Minor Moves: Septimo, Carroll, Atilano, Garner

By Steve Adams | February 10, 2014 at 4:22pm CDT

Here are today's minor moves and outright assignments from around the league…

  • Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish reports (Twitter links) that four former Major Leaguers have signed with the independent Atlantic League's Lancaster Barnstormers: left-hander Leyson Septimo, outfielder Brett Carroll, right-hander Luis Atilano and outfielder Cole Garner. Septimo (White Sox) and Carroll (Nationals) both appeared in the Majors as recently as 2012. Garner hasn't seen the bigs since a brief callup with the 2011 Rockies, and Atilano hasn't pitched in the Majors since 2010 with the Nats.
  • Four players currently reside in DFA limbo (as shown in our DFA Tracker): Jimmy Paredes of the Marlins, Donovan Hand of the Brewers, Brett Wallace of the Astros and Emilio Bonifacio of the Royals. Bonifacio, however, will soon learn his fate, as he's reportedly been placed on release waivers. Teams will have until tomorrow to claim him and his $3.5MM salary. Otherwise, he'll be eligible to sign anywhere as a free agent.

Minor Moves: Bianchi, Threets, Gallagher, Atilano

By Mark Polishuk | December 9, 2011 at 3:15pm CDT

Here are some of the day's minor transactions…

  • The Cubs have acquired minor league infielder Jeff Bianchi on a waiver claim, the team announced.  Bianchi was designated for assignment by the Royals last week to make room for Jonathan Broxton on their 40-man roster.  Bianchi was a second-round pick for K.C. in the 2005 draft and has yet to reach the majors, though he missed close to two full seasons recovering from a torn labrum (2006) and reconstuctive elbow surgery (2010).
  • The Athletics have signed left-hander Erick Threets to a minor league deal, tweets Matthew Eddy of Baseball America.  Threets, 30, last pitched in the Majors in 2010, throwing 12.1 scoreless relief innings for the White Sox.
  • The Reds signed right-handers Luis Atilano and Sean Gallagher to minor league deals, reports Eddy.
  • The Brewers have signed catcher Mike Rivera to a minor league contract, reports MLB.com's Adam McCalvy.  The deal includes an invitation to the Brewers' big league spring training camp and is worth $500K if Rivera makes the Major League roster.  Rivera, 35, has spent five of the last six years in the Brewers' organization and will provide the club with extra catching depth.
  • The Rangers signed Alberto Gonzalez to a minor league contract with an invite to the Major League spring training camp, reports MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan.  Gonzalez was released by the Padres last month.  The utility infielder has a career .242/.281/.317 line in 908 Major League plate appearances over five seasons with the Padres, Nationals and Yankees.
  • The Yankees have designated Colin Curtis for assignment, tweets MLB.com's Bryan Hoch.  The move creates space on New York's 40-man roster for Freddy Garcia, whose signing was made official today.  Curtis, a fourth-round draft pick in 2006, has 64 Major League plate appearances to his name.

Luis Atilano Clears Waivers

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | February 20, 2011 at 1:14pm CDT

SUNDAY: Atilano has cleared waivers and has been assigned to Triple-A Syracuse, tweets Ben Goessling of MASNsports. He will report to Spring Training with the big league camp.

WEDNESDAY: The Nationals announced that they designated right-hander Luis Atilano for assignment to create roster space for Adam LaRoche, whose contract was finally approved (Twitter link).

Atilano started 16 games for the Nationals last year and posted a 5.15 ERA with 4.2 K/9 and 3.4 BB/9 in 85 2/3 innings. The 2003 first rounder has never induced many strikeouts as a pro, but he doesn't walk hitters, either. In 604 1/3 minor league innings, the 25-year-old right-hander has a 3.93 ERA with 4.8 K/9 and 2.0 BB/9.
