Braves Sign Ramiro Pena

By Mark Polishuk | December 13, 2012 at 4:27pm CDT

The Braves have signed infielder Ramiro Pena to a one-year, Major League contract, reports MLB.com's Mark Bowman (via Twitter).  Pena joins the recently re-signed Paul Janish as infield depth on the Braves' bench, though Bowman opines that he thinks the two men will be competing for the utility infield job.

Pena, 27, has made just 40 Major League plate appearances over the last two seasons and has a career .233/.266/.288 line in 338 career PAs with the Yankees since 2009.  New York designated Pena for assignment twice last season, and Pena also drew the interest of the Braves back in July before they acquired Janish.  Pena has played mostly shortstop and third base in his career, also getting some time at second and right field.

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | September 5, 2012 at 11:27am CDT

We’ll see many outright assignments in the next eight weeks as teams look to create 40-man roster space for call-ups and, eventually, offseason additions. Here are today’s outright assignments…

  • The Yankees outrighted infielder Ramiro Pena to the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees, according to the team’s website. The Yankees designated the 27-year-old for assignment four days ago after he hit .258/.325/.328 at Triple-A. Pena also appeared in three MLB games with the Yankees in 2012.

Quick Hits: Pena, Braves, Reds, Maier

By Mike Axisa | July 14, 2012 at 10:41pm CDT

Some late-night links as Saturday turns into Sunday…

  • Prior to acquiring Paul Janish from the Reds, the Braves were talking to the Yankees about Ramiro Pena as a shortstop backup plan according to Joel Sherman of The New York Post (on Twitter). Pena is hitting .236/.287/.297 in 271 plate appearances for New York's Triple-A affiliate this season.
  • The Reds thinking behind the Janish trade was to add pitching depth at Triple-A according to ESPN's Buster Olney (on Twitter). Cincinnati acquired right-hander Todd Redmond in the trade.
  • The Royals have outrighted Mitch Maier to Triple-A, the team announced (on Twitter). Kansas City designated the outfielder for assignment on Independence Day. Maier, 30, hit .172/.260/.313 batting line in 74 plate appearances for the Royals on the season.

Phillies Have Interest In Yankees’ Ramiro Pena

By Zachary Links | March 25, 2012 at 4:33pm CDT

With second baseman Chase Utley sidelined with no timetable to return, the Phillies plan to start Freddy Galvis and are hoping to bolster their infield depth behind him.  With that in mind, General Manager Ruben Amaro & Co. have some interest in Yankees utilityman Ramiro Pena, according to George A. King III of the New York Post.

Earlier today, Utley spoke to reporters and insisted that he'll return to action at some point this season.  The Royals' Chris Getz was one possible trade target for the Phillies but it's unlikely that he'll be dealt as he has a good chance at opening the season as Kansas City's starting second baseman.
