Ross Detwiler

Minor MLB Transactions: 8/23/18

By Steve Adams | August 24, 2018 at 1:39pm CDT

Here are the day’s minor moves from around the league…

  • The Mariners announced Friday that left-hander Ross Detwiler and infielder Zach Vincej, each of whom was designated for assignment earlier this week, have cleared waivers and been outrighted to Triple-A Tacoma. Detwiler was selected to the big league roster when Mike Leake had to be scratched due to injury. He gave the Mariners six innings of three-run ball against the Astros on short notice in what ultimately wound up to be a losing effort. The veteran southpaws has spent the summer with Seattle’s top affiliate in Tacoma and could emerge as an option with expanded rosters in September, if Seattle wants to add some additional lefties to its bullpen. As for Vincej, he’ll remain in the organization and hope to receive another look as well. He went 2-for-4 in his lone MLB appearance earlier this season and is a career .268/.336/.359 batting line in the minors while playing shortstop, second base and third base.

Mariners Designate Ross Detwiler

By Jeff Todd | August 22, 2018 at 12:14pm CDT

It was a short-lived return to the majors for Ross Detwiler, who was designated for assignment today by the Mariners, per a club announcement. He’ll be replaced on the active roster by righty Nick Rumbelow.

Seattle had called up the 32-year-old Detwiler only recently and ended up asking him to provide six innings of relief last night. While he only allowed three earned runs and helped preserve some other pen arms, the extended appearance also ensured he’d be removed from the roster since it rendered him unavailable for several days to come.

Detwiler opened the year in the indy ball ranks before landing with the Seattle organization. The southpaw worked to a 5.15 ERA with 5.8 K/9 and 3.0 BB/9 in his 71 2/3 innings at Triple-A before seeing action in the majors for his tenth season.

Mariners Select Ross Detwiler, Designate Zach Vincej

By Steve Adams | August 21, 2018 at 7:36pm CDT

The Mariners announced that they’ve selected the contract of left-hander Ross Detwiler from Triple-A Tacoma and designated infielder Zach Vincej for assignment to open space on the 40-man roster. Righty Chasen Bradford was optioned to Tacoma to open a spot for Detwiler on the active roster.

The move will give the Mariners some important length in the bullpen, as Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times tweets that Mike Leake has been scratched from tonight’s start due to illness. Reliever Nick Vincent will start in his place, so the Mariner look to have a bullpen day on their hands with Leake unable to take the ball.

Detwiler, 32, returns to the big leagues after spending the entire 2017 season at the Triple-A level between the Athletics and the Cubs. The former No. 6 overall pick was a solid back-of-the-rotation arm for the Nationals earlier in his career and had success out of the Nationals’ bullpen in 2014 as well. However, his career took a turn for the worse following a trade to the Rangers in 2015, and he was clobbered for a combined 6.73 ERA in 107 innings between Texas, Atlanta, Oakland and Cleveland from 2015-16.

Detwiler opened the 2018 season with the York Revolution of the independent Atlantic League and pitched 30 strong innings before the Seattle organization purchased his rights. In 71 1/3 frames with Tacoma, he’s posted an uninspiring 5.15 ERA with a 46-to-24 K/BB ratio. He was slated to start tonight before being scratched from his start, though, and since he’s been working in the rotation anyhow, he could enter the game in relief of Vincent and give the Mariners several innings.

Vincej, 27, went 2-for-4 in his lone game with the Mariners earlier this season but has spent the rest of the year in Tacoma. An offseason waiver claim out of the Reds organization, he’s capable of playing multiple infield positions and has batted .246/.314/.346 with six homers, 13 doubles and a pair of triples in 391 plate appearances so far in Tacoma. He’s a former 37th-round pick (Reds, 2012) who owns a career .268/.336/.359 batting line in the minors while playing shortstop, second base and third base.

Minor MLB Transactions: 6/1/18

By Steve Adams and Jeff Todd | June 1, 2018 at 10:33pm CDT

Here are the day’s minor moves from around the league…

  • Former MLB hurler Ross Detwiler is joining the Mariners organization, per an announcement from the Atlantic League. The 32-year-old had been pitching with the York Revolution, In his nine years in the majors, Detwiler has compiled 578 innings of 4.36 ERA pitching. Detwiler isn’t the only pitcher moving from the Atlantic League to Tacoma. Righty Tyler Higgins, who was with the New Britain Bees, will be doing the same. The former Marlins farmhand has never previously pitched above the Double-A level.
  • The D-backs acquired infielder Tyler Ladendorf from the Blue Jays in exchange for cash, Baseball America’s Matt Eddy reports. A second-round pick of the Twins back in 2007, Ladendorf eventually reached the Majors with the A’s but hit just .123/.149/.154 in 68 plate appearances. Ladendorf appeared in just two games with the Jays’ Triple-A affiliate and went hitless in six plate appearances, but he’s a career .256/.324/.347 hitter in parts of eight Triple-A seasons.
  • The Reds acquired right-hander Tommy Bergjans from the Phillies in exchange for cash, also per Eddy. Bergjans, 25, went from the Dodgers to the Phillies in the 2016 Carlos Ruiz/A.J. Ellis trade. He struggled to a 6.57 ERA with solid control but just 7.1 K/9 and a whopping 2.37 HR/9 in 50 1/3 innings at the Double-A level last season. He’s allowed just two runs through seven innings this season but has failed to record a strikeout in that time.

