Royals To Promote Carter Jensen

With rosters expanding to 28 players tomorrow, the Royals have already announced the moves they “anticipate” making, as per the club’s wording.  First baseman/outfielder Jac Caglianone will be activated from the 10-day injured list, righty Luinder Avila will be called up from Triple-A, and catching prospect Carter Jensen’s contract will be selected from Triple-A.  Kansas City will need to subtract someone from the current 26-man roster to make space for the entire trio, but the Royals already have 40-man roster space available to accommodate Jensen.

Freddy Fermin was traded to the Padres at the deadline, and the Royals have since been using veteran Luke Maile as the backup catcher behind Salvador Perez.  Because Perez will get his share of DH days to keep his bat in the lineup, Jensen should get a decent amount of playing time behind the plate in his first taste of MLB action.  The expanded September roster allows the Royals some flexibility in keeping three catchers around, and Maile’s playing time is probably going to diminish since Jensen is a bigger future priority.

Jensen hit well enough (.292/.360/.420 in 308 PA) in Double-A ball to earn his first promotion to Triple-A earlier this summer, and he has taken it up a notch since arriving in Omaha.  Jensen has hit .288/.404/.647 in 184 Triple-A plate appearances, with already 14 home runs to show for his brief time at the top rung of the minor league ladder.  This kind of performance is hard to overlook, and it has earned the Kansas City native a late-season look with his hometown team.

A third-round pick for the Royals in the 2021 draft, Jensen is ranked 69th on MLB Pipeline’s list of baseball’s best prospects, and he sits 88th on Baseball America’s top-100 ranking.  Evaluators like Jansen’s ability to get on base, and his 2025 numbers suggest he has started to tap into his raw power.  Jensen has a good eye at the plate, but it is worth noting that his strikeout rate has shot upwards during his brief time at Triple-A.  As a catcher, Jensen has a plus throwing arm and his framing ability has been improving, and both Pipeline and BA feel he can be a solid defender.

The Royals will surely exercise their $13.5MM club option on Perez for 2026, but that will also be Perez’s age-36 season, so the longtime face of the franchise will have to slow down at some point.  Beyond Jensen, Blake Mitchell is another top-100 prospect who just advanced to high-A ball this season, and Ramon Ramirez is another young backstop in the system playing at the A-ball level.

Unsurprisingly, rival teams checked in on these young catchers prior to the trade deadline, but K.C. instead pivoted by moving Fermin.  Jensen is the first of this trio to make it to the Show, so he’ll get the first crack at trying to establish himself as a big leaguer.  He’ll retain rookie eligibility heading into 2026, and thus due to Prospect Promotion Incentive eligibility, the Royals could earn an extra draft pick if Jensen stays on the active roster for the entire 2026 campaign.

A former top prospect in his own right, Caglianone will return after a left hamstring strain cost him about five weeks on the injured list.  Caglianone hit only .147/.205/.280 in his first 161 PA in the majors, so this IL stint can perhaps act as a refresh for the outfielder’s rookie year.  It remains to be seen how many at-bats Caglianone will receive for a Royals team that is fighting for a playoff berth, since deadline acquisition Mike Yastrzemski has stepped into Caglianone’s right field spot and been on a tear since arriving in Kansas City.

Royals Place Hunter Harvey On Injured List

Today: Manager Matt Quatraro tells MLB.com’s Anne Rogers that Harvey’s injury is a Grade 2 strain, and thus, the righty will miss “significant” time. However, the Royals remain “hopeful” that he can return before the end of the season.

August 11: The Royals announced today that right-hander Hunter Harvey has been placed on the 15-day injured list due to a right adductor strain. Fellow righty Luinder Avila has been recalled in the corresponding move and will be making his major league debut as soon as he gets into a game.

Harvey’s IL stint is another frustrating development in his tenure as a Royal. He was acquired from the Nationals in July of 2024. He was still a year and a half away from free agency at that time, so the Royals were presumably hoping to get a decent amount of good innings from him.

