Minor Moves: Wade, Thomas, Diamond

By Tim Dierkes | June 15, 2011 at 5:15pm CDT

Minor moves for Wednesday…

  • The Yankees have signed right-hander Cory Wade to a Major League contract and called him up to the Major League roster, reports MLB.com's Bryan Hoch.  Wade signed a minor league deal with New York on Monday.  To make room, Hoch reports that Rafael Soriano was moved to the 60-day DL and Kevin Whelan was optioned to Triple-A.
  • The Rangers have released catcher Michael Thomas, tweets Matt Eddy of Baseball America.  Thomas was the player to be named later in the Jarrod Saltalamacchia trade last July.  Eddy notes the Rangers considered converting Thomas to pitching.
  • The Cubs released righty Thomas Diamond from their Triple-A club, tweets Bruce Miles of the Daily Herald.  He'd been outrighted in May to open a spot on the 40-man roster for Doug Davis.
  • The Diamondbacks purchased the contract of righty reliever Jeff Bennett from the Lancaster Barnstormers.  It appears that Bennett will join Arizona's Triple-A club.  The 31-year-old last pitched in the Majors with the Rays in '09.

Cubs Outright Thomas Diamond

By Zachary Links | May 14, 2011 at 3:18pm CDT

The Cubs have outrighted Thomas Diamond from their 40-man roster, according to Carrie Muskat of MLB.com (via Twitter).  The move will allow the club to add Doug Davis to the Cubs' 40-man roster in time to start tonight against the Giants.

In parts of three seasons at the Triple-A level, Diamond owns a 4.62 ERA with 8.4 K/9 and 4.6 BB/9.  The 28-year-old also made 13 relief appearances and three starts for the Cubs last season, posting a 6.83 ERA with 11.2 K/9 and 5.6 BB/9.

Thomas Diamond Designated For Assignment

By Luke Adams 2 | September 21, 2009 at 7:01pm CDT

According to an MLB.com press release, the Chicago Cubs have designated right-hander Thomas Diamond for assignment.

The Cubs claimed Diamond, a 2004 first round pick, off waivers from Texas earlier this month, after he compiled a 4.20 ERA in Double-A and Triple-A. He did not make an appearance for Chicago, who designated him for assignment to make room on the active roster for outfielder Tyler Colvin.

Cubs Acquire Thomas Diamond

By Tim Dierkes | September 4, 2009 at 1:32pm CDT

1:32pm: The Cubs confirmed the acquisition via a press release.  Diamond was simply claimed off waivers from the Rangers.  He'll head to Triple A Iowa.

12:23pm: The Cubs acquired righty Thomas Diamond from the Rangers, MLBTR has learned.  Diamond, the 10th overall pick in the 2004 draft, was designated for assignment Tuesday by Texas.  He had Tommy John surgery in '07, and has struggled with his control since.  Diamond has worked as a reliever most of this year.

Cubs assistant GM Randy Bush coached Diamond at the University of New Orleans, by the way.

Odds & Ends: Diamond, Penny, Pelekoudas

By Tim Dierkes | September 1, 2009 at 1:48pm CDT

Links for Tuesday…

  • Chat today, 2pm CST.
  • The Rangers designated pitcher Thomas Diamond for assignment, according to MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan.  Diamond was the 10th overall pick in the 2004 draft.  He was considered the #52 prospect in the game by Baseball America in '05, but he had Tommy John surgery in '07 and dealt with shoulder soreness this year.
  • ESPN's Buster Olney says the Angels were in on Brad Penny, with a bullpen role in mind.
  • Stephen Strasburg has a few things to learn about dealing with media attention, says John Feinstein of the Washington Post.
  • Mariners Associate GM Lee Pelekoudas has resigned to pursue other career opportunities, according to a team press release.  Pelekoudas was the Ms' interim GM before Jack Zduriencik was hired.  He spent 30 years in the organization.
  • USA Today's Paul White writes about the stigma of a college degree for ballplayers.
  • Sam Mellinger of the Kansas City Star suggests newly-extended GM Dayton Moore, and not the Glass family, is accountable for the Royals' future performance.
  • Reliever Luis Ayala, recently designated for assignment by the Marlins after pitching badly, was upset by the team's "lack of respect" (Juan C. Rodriguez of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reporting).  Ayala earned $1.3MM for his 5.63 ERA this year in 40 innings.

Beckett and Lowell for Blalock

By Tim Dierkes | November 19, 2005 at 11:14am CDT

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the huge blockbuster that might go down today.  Joe Capozzi of the Palm Beach Post told us late last night:

"In what could be the first step of a major housecleaning in Florida, the Marlins and Rangers are close to completing a trade that would send Beckett and Lowell to Texas for third baseman Hank Blalock and a top pitching prospect, two baseball sources said Friday night.

The Marlins are asking for either left-hander John Danks, Texas’ first-round pick in 2003, or right-hander Thomas Diamond, the team’s first-round pick in 2004."

The article goes on to say that the deal could fall apart if Texas refuses to include either pitching prospect.  My guess is that the Marlins are demanding Diamond, who has a higher ceiling than Danks and could project as a #2 starter.

Both pitchers had lackluster years after being bumped up to Double A.

This may signal a widespread salary dump for the Marlins.  We’ve all heard the rumors around Carlos Delgado, Paul Lo Duca, and Juan Pierre.  One name I haven’t heard much is Luis Castillo.  You have to figure Castillo is on the market as well with a weak 2B free agent class.