Ross Detwiler Signs With York Revolution

By Jeff Todd | March 15, 2018 at 9:21pm CDT

The Atlantic League’s York Revolution has reached agreement on a deal with lefty Ross Detwiler, per a club announcement.

Detwiler, who recently turned 32 years of age, is a nine-year MLB veteran. Over 578 total MLB frames, he owns a lifetime 4.36 ERA with 5.5 K/9 and 3.3 BB/9. Detwiler’s best season came back in 2012 with the Nationals, when he pitched to a 3.40 ERA over 164 1/3 frames.

More recently, opportunities have been tougher to come by for a pitcher who was once taken with the sixth overall pick of the 2007 draft. Detwiler was knocked around in 2016 with the Indians and A’s. And he failed to crack the majors last year for the first time since 2009, as he struggled through just 23 Triple-A innings on the season.

Ross Detwiler Opts Out Of A’s Contract, Hits Free Agency

By Mark Polishuk | May 14, 2017 at 5:44pm CDT

The A’s have released Ross Detwiler after the left-hander enacted a opt-out clause in his minor league deal with the club, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports (Twitter link).

Detwiler originally came to Oakland last July after a trade from the Indians, and the southpaw posted a 6.14 ERA, 4.7 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9 over 44 innings (seven starts in nine outings) in the green-and-gold.  Detwiler signed a minors contract with the A’s over the winter but opted out of that deal at the end of Spring Training, only to sign a new deal with the club the next week.

Pitching exclusively as a reliever at Triple-A, Detwiler had a 7.50 ERA through 12 innings, though Slusser notes that the lefty had pitched better as of late, with just a 1.17 ERA in May.  Still, it seems as if a call-up to the A’s roster wasn’t in the card, so Detwiler will now look for an opportunity elsewhere.

Best known for a productive stint as a swingman with the Nationals from 2009-14, Detwiler has struggled over the last two seasons, posting a 6.73 ERA over 107 IP with the A’s, Indians, Rangers and Braves.  Never a big strikeout pitcher (only a 5.5 career K/9), Detwiler has had increased troubles allowing walks and homers for the last two years, reducing his margin of error to zero.

A’s Ross Detwiler Opts Out Of Contract, Re-Signs

By Connor Byrne | April 1, 2017 at 5:34pm CDT

APRIL 1: Detwiler has agreed to a minor league deal to return to the A’s organization, general manager David Forst tells Slusser (Twitter link).

MARCH 26: Detwiler has opted out, tweets Slusser.

MARCH 25: With little chance to make the Athletics’ season-opening roster, left-hander Ross Detwiler is likely to opt out of his minor league contract Sunday, reports Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle. It’s unclear whether other teams will have interest in Detwiler if he becomes a free agent, per Slusser, but it seems he’d rather test the market than head to Triple-A.

Having allowed 11 earned runs in 8 1/3 spring innings, the 31-year-old Detwiler realizes he probably won’t claim a roster spot with Oakland.

“The way the last couple of games went I can guess,” Detwiler told Slusser in regards to his chances of making the A’s.

Detwiler is primed to wrap up his second stint with the A’s, who first acquired him from the Indians for cash considerations last July. The swingman went on to throw 44 innings in nine appearances (seven starts) and post a 6.14 ERA, 4.7 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9. Detwiler hasn’t been effective at the big league level since his tenure in Washington ended in 2014. The Nationals drafted Detwiler sixth overall in 2007, and he proceeded to log a 3.82 ERA with 5.4 K/9 against 2.9 BB/9 across 471 innings (132 appearances, 69 starts) and seven seasons. Dating back to 2015, he has combined for a 6.73 ERA, 5.64 K/9 and 4.63 BB/9 in 107 frames with Texas, Atlanta, Cleveland and Oakland.

AL Notes: Povse, Price, Mancini, A’s

By Jeff Todd | March 13, 2017 at 11:28pm CDT

While former first-rounder Alex Jackson got the headlines in the offseason trade that sent him from the Mariners to the Braves, Seattle is feeling good about its end of the deal, MLB.com’s Greg Johns writes. Righty Max Povse has impressed in camp, showing a bigger fastball than had been anticipated. Manager Scott Servais praised his current offerings while noting that “there’s a lot of room for growth” for Povse.

