Read The Transcript Of Our Chat With MLB Pitcher Tyler Danish

What were you doing when you were 21 years old? I can tell you what Tyler Danish was doing…making his big league debut for the White Sox against the Royals in front of 31,183 fans at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago, with Lorenzo Cain stepping into the box.

It was a quick rise to the Majors for Danish, who the White Sox drafted 55th overall in 2013 out of Durant High School in Plant City, Florida after a dominant senior season in which he was unscored upon. Danish’s dominance continued into the minors in 2014, and by 2015 he was the Southern League’s youngest starter.

To date, Danish has only had a taste of the Majors, totaling 13 innings for the White Sox from 2016-18. Even in that brief time, he added career highlights such as five shutout innings against the Tigers in ’17, and strikeouts of star players like Francisco Lindor and Victor Martinez.

In December 2018, Danish signed a minor league deal with the Mariners. After pitching six Triple-A games for the Mariners in ’19, he spent the rest of the year and 2020 pitching independent ball. In 2021, Danish worked out of the bullpen in the minors as part of the Angels organization, mostly in Triple-A. In 60 1/3 innings at that level, Danish punched out 25.8% of batters and walked just 5.8%. He’s still only 27 years old, and expects to sign with an MLB team within the next week or so.

Mariners Release Tyler Danish

The Mariners have released right-hander Tyler Danish from his minor league contract, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports (via Twitter). He’d been in his first year with the organization.

Danish, 24, was the White Sox’ second-round pick back in the 2013 draft and was long considered to be one of the more promising arms in Chicago’s system. However, his results as a starter continually deteriorated as he rose through the minors, and the White Sox eventually moved him into a bullpen role last year. Danish found some success as a reliever, pitching to a 3.01 ERA with 6.7 K/9, 3.5 BB/9, 0.75 HR/9 and a 50.2 percent grounder rate in 71 1/3 innings last season.

Solid bottom-line results notwithstanding, the Sox outrighted Danish off the 40-man roster late in the 2018 campaign, and he elected free agency following the season. The Mariners added him on a minor league deal in January, hoping that he’d be able to build on last year’s success, but the season has been catastrophic for Danish. In 15 2/3 innings, he’s surrendered 44 hits and walked nine batters en route to a 21.26 ERA. Danish wasn’t placed on the injured list at any point, so it seems as though he’s healthy. While his early struggles are surely cause for some degree of alarm, he’s still only a few months removed from a solid showing in Triple-A and could land another minor league deal elsewhere in search of a fresh start.

Mariners Sign Tyler Danish To Minor League Deal

The Mariners have signed right-hander Tyler Danish to a minor league contract, per Jon Heyman of Fancred.

The 24-year-old Danish had been on the market since October, a month after the White Sox outrighted him. Chicago’s decision to cut Danish ended a relationship that began in 2013, when the club selected him in the second round of the draft. Danish ranked as one of the White Sox’s 10 best prospects at Baseball America through 2015, as he prevented runs at a solid rate at the lower levels of the minors. However, Danish has largely struggled in the upper minors and the majors, evidenced by a 4.47 ERA in 217 1/3 innings in Double-A and a 4.78 ERA across 239 1/3 Triple-A frames. He also tossed 13 innings as a member of the White Sox, with whom he surrendered seven earned runs on 17 hits and totaled more walks (13) than strikeouts (11).

Danish, to his credit, is coming off his best season in Triple-A ball. Working almost exclusively as a reliever (33 appearances, two starts), he posted a 3.01 ERA and a 50.2 percent groundball rate across 71 2/3 innings. At the same time, though, Danish only logged 6.66 K/9 against 3.52 BB/9, continuing a trend of unspectacular strikeout and walk numbers in the pros. Indeed, Danish has averaged fewer than six strikeouts per nine and upward of three walks a game in both Double-A and Triple-A.

Players Electing Free Agency

Quite a few players will hit the open market this fall, and they’ll do so by way of varying mechanisms. The end of the regular season triggered a recent wave of free agents, consisting of a certain subset of players — namely, those who were outrighted from 40-man rosters during the season and accepted minor-league assignments at that time despite having the right to elect free agency. Players in that situation are entitled instead to hit the open market at season’s end, if they were not added back to the 40-man roster in the meantime.

White Sox Outright Tyler Danish

The White Sox outrighted right-hander Tyler Danish to Triple-A Charlotte, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports (Twitter link).  This is the second time that Danish has been outrighted, as he was also removed from Chicago’s 40-man roster last November.

