Nomar Garciaparra

Nomar Might Be On The Move

By | August 30, 2009 at 9:03pm CDT

According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, "there remains a small chance Nomar Garciaparra will go to a contender" before Monday's waiver trade deadline.

Garciaparra, according to Slusser's sources, cleared waivers "some time ago."  The Phillies had interest in the utilityman this winter and reportedly sent scouts to watch him play this weekend.  Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. said recently that his club is done dealing, but there remains some need for a right-handed hitting presence on the reigning World Champions' bench beyond Ben Francisco and Eric Bruntlett.

Nomar has gone hitless in his last 14 pinch-hit appearances and is batting just .264/.299/.364 this season with two home runs and 13 RBI in 129 at-bats for the A's.  But he's a .321/.386/.589 career postseason hitter with seven home runs and 24 RBI over 112 late-October at-bats, and has always been regarded as a solid clubhouse guy.

Phillies Likely Done Dealing

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 27, 2009 at 8:58am CDT

The Phillies are still watching the waiver wire, but GM Ruben Amaro Jr. told Andy Martino of the Philadelphia Inquirer that his team has likely made its last trade of the season. Greg Dobbs hurt his calf last week, which weakened the Phillies' bench, but Amaro says the injury is "not serious." Martino suggests the Phillies could call on Andy Tracy, a power-hitting minor leaguer, to complement Dobbs and Matt Stairs.

Nomar Garciaparra has said he'd consider a trade to Philadelphia, so Amaro can explore other options if he decides to look outside of the organization.

Could Nomar Fit In Philly?

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 10, 2009 at 9:01am CDT

When asked if he'd accept a deal to the Phillies, Nomar Garciaparra said "Sure, why not?" according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle  The Phillies are looking for a right-handed bench bat and they had interest in Garciaparra in the offseason. The 36-year-old is hitting .265/.300/.372 and his base salary is just $1MM.

More August Trade Candidates

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 5, 2009 at 1:39pm CDT

Nobody's been traded so far in August, but deals are sure to go through. ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick considers some trade candidates:

  • Doug Davis and Jon Garland
  • Heath Bell – An unlikely trade candidate, since he's sure to be claimed, but he could be dealt even if he's claimed (to the NL team with the worst record among all claiming teams).
  • Lyle Overbay – He makes $7MM next year, a deterrent for possible suitors.
  • Justin Duchscherer – Some health concerns remain, as he hasn't pitched in the majors this year.
  • Kevin Millar, Nomar Garciaparra and Jason Giambi – Veteran bats for the playoffs.
  • Jamey Carroll – Mark Teahen's another utility type, but he's less likely to be dealt than Carroll.
  • Carl Pavano – Just don't expect the Yankees to come calling.
  • Arthur Rhodes and David Weathers
  • Miguel Batista

Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times looks into Mariners trade candidates:

  • Russell Branyan won't clear waivers, but the Mariners could consider dealing six weeks of Branyan to the claiming team for a decent prospect.
  • Like Duchscherer, Erik Bedard has to prove he's healthy before anyone will commit to him.
  • Baker expects the Mariners to try to move Adrian Beltre. They won't want to offer him arbitration after the season and risk paying him $14MM or so next year, so now's their chance to get a return for Beltre. They would almost certainly have to pick up salary in the process.

A’s Rumors: Garciaparra, Springer, Crosby

By Eddie Schmid | August 2, 2009 at 9:55am CDT

Susan Slusser at the San Francisco Chronicle says that the A's will be pressed to make a roster move upon the return of Jason Giambi this Tuesday, though it's unclear what the move will be. She notes that the A's essentially have five first basemen on their roster and wonders if one could be traded.

Slusser suggests that Nomar Garciaparra could generate interest as a bench bat in a waiver deal, but Billy Beane would likely ask for Garciaparra's approval before any move. She also notes that four teams' interest in Russ Springer before the deadline could spell a deal this month (the Cardinals were known to have some interest in Springer). No teams have reportedly made a call about Bobby Crosby, and she believes it's unlikely he is waived.

Odds And Ends: Bedard, Astros, Marquis

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 7, 2009 at 10:08am CDT

Links for Tuesday morning…

  • Be here at 2pm CST for this week's chat.
  • Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette profiles controversial acquisition Lastings Milledge, who seems energized and motivated.
  • It would be hard to argue with Amber Theoharis of MASN.com, who says the Orioles won the Erik Bedard deal since they acquired two All-Stars in George Sherrill and Adam Jones.
  • As MLB.com's Christian Caple reports, Bedard will be on a 60 pitch limit as he returns to the hill tonight against his former team.
  • Nomar Garciaparra told Mike McDermott of the Providence Journal that he didn't turn down $60MM from the Red Sox.
  • Experts consider the Astros' system weak, but at least they have Bud Norris and Yorman Bazardo in Triple A, as Zachary Levine of the Houston Chronicle reports.
  • The Jason Marquis deal has worked out better-than-expected for the Rockies, but, as Dave Krieger of the Denver Post notes, the Rockies have made plenty of smart deals over the years.