Unfortunately, he’s been injured for a large chunk of the time since that trade. He made six appearances after the trade before mid-back tightness sent him to the IL in August. He wasn’t able to return to the club down the stretch. This year, a teres major strain put him on the shelf in mid-April. He was reinstated from the IL on July 25th but is now back there yet again.

Around the IL stints, Harvey has still been good. He has thrown 10 2/3 scoreless innings this year. He has punched out 28.2% of batters faced while only giving out walks to 2.6% of opponents. It’s unclear how long the club expects him to be out of action but they will have to proceed without Harvey for at least another couple of weeks. That’s less than ideal with the club hanging onto a slim chance of competing. They are currently four games back in the American League Wild Card picture, needing to leapfrog three teams to get a spot.

Avila, 23, will try to pick up some of the slack. An international signing out of Venezuela, the Royals added him to their 40-man roster in November to keep him out of the Rule 5 draft, but this will be his first time on the active roster of the big league club.

He has largely been a starter in his minor league career but has been working shorter stints lately. He landed on the minor league IL in late May due to a shoulder impingement, per Anne Rogers of MLB.com. He only began a rehab assignment a couple of weeks back. He has made four appearances in that recent span, working on a starter’s schedule but not having eclipsed three innings in any of those outings. He could perhaps make his major league debut in a long relief capacity.

On the season as a whole, he has tossed 50 1/3 innings with a 4.47 ERA, 28.8% strikeout rate, 10.4% walk rate and 45.7% ground ball rate. Baseball America currently ranks him as the #23 prospect in the system, noting that he could have a future as a back-end starter, though an eventual move to relief role is also a long-term possibility.

Royals Select Three Players To 40-Man Roster

The Royals have selected left-hander Noah Cameron, right-hander Luinder Avila, and right-hander Eric Cerantola to their 40-man roster ahead of this evening’s Rule 5 Draft protection deadline, per a team announcement. No corresponding moves were necessary, and the club’s 40-man roster now stands at 37 players.

Cameron, 25, was a seventh-round pick by the Royals in 2021. A starter at every level of the minors so far, the southpaw struggled badly in his first taste of Double-A action last year but made significant strides this year. After seeing Cameron pitch to a solid 3.63 ERA in 16 starts at that level, the Royals promoted him to Triple-A where he really took off over nine starts down the stretch. In 54 1/3 Triple-A innings, Cameron posted a 2.32 ERA while striking out 29% of opponents and walking just 5.1%. That late-season breakout at the highest level of the minors surely made it an easy decision to roster the lefty ahead of today’s protection deadline.

Avila, 23, signed with the Royals out of Venezuela and made his pro debut back in 2018. The righty moved to stateside ball in 2021 as a starting pitcher and has generally stayed in that role throughout his time in the minors. This year, Avila made 19 starts for the club’s Double-A affiliate in Northwest Arkansas, pitching to a solid 3.81 ERA in 82 2/3 innings of work with a 22.9% strikeout rate. That earned Avila a promotion to Triple-A, though he was shelled for five runs in 4 1/3 innings of work in his lone start at the level this year. Even so, the Royals evidently decided he was close enough to the majors to warrant protection from the Rule 5 Draft next month.

Cerantola, 24, was selected by Kansas City in the fifth-round of the 2021 draft. The right-hander has mostly acted as a multi-inning reliever throughout his time in the minors and posted big strikeout numbers in Double-A this year, punching out 31.7% of opponents faced. Unfortunately, that was accompanied by an untenable 16.2% walk rate. The right-hander’s 2.78 ERA in 58 1/3 innings at the level earned him a midseason promotion to Triple-A, but those underlying issues remained following the promotion. In 14 1/3 frames at the minors’ highest level, Cerantola walked 12.5% of opponents but made up for it with a 31.3% strikeout rate while posting a 3.77 ERA for the Royals’ Omaha affiliate. As an upper-minors relief prospect with impressive stuff, it’s hardly a surprise the Royals decided to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft rather than risk a team attempting to stash him in their bullpen next year.
