Red Sox Claim Taylor Buchholz

By Tim Dierkes | November 15, 2010 at 1:14pm CDT

The Red Sox claimed reliever Taylor Buchholz off waivers from the Blue Jays, the team announced today.  Buchholz had been designated for assignment by the Rockies in September and claimed by Toronto.

Buchholz, 29, tossed 21 1/3 innings in the minors this year and another 12 in the bigs.  He had Tommy John surgery in June of '09 after an excellent '08 season for Colorado.  He earned $1.055MM in each of the last two seasons and will be arbitration eligible again this winter.  The Red Sox will have the opportunity to retain Buchholz for the 2012 season if he pitches well next year.

The claim caused the Blue Jays to fall behind the Athletics for the honor of having the most arbitration eligible players – the A's lead with 11 after claiming Edwin Encarnacion.

Blue Jays Claim Taylor Buchholz

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | September 9, 2010 at 4:30pm CDT

The Blue Jays claimed reliever Taylor Buchholz off of waivers from the Rockies. When the Rockies designated the 28-year-old right-hander for assignment this Tuesday it seemed possible that a team would make a claim, despite Buchholz's recent injuries.

Buchholz missed all of last year and much of this year with Tommy John surgery. He pitched well in a short July stint, but soon hit the DL again because of back stiffness. Buchholz posted a 2.17 ERA with 7.6 K/9, and 2.4 BB/9 in 2008, so he has proven he can be an effective major league reliever.

Rockies Designate Taylor Buchholz For Assignment

By Mike Axisa | September 7, 2010 at 5:28pm CDT

The Rockies have designated righthander Taylor Buchholz for assignment according to Troy Renck of The Denver Post (via Twitter). The move frees up a 40-man roster spot for catcher Paul Phillips.

Buchholz, 28, missed the entire 2009 season and most of 2010 due to Tommy John surgery. He returned in July to throw ten reasonably effective innings (4.50 ERA, 8.1 K/9) before landing on the disabled list with back stiffness. As Renck explains in a second tweet, Buchholz can choose to become a free agent if he goes unclaimed on waivers, however he would forfeit the $163K left on his contract by doing so.

Acquired from the Astros in the Jason Jennings trade four years ago, Buchholz pitched to a 2.17 ERA, 7.6 K/9, and 2.4 BB/9 in 66.1 innings of relief in 2008 before his elbow gave out. Given the dearth of quality relievers and the fact that Buchholz is under team control for another two seasons, there's a chance someone will roll the dice and place a claim.

Rockies Avoid Arb With Barmes, Buchholz, De La Rosa

By Tim Dierkes | January 15, 2010 at 8:13am CDT

FRIDAY, 8:13am: Renck reports that the Rockies avoided arbitration and agreed to pay De La Rosa $5.6MM this season. If he pitches 220 innings, De La Rosa can earn $300K in incentives.

THURSDAY, 5:06pm: Renck is now reporting that the Rockies are close to avoiding arbitration with a third player, lefty Jorge De La Rosa. It would be a one-year deal worth $5.6MM.

2:05pm: The Rockies resolved two of their seven arbitration situations today, according to Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post.  Renck says they agreed to one-year deals with second baseman Clint Barmes and reliever Taylor Buchholz, though terms are not yet available.

Both players are entering their second arbitration years.  Barmes earned $1.625MM in '09, while Buchholz made $1.055MM.
