Orioles Make Offer To Will Ohman

By Tim Dierkes | January 27, 2010 at 9:41am CDT

The Orioles offered a minor league deal to lefty reliever Will Ohman, reports Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun.  Ohman will throw for the O's and other clubs this week.  Ohman, 32, had a lost 2009 season after signing with the Dodgers on March 30th.  Shoulder problems led to September surgery.  When he's right, Ohman can shut down lefties.  Connolly adds that the Orioles are still in talks with southpaw Mark Hendrickson.

Connolly also notes that Miguel Tejada's one-year, $6MM deal to return to Baltimore is official.  Connolly speculates that reliever Dennis Sarfate could be designated for assignment to make room for Tejada.  You may recall that Sarfate came to the Orioles from the Astros in the December '07 Tejada trade.

Dodgers Make No Arb Offers To Free Agents

By Tim Dierkes | December 1, 2009 at 3:13pm CDT

The Dodgers aren't offering arbitration to any of their free agents, team spokesman Josh Rawitch told Dylan Hernandez of the L.A. Times.  They've got Type As with Orlando Hudson and Randy Wolf, and Type Bs with Guillermo Mota, Jon Garland, Ronnie Belliard, Vicente Padilla, and Will Ohman.

Wolf in particular seemed a lock to receive an offer.  It's difficult to understand why the Dodgers chose not to; Jon Weisman of Dodgers Thoughts is depressed.  Oddly enough, Wolf has avoided an arb offer for two years running despite being worthy both times.  Surely he's not complaining; he's now more attractive to other teams.  Ditto for Hudson.

Odds & Ends: Dodgers, Phillies, Nationals

By Howard Megdal | November 9, 2009 at 9:51pm CDT

As the immortal Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe puts it, "Standing around an airport hotel lobby at night just in case Scott Boras walks by was not covered in journalism school." Meanwhile, you get to keep up with the latest rumors in the comfort of your own home!

  • As expected, the Dodgers declined their $2.2MM option on Will Ohman.
  • Randy Miller of the Bucks County Courier Times says that the Phillies "are expected to try and sign free agent Mark DeRosa." DeRosa went to University of Pennsylvania, so this would be a homecoming.
  • Nationals' interim manager Jim Riggleman believes a decision on who will be the 2010 skipper in Washington could come as early as this week.
  • Carl Pavano is unlikely to receive an overwhelming offer from the Twins during their exclusive signing window, says Joe Christensen of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

Dodgers Decline Option On Will Ohman

By Mike Axisa | October 17, 2009 at 9:09am CDT

The offseason hasn't even started yet for the Dodgers, but they've already made their first personnel move. According to MLB.com's Ken Gurnick, the team has declined a $2.2MM option for lefty reliever Will Ohman, instead paying him a $200K buyout. Ohman was one of the last free agents to sign last offseason, landing with LA at the end of Spring Training.

Ohman posted a 5.84 ERA in 12.1 IP for the Dodgers, and lefties tattooed him for a .296/.406/.889 batting line. His season ended in late May when he was placed on the disabled list with soreness in the acromioclavicular joint in his shoulder, and he later strained the flexor tendon in his elbow while rehabbing. Ohman had surgery on the shoulder joint in late September and is expected to be ready for Spring Training.

Dodgers, Will Ohman Agree To Terms

By Tim Dierkes | March 30, 2009 at 7:30pm CDT

7:30pm: Diamond Leung has the terms of the minor league deal. Ohman makes at least $1.35MM if he's on the team and he could add $200K to that total based on incentives. The Dodgers have the option of paying him $2MM next year or buying him out for $200K. Tony Jackson of the LA Daily News reports that the club option is for $2.2MM.

Ohman can also opt out of the deal if he's not called up by April 14th.

6:49pm: According to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports it's a one year minor league deal. MLB.com's Ken Gurnick adds that there's an option for a second year. He doesn't say whether Ohman controls the option or the Dodgers do, but it's presumably under the team's control.

6:20pm: According to Bill Shaikin of the L.A. Times, the Dodgers agreed to terms with lefty reliever Will Ohman.  Terms are not known yet, but Dylan Hernandez wrote this morning that the Dodgers offered around $1MM.

With the season starting in a week, hopefully Ohman will be ready.  He worked out for the Dodgers yesterday and Joe Torre seemed unimpressed.  Last year he did a nice job shutting down lefty hitters.

