Red Sox Roster Moves

By TC Zencka | March 9, 2021 at 6:22pm CDT

The Red Sox were one of a number of teams to make their first round of roster cuts today. Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom announced the assignment of 12 players to minor league camp.

There are unlikely to be many surprises from this early round of cuts. For Boston, catchers Roldani Baldwin and Austin Rei, and pitchers Seth Blair, Matt Carasiti, Raynel Espinal, Durbin Feltman, Franklin German, Zac Grotz, Kaleb Ort, Andrew Politi, Thaddeus Ward, and Josh Winckowski were re-assigned to minor league camp. No one from this group was on their 40-man roster.

You might recognize Winckowski, who’s been quite the traveler this winter. He went from the Blue Jays to the Mets as part of the Steven Matz trade. Two weeks later, he found himself in Boston as part of the return for Andrew Benintendi (by way of the Royals and Khalil Lee). The 22-year-old has yet to play a pro game above High-A. Though he may eventually work his way into a swingman role, Fangraphs’ Eric Longenhagen suggests he’s bound for a relief role unless he can develop a more consistent third offering.

German may also ring a few bells, as he came to the Red Sox from the Yankees as the contract tax for Adam Ottavino. Fangraphs has German as the 25th-ranked prospect in Boston’s system. Like Winckowski, however, German has yet to appear above High-A. Fangraphs also lists relievers Feltman and Politi among Boston’s top 47 prospects.

Red Sox Release John Andreoli, Add Seth Blair To Player Pool

By Steve Adams | August 7, 2020 at 12:19pm CDT

The Red Sox have released outfielder John Andreoli in order to open a spot in their 60-man player pool for right-hander Seth Blair, per a team announcement. Blair will join the club’s alternate training site.

Andreoli, 30, is a Worcester native with 26 games and 67 plate appearance of big league experience under his belt. That all came back in 2018, when he hit .230/.284/.262 in a small sample with the Mariners and Orioles. Lack of big league experience aside, Andreoli is a solid depth piece for big league clubs given a career .262/.375/.416 slash in nearly 2500 Triple-A plate appearances. He’s also logged more than 2000 minor league innings at all three outfield positions and racked up 259 minor league stolen bases. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see him latch on with a club hurting for outfield depth.

Blair, meanwhile, is something of a remarkable story. The 31-year-old was selected by the Cardinals with the No. 46 overall pick of the 2010 draft and looked to have washed out of baseball after an ugly season in 2014. Blair didn’t throw a professional pitch from 2015-18 but was given a chance at a comeback by the Padres organization in 2019. He spent the year with San Diego’s Class-A Advanced affiliate, and while his 4.11 ERA doesn’t stand out as a particularly impressive mark, Blair also notched an impressive 47-to-14 K/BB ratio in 35 frames. Now that he’s in Boston’s player pool, he’s closer to an improbable big league debut than he was at any point in 2019.

Cardinals Sign Seth Blair

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 30, 2010 at 7:14pm CDT

The Cardinals formally announced the signing of supplementary first rounder Seth Blair, according to MLB.com's Matthew Leach (via Twitter). The Cards selected the 21-year-old right-hander 46th overall in last month's draft. Three years ago, the A's selected Blair in the 47th round, but he attended Arizona State instead.

The Cardinals signed Blair for $751,500, according to Baseball America's Jim Callis.  That matches MLB's slot recommendation.

Earlier in the week, we heard that the Cards were close to finalizing an agreement with Blair, so tonight's news is no surprise. Click here for the complete list of top picks to sign.

Cardinals Rumors: Pitching, Blair, Lohse

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 27, 2010 at 7:05pm CDT

The Cardinals lead the Reds by a game, but they are looking to make moves between now and Saturday’s trade deadline. Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch spoke to Cardinals GM John Mozeliak and turned up these rumors:

  • Mozeliak says the Cards don’t want a “short-term band-aid” for the infield.
  • The Cards still have interest in adding a “depth starting pitcher,” Mozeliak said. Jake Westbrook, Livan Hernandez and Dave Bush fit that description.
  • The possibility that Kyle Lohse might return to the rotation won’t affect the Cards’ approach at the deadline.
  • The Cardinals are close to a deal with supplemental rounder Seth Blair and expect to sign the pitcher soon.
  • Intra-divisional deals aren’t impossible, but do seem “trickier” in Mozeliak’s estimation.