Cabrera, Garciaparra Contract Details

By Tim Dierkes | March 9, 2009 at 2:04pm CDT

Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post has details on the newly signed contracts for A’s infielders Orlando Cabrera and Nomar Garciaparra.

Cabrera has a $4MM base salary, and he’ll receive a $250K bonus if traded.  Interestingly, the A’s agreed not to offer him arbitration if he’s a Type A free agent after the season.  Cabrera is not inclined to let draft pick compensation get in his way the next time around.

Garciaparra gets a $1MM base plus $150K if he gets 300 plate appearances.  He can earn additional money for days spent on the 25-man roster.

Cafardo’s Latest: Mauer, Red Sox, Glavine

By Nat Boyle | March 8, 2009 at 9:52am CDT

With every Sunday come rumors from the Boston Globe’s Nick Cafardo:

  • Cafardo asks Tom Glavine whether he’d consider another year if 2009 is a success. Glavine didn’t say no: "I’m not prepared right now to say. It would take a lot of good things to happen this year to consider playing next year. Last year, I didn’t think I’d be sitting here this year, so I guess you never know."
  • Nomar Garciaparra had placed a call to the Red Sox front office inquiring about their potential interest.
  • If he hits free agency, Joe Mauer is expected to receive offers in the $20-25MM range and "The Sox are expected to be front and center." Mauer is signed with the Twins through 2010. He’ll make $10.5MM this year and $12.5MM in 2010.
  • Dusty Baker thinks Barry Bonds would still be a top hitter in the league. Says Baker, "He’s one of those guys that will be able to pick up a bat when he’s an old man and still get a hit."
  • Andruw Jones is 4 for 18 with 10 strikeouts to start spring training.
  • Scouts agree: George Kottaras would clear waivers if designated for assignment, meaning the Red Sox may not have to deal the catching prospect.
  • Cafardo would make the Clay Buchholz-Jarrod Saltalamacchia trade right now.

Odds & Ends: Gload, Pierre, Beimel

By Tim Dierkes | March 6, 2009 at 11:09am CDT

Links for Friday…

  • The Dodgers designated Justin Orenduff for assignment to make room for Manny Ramirez, according to Tony Jackson.
  • The A's contracts with Orlando Cabrera and Nomar Garciaparra are official.
  • WEEI's Alex Speier talked to Marlins prospect Mike Stanton and manager Fredi Gonzalez about the near-acquisition of Manny last summer.
  • In another column, Speier looks at the players the Red Sox and Yankees have battled for in recent years.
  • Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch says a bunch of relievers are vying for one bullpen spot for the Cardinals, now that they've signed Dennys Reyes.
  • Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star suggests there's a chance the Royals release first baseman Ross Gload and eat the $1.9MM owed to him in 2009.  Rany Jazayerli talks about Gload as well as the chances of the Royals competing this year.
  • Tom Tango says Juan Pierre would have to defer his contract for 50 years to be worth acquiring.
  • Tracy Ringolsby of Inside The Rockies says the Rox offered Joe Beimel more than $1MM but so far he's passed.  Beimel's home run prevention trend might be challenged at Coors Field.  Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle says the A's are in on Beimel but "have not yet have substantive talks" with his agent.
  • Check out a Giants Spring Training preview from the guys behind El Lefty Malo and McCovey Chronicles.

Nomar Garciaparra, A’s Agree To Terms

By Tim Dierkes | March 3, 2009 at 2:37pm CDT

2:37pm: Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle says Nomar agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the A’s.

8:22am: According to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, Nomar Garciaparra has decided to play in 2009 and is on the verge of a one-year deal with the A’s.  He’ll spend time backing up the infield corners and DHing.

A’s GM Billy Beane has been active this winter, adding Matt Holliday, Jason Giambi, Orlando Cabrera, Russ Springer, and Mike Wuertz.  Joel Sherman of the New York Post suggests owner Lew Wolff "wanted to accelerate the timetable for winning."

Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle talked to incumbent shortstop Bobby Crosby, who would like to be traded.  Slusser says the Blue Jays aren’t "convinced that Crosby is an upgrade over Marco Scutaro."  Presumably, the A’s would have to eat salary or take back a bad contract to move Crosby (or simply release him).