Dodgers Make Offer To Will Ohman

By Tim Dierkes | March 30, 2009 at 8:18am CDT

Dylan Hernandez of the L.A. Times has the latest on free agent lefty Will Ohman, who auditioned for the Dodgers yesterday.  Hernandez says the Dodgers offered Ohman about $1MM, half of his reported asking price.  They're waiting to hear back.  Joe Beimel managed to snag $2MM from Washington on March 18th.

Hernandez says the Dodgers need Ohman as much as he needs them, as they're considering Erick Threets and Brian Mazone for the situational lefty role.

Dodgers Talking With Ohman?

By Steve Adams | March 29, 2009 at 4:22pm CDT

4:22pm: Dylan Hernandez of the LA Times writes that Torre wasn't sure Ohman was as ready as he's been advertising. Ohman maintains that he's been working hard with the intention of being ready for Opening Day, and that he's reached that point. Torre disagreed:

Of Ohman's command when he pitched to minor leaguers in front of the Dodgers' brain trust, Torre said, "You can see he hasn't been pitched in games."

1:16pm: On his blog at MLB.com, Ken Gurnick writes that the Dodgers gave free-agent lefty Will Ohman a tryout this morning. Joe Torre joined nearly the entire Dodger front office in attendance.

Ohman, 31, has held opposing lefties to just a .197 batting average for his career. He's been holding out for quite some time now, despite interest from several teams. Most recently we've heard that the Pirates have been increasing their interest, and that the Phillies were out as a result of Ohman's $2MM asking price.

Bill Shaikin of the LA Times cites Dylan Hernandez (also of the Times), saying that following the tryout, Ohman and his agent headed into a meeting with Dodgers General Manager Ned Colletti.

The Remaining Free Agents: Who’s Left?

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | March 28, 2009 at 12:43pm CDT

With little more than a week remaining before the regular season begins let's check the list of unsigned free agents..

  • Pedro Martinez is the biggest name out there.  The Dodgers don't like  his asking price of $5MM and Omar Minaya says Pedro's not coming back to the Mets.
  • Orlando Hernandez, Mark Mulder and Will Ohman are still on the market.
  • And don't forget about Paul Byrd and Ben Sheets, who could return midseason.
  • Richie Sexson, Mark Grudzielanek and Ray Durham are some of the more interesting free agent infielders
  • Dave Roberts and Jim Edmonds could offer outfield depth, but haven't attracted a lot of reported interest.
  • Luis Gonzalez is on the market too. Could he return to the Marlins? He could return to the D'Backs if he retires as a player.

Pirates Ramp Up Interest In Ohman

By Tim Dierkes | March 26, 2009 at 9:24pm CDT

According to Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Pirates have ramped up their interest in free agent lefty Will Ohman.  The Bucs made an offer Saturday for one year plus an option, and Ohman's agent countered yesterday. Ohman's still looking for a $2MM salary.  Dialogue is ongoing with the Pirates.

Kovacevic names a slew of other teams in on Ohman: the Giants, Dodgers, Marlins, Nationals, and Indians.  He says the Nats and Indians are new to the mix.

My opinion – it'd be odd to see the Nationals sign Ohman after Joe Beimel, but they could be trying to build up a trade surplus.  The Pirates would have one given the presence of John Grabow.

Rosenthal On Melky, Matthews, Pedro, Ohman

By Tim Dierkes | March 25, 2009 at 3:10pm CDT

As usual, good stuff from Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports…

  • Rosenthal says the Yankees are open to moving Melky Cabrera, and opines that the White Sox would be a perfect fit.  Trading Cabrera would open up the Yankees' outfield picture for sure, but leave them shakier in center with Brett Gardner and Nick Swisher.  Rosenthal also says the White Sox have expressed some interest in a deal to acquire Gary Matthews Jr., assuming the Angels pay "the vast majority of the $33MM remaining on the final three years of his contract."
  • Pedro Martinez reached out to the Royals before they signed Sidney Ponson, but KC couldn't afford him.  Would Pedro have been a better signing than Horacio Ramirez and Willie Bloomquist?  Martinez's friends are telling him his $5MM asking price is unrealistic.  Rosenthal says that if Pedro drops it down to $1-2MM, he can probably get the Dodgers and other teams involved.
  • The Marlins are looking for relief help.  They like Will Ohman but not his $2MM asking price.
  • The A's thought they were close to a $1.7MM deal for Joe Beimel before he went to the Nats for $300K more.
  • Catcher Ronny Paulino, acquired by the Phillies from the Pirates in December, is available.  Rosenthal considers the Marlins a possible fit.
