Scott Hairston Claimed On Waivers

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 27, 2012 at 5:10pm CDT

5:10pm: Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports hears that the winning team made the claim as a block, and Hairston is not likely to be traded (Twitter link).

4:41pm: Mets outfielder Scott Hairston has been claimed on waivers by an unknown team, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports (all Twitter links). The Dodgers did not win the claim and neither did the Giants, Heyman writes.

The Mets placed Hairston and Andres Torres on waivers over the weekend. They now have two days to select one of three options. They can let Hairston (and his contract) go to the claiming team, they can complete a trade with the claiming team, or they can pull him back off of waivers. National League teams had waiver priority on Hairston, beginning at the bottom of the standings.

Hairston, 32, earns $1.1MM this year — just $200K between now and the end of the season. He has a .272/.312/.512 batting line this year and a history of hitting left-handed pitching well.

Maybe the Dodgers claimed him? Even though they have no place to play him and might get stuck with his salary? Yeah, right. Maybe if LA’s ownership were loony risk takers who threw money around like sailors in a strip club.

    Oh… I see.

Do the Dodgers have like 75 players on their 40 man roster now?

You bet. They’re building a second story on the dugout, and the bullpen is now out in the reserved parking lot.

Cool. The bullpen won’t need to pitch until bottom of the 3rd when everyone else arrives.

With the bullpen out in the parking lot maybe that will beef up security and get those gangs under control. Worst parking lot in sports!

I’m betting somebody put in a claim to keep him out of San Francisco. He would be a good pick up for the Giants, but they already hit lefties pretty well.

Most likely the Tigers. They pushed hard to acquire him at the trade deadline. It won’t be the Dodgers. Most likely not Philly.

It wouldn’t get that far. The Giants are desperate for a left fielder and NL has first dibs.

Not sure he’d get to the AL in the waiver process given how many NL clubs might have a use for the guy.

I really don’t like the concept of trade waivers. A team who wants a player gets blocked by a lower divisional team, who doesn’t have a need for the player. But whats unfortunate is that the team putting the player on waivers doesn’t get moved, and that teams loses out on all other potential suitors because of a different division rivalry.

I think that the team that’s awarded the claim should be forced to pay a fee (50 or 100K, whatever the price) for putting in the claim. If they reach a deal, or give the player away for free, the money gets refunded, but if they pass on the waiver then the money goes to the players original team. That way, there’s more incentive to think about putting in a claim and the original team gets a benefit too.

In order to prevent teams from putting everyone on waivers in order to cash in, they have to have a certain limit of players, as well as players who must have a minimum amount of years experience. I know the specifics are questionable, but nonetheless, this is 1 bug in the CBA that I think needs fixing

You’re sort of right the thing is a team can claim a player to
Block said player from going to another team. It’s the team that puts the player on waivers decision to try and work a trade, let the claiming team
      Just have said player or
Pull him back. The claiming team cannot claim a player and then decide they want nothing to do with him. They either trade for him or take him as a straight claim (see Alex rios to the whitesox)

“I think that the team that’s awarded the claim should be forced to pay a fee”

Nice idea on 1st thought.. then u realize it would on affect the poor mouthing teams that who don’t really have the money and are in the PO rarely (Pittsburgh) that lots of us want to see fight for a spot and teams like the NYY that flush 5k (just throwing it out there) down to toilet everyday..

So 5k to different teams is 100% different.

That’s why they should do their business BEFORE the trade deadline, so this kind of stuff DOESN’T happen.

but why would they do it as a block, they could use offense and he only makes 200k. All the teams below the Pirates are way out of it and I guess could only do it to spite someone since he is a free agent at the end of the year

It sure would be great if the Pittsburgh Pirates were the claiming team. He may not be enough of a bat that they sorely need, but he might offer an alternative to their ever-growing list of hitters sitting close to the Mendoza line.

if your the Pirates and your this close I think you have to try to make playoffs. And if you look at next year the Dodgers and Giants will be strong. Cardinals will have their other ace back, Reds are still there – Pirates ain’t making post season in 2013

Scott Hairston. Scott Hairston is a must for The Giants.

I know it has been said before, but I think that the Diamondbacks were the team claiming Scott Hairston; they are the only team that can legitimately claim to have done this as a block. The Phillies don’t make sense, and the Pirates don’t make sense as a blocking team.

If the Dodgers DID put a claim in him, it was just to block SF. They gets none.

I could see the D•Backs being the team. They have a need for him, they don’t need Ryan wheeler on the bench instead of Hairston.