A second-rounder for the Sox in the 2013 draft, Danish has seen only sparing big league action in each of the last three seasons, with a career total of 13 innings over 11 games (one of them a start).  In total, the right-hander has a 4.85 ERA and more walks (13) than strikeouts (11) over his brief time as a big leaguer.

Danish has also posted middling numbers as a starter at the Double-A and Triple-A levels, though he showed some improvement this season pitching largely as a reliever in Charlotte, with a 3.01 ERA over 71 2/3 IP and 33 total appearances, 31 of which came out of the bullpen.  Danish doesn’t miss many bats (6.0 K/9 in his minor league career), though he has been able to generate grounders, as his 50.2% ground-ball rate for Charlotte this season actually represents his lowest grounder rate over his six minor league campaigns.

White Sox Designate Chris Volstad For Assignment

The White Sox announced Friday that they’ve designated right-hander Chris Volstad for assignment. His spot on the 25- and 40-man rosters will go to right-hander Tyler Danish, whose contract has been selected from Triple-A Charlotte. The ChiSox also called up right-handed reliever Thyago Vieira from Charlotte to join the big league bullpen.

Volstad, 31, has soaked up 47 1/3 innings for an ugly Chicago pitching staff so far in 2018, though he’s posted an ungainly 6.27 ERA with 5.5 K/9 against 2.3 BB/9 in that time. Those 47 1/3 frames are the most he’s totaled in a big league season since 2012; in fact, it’s a greater total than the combined number of MLB innings Volstad threw from 2013-17. The Sox have a week to trade him or run him through outright waivers, and it stands to reason that there’s a good chance he’ll clear and have the opportunity to remain in the organization at Triple-A.

Danish, 23, was one of Chicago’s better pitching prospects for a few years but cleared waivers and was removed from the 40-man roster last offseason. He’s had a nice run in Charlotte this season, though, notching a 3.06 ERA with 6.4 K/9, 3.6 BB/9 and a 51.1 percent ground-ball rate in 64 2/3 innings of work. All but two of Danish’s 29 appearances have come in relief, so it seems the organization will see how the former starter fares out of the bullpen moving forward.

As for Vieira, the 25-year-old flamethrower has had his struggles in Charlotte this year — his first in the organization. Chicago picked him up in a trade that sent international bonus considerations to the Mariners this past offseason, and while he’s averaged a heart 11 strikeouts per nine innings pitched in 2018, he’s also averaged 5.3 walks in that same span. Vieira averaged 98.7 mph on his fastball in last year’s brief MLB debut with the Mariners, and he’ll bring the ability to miss plenty of bats to the table on the South Side, even if control could prove to be an ongoing issue.

White Sox Outright Chris Beck, Tyler Danish

The White Sox announced today that right-handers Chris Beck and Tyler Danish have cleared waivers and been assigned outright to Triple-A Charlotte, thus removing them from the 40-man roster. The moves will help pave the way for Chicago’s newest slate of 40-man roster additions, which includes minor league outfielders Eloy Jimenez, Luis Alexander Basabe and Micker Adolfo; minor league lefty Ian Clarkin; and minor league first baseman Casey Gillaspie, per the team’s announcement.

Beck, 27, soaked up 64 2/3 innings out of the White Sox’ bullpen in 2017 but struggled to a 6.40 ERA with an unsightly 42-to-34 K/BB ratio along the way. The 2012 second-rounder averaged nearly 95 mph on his heater in the process but proved extremely susceptible to home runs (2.23 HR/9). Beck does have a more palatable 3.72 ERA in 162 frames at the Triple-A level, though he’s averaged just 6.9 K/9 there in spite of his solid velocity.

Danish, meanwhile, has just 6 2/3 minor league innings under his belt — all coming in the past two seasons. Also a former second-round pick (2013), the 23-year-old was considered to be one of the Sox’ most promising minor league arms in the low minors before stalling in the upper levels. Danish logged a 5.47 ERA with just 4.6 K/9 against 3.1 BB/9 in Triple-A this past season and posted ERA marks in the mid- to upper-4.00s at Double-A in Triple-A from 2015-16.

With the exception of Adolfo, each of the new 40-man additions was acquired by the White Sox within the past 12 months on the trade market. Jimenez (acquired in the Jose Quintana swap) is considered among the top five to 10 prospects in all of baseball. Adolfo, Basabe (Chris Sale trade), Clarkin (Todd Frazier/David Robertson/Tommy Kahnle trade) and Gillaspie (Dan Jennings trade) are not quite as highly regarded but are all among Chicago’s top 30 overall prospects, per MLB.com.