Here’s more from the American League:

  • While the general vibe around David Price’s elbow health has been positive, details have been sparse, Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal writes. Price and the Red Sox have expressed confidence, but little in the way of specifics with regard to the precise injury and what needs to be done for the lefty to get back on the mound. Further, as MacPherson explains, based largely upon an interview with sports medicine expert Dr. Paul Fadale, there’s still plenty of reason for concern.
  • The Orioles are continuing to cram power bats in the outfield, with Trey Mancini now joining the freshly re-signed Pedro Alvarez on the grass. As Jon Meoli of the Batimore Sun reports, Mancini spent the winter preparing for the possible transition, but is only now readying to do so in game action. The long-time first baseman would surely be a much more intriguing player if he were capable of playing a passable outfield, though he’ll surely be given plenty of MLB opportunity regardless. Mancini, who’ll soon turn 25, blasted three home runs in 15 plate appearances during his first taste of the bigs last year.
  • Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle takes a look at how the Athletics’ pen is shaping up. Righty Santiago Casilla was bombed in his spring debut, though he’s playing catch-up after a visa issue delayed his arrival. Lefty Sean Doolittle, meanwhile, is slated to make his first competitive appearance tomorrow. It remains to be seen whether he’ll be joined by another southpaw in the bullpen, but Slusser says that Ross Detwiler “is emerging as a strong possibility” to claim such a role.

Athletics Agree To Minor League Deal With Ross Detwiler

By Steve Adams | January 19, 2017 at 8:54am CDT

JAN. 19: FanRag’s Jon Heyman tweets that Detwiler’s deal contains a $1MM base salary upon making the Major League roster in addition to incentives.

JAN. 18: The A’s have agreed to a minor league contract with lefty Ross Detwiler, reports Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports (via Twitter). The 30-year-old will return to the A’s organization as a non-roster invite and compete for a job in Spring Training.

Detwiler, a client of CAA, spent the majority of the 2016 season with Oakland, tossing 44 innings in green and gold. However, he struggled quite a bit, logging a 6.14 earned run average with 4.7 K/9, 3.1 BB/9 and a 41.9 percent ground-ball rate. The former No. 6 overall pick was once a very solid arm for the Nationals, who originally drafted him, pitching to a 3.61 ERA over the course of 394 1/3 innings from 2010-14. A trade to the Rangers prior to the 2015 season marked the beginning of a pronounced decline for Detwiler, though, and he’s limped to a 6.73 ERA in 107 innings with the Rangers, Braves, Indians and A’s since that time.

Though Detwiler made seven starts for Oakland down the stretch last season, he seems like a notable long shot to factor into the team’s rotation mix. The A’s will trot out a group consisting of Sonny Gray, Sean Manaea and Kendall Graveman, with Andrew Triggs and Jharel Cotton as likely candidates for the final two spots. Others that will be in consideration for rotation work include Jesse Hahn, Daniel Mengden, Paul Blackburn, Frankie Montas and Dillon Overton. However, Sean Doolittle is the only lefty that’s a lock to make Oakland’s bullpen in 2017, so Detwiler could compete for a left-handed setup gig or a long relief role. In parts of nine Major League seasons, left-handed hitters have batted just .233/.313/.304 against Detwiler (including a .237/.304/.342 slash last year).

Indians Trade Ross Detwiler To A’s

By Connor Byrne | July 17, 2016 at 1:36pm CDT

The Indians have traded left-handed swingman Ross Detwiler to the Athletics for cash considerations, Paul Hoynes of cleveland.com was among those to report (Twitter link). Detwiler will head to Triple-A Nashville, tweets Ryan Lewis of Ohio.com.

Detwiler, 30, is now set to join his fourth organization over a two-year span. He logged just 4 2/3 innings with the Indians this year, surrendering three earned runs on three walks and four hits, before they designated him for assignment in April. Detwiler then accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Columbus, where he compiled a 4.60 ERA, 5.89 K/9 and 3.02 BB/9 in 12 starts.

Previously, Detwiler racked up 58 1/3 frames for the Rangers and Braves last season, though he posted an unsightly ERA (7.25) and a similarly ugly walk rate (5.55 per nine). All told, Detwiler has thrown 534 big league innings with four different teams and recorded a 4.21 ERA, 5.54 K/9, 3.27 BB/9 and 46.3 percent ground-ball rate. Those numbers are respectable on the whole, and Detwiler’s only two years removed from putting up a 4.00 ERA over 63 innings, but it’s fair to say he hasn’t lived up to his draft stock since the Nationals selected him sixth overall in 2006.

Detwiler, who’s scheduled to become a free agent at season’s end, will try to eventually work his way back to the majors with the Oakland organization. He’ll face an uphill climb, though, as he’s not on the Athletics’ 40-man roster. At the major league level, the A’s currently have two lefties apiece in their rotation and bullpen, as their depth chart shows.
