crisp. So far we know that the Sox are not interested in Jason Marquis or Sam Fuld and the Padres may only be having internal discussions at this point (although one writer does not see the Padres as serious suitors). Let’s take a look at what is being written about Crisp and a few others in the Blogosphere…

If there is a topic you would like to see covered in "Baseball Blogs Weigh In" please let me know HERE.

  • Red Sox News doesn’t like the rumored offer of Jason Marquis and Sam Fuld for Crisp. More likely they believe a package of Josh Donaldson and either Bobby Howry or Carmen Pignatiello could be accepted by the Sox.
  • Boston Sports Buzz sees Crisp as a nice solution for the Padres, since they currently employ one utility player and two injuries-waiting-to-happen in the outfield while lacking a legitimate leadoff hitter.
  • El Guapo’s Ghost also sees the Padres as the logical destination for Crisp, noting that prospect Kyle Blanks may be expendable for the Pads and fill the vacancy of power-hitting prospects in the Red Sox organization.
  • Hire Jim Essian is not too keen on Crisp, so they are rooting hard for Felix Pie to play well and keep "punching the baseball in its stupid face."
  • Goat Riders is not crazy about Crisp playing center for the Cubbies, but prefer him to the alternatives.
  • Right Field Bleachers notes that the Brewers may trade Chris Capuano before Opening Day as he needs a change of scenery and he still has some value on the market. They do not see the Red Sox as a good match since the Brew Crew does not need a center fielder (i.e. Crisp).
  • Rockin’ the Red laments the loss of another starting pitcher and acknowledges that it is time to look outside the organization for help. They would rather the Cardinals sign Kyle Lohse as opposed to Jeff Weaver.
  • Viva El Birdos would also prefer Lohse to any other outside options, and would opt for in-house options if Lohse is not signed.

Cork Gaines writes for Rays Index and can be reached here.

Cafardo’s Latest: Inge, Marte, Fuentes, Lohse

By Tim Dierkes | March 11, 2008 at 8:31am CDT

TUESDAY: Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post has an update to Cafardo’s Yankees/Fuentes item.  Renck says that while the Yanks have scouted Fuentes, Rockies’ GM Dan O’Dowd says there’s "zero chance" of a trade at this time.  I imagine he wants to see a healthy Luis Vizcaino before considering it.

MONDAY: Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe checks in with plenty of rumors in his Sunday column.

  • The Red Sox checked in on Brandon Inge during the Winter Meetings, but found his contract prohibitive.  Most teams seem to feel the same way.
  • The Yankees are eyeing southpaw relievers Damaso Marte and Brian Fuentes, who’ve seemingly been on their radar for months.  Fuentes makes $5.05MM this year, Marte makes $2MM this year with a $6MM club option for ’09.
  • Cafardo believes the Noah Lowry injury could cause the Giants to swoop in on Kyle Lohse, and could also get in the way of a Joe Crede acquisition.  Lowry’s only supposed to miss two to three weeks though.  Kenny Williams says exactly two clubs have talked to him about Crede, but he’s saying Crede may still be his Opening Day third baseman.

Stark’s Latest: Davis, Valdez, Roberts, Lofton

By Tim Dierkes | March 10, 2008 at 9:30pm CDT

ESPN’s Jayson Stark checks in with a blog entry jam-packed with rumorage.

  • Stark says the Giants are shopping Rich Aurilia, Ray Durham, Steve Kline, Randy Winn, Tyler Walker, Rajai Davis, and Merkin Valdez.  The vets we knew about; the last two are a surprise.  Probably stems from both being out of options.
  • Brian Roberts update: Stark talked to a club official who’s in touch with the Cubs and O’s.  That guy expects a deal to be done next week.  Plus, Stark sees the O’s as an active suitor for Kyle Lohse at the right price.
  • Stark confirms the rumblings that the Rays have checked in on Kenny Lofton.  Lofton could be a nice bargain this year for a couple mil.
