Odds And Ends: Chapman, Nats, Buehrle

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 13, 2009 at 2:43pm CDT

More links for the afternoon…

  • ESPN.com's Buster Olney believes the Phillies should let the Blue Jays take three A prospects, one B prospect and one C prospect for Roy Halladay.
  • The Nationals point to the positives in this letter to their fans.
  • Cuban defector Aroldis Chapman chose an agent, according to the AP (via ESPN).
  • As Mike Viera of the Washington Post notes, Mike Rizzo's goals for the 2009 Nationals aren't based on win totals.
  • Mark Buehrle told Derrick Goold that he'd like to wear a Cardinals jersey for one day.
  • And there are some radio appearances to let you know about. I'll be on 1570 The Score at 4:05 CST, 830 KLAA in LA at 6:05 CST and FirstInning.com at 7:05 CST.
  • And check out my thoughts on Roy Halladay over at NESN.com.

Roy Halladay Rumors: Monday

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 13, 2009 at 1:01pm CDT

Roy Halladay spoke with reporters about the possibility of getting traded. Here's some of what he said:

  • Ideally, Halladay would stay in Toronto and win there, says WEEI.com's Alex Speier.
  • It's worth repeating that Halladay doesn't have a list of teams to which he would accept trades.
  • He guesses there's a 50-50 chance he's traded.
  • At some point in a player's career it's time to win, and Halladay says winning is the most important thing for him now.
  • Newsday's Ken Davidoff says Halladay wouldn't mind pitching in the National League.
  • Halladay would also consider a trade to the Yankees, according to Davidoff.
  • Jayson Werth says it's time to trade away minor leaguers if it means acquiring Halladay, according to MLB.com's Todd Zolecki.

Odds And Ends: Nats, Bruce, Padres, Halladay

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 13, 2009 at 11:24am CDT

Congrats to All-Star Game starters Roy Halladay and Tim Lincecum. What a matchup. Here are some more links to look through…

  • Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports says the Nationals "will remain an embarrassment" unless they give Mike Rizzo and Stan Kasten more power.
  • Jay Bruce will miss 6-8 weeks, according to Brian Kollars of the Dayton Daily News, but the young outfielder didn't suffer any ligament or tendon damage in his right wrist.
  • One talent evaluator told Tom Krasovic that it will be five years before the Padres are good again, so Krasovic creates a blueprint for the team.
  • Some of his suggestions: Make the most of every dollar, go after high upside pitching, find out how much Adrian Gonzalez and Heath Bell would bring in a trade.
  • WEEI.com's Alex Speier reports that Roy Halladay does not have a list of teams he would accept trades to. Last week Joe McDonald of the Providence Journal reported that Halladay had such a list, but it is not the case.

Heyman On Deadline Deals

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 12, 2009 at 9:16pm CDT

Jon Heyman of SI.com believes Roy Halladay will be traded before the end of the month. Here are some teams that could pursue him:

  • The Phillies have the right combination of money, prospects and need to go after Doc.
  • The Rangers probably don't have the money to take on the $14.25MM Halladay makes this year.
  • It's hard to see the White Sox obtaining Halladay without surrendering Gordon Beckham in the deal.
  • Heyman considers Beckham as close to untouchable as it gets, along with Neftali Feliz, Derek Holland, Brett Wallace and others.

Heyman lists over 30 trade candidates; here are some highlights:

  • The A's may have to hold onto Matt Holliday and hope for a pair of high draft picks after the season, as Holliday's shown little power recently.
  • The D'Backs aren't impressed by what the Brewers are willing to give up for Doug Davis, so they may try to keep him in Arizona.
  • The offers for Chad Qualls may be too tempting for the D'Backs to ignore.
  • "Teams will call" about Cliff Lee.
  • Jose Valverde would be a trade candidate but for one thing: "the 'Stros don't like to sell."

And finally, a note on Pedro Martinez:

  • Pedro should decide on his future soon. The Phillies are the favorites, followed by the Rangers.

Odds And Ends: Rolen, Gonzalez, Buchholz

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 12, 2009 at 8:47pm CDT

Time for more links as we wrap up the weekend after a rain-shortened Futures Game. Well really a rain-prolonged Futures Game, but here are the links either way…

  • As Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com points out, there was a time when GMs made a point of attending All-Star Games. This week, many will spend time with their families and message one another from a distance.
  • Blue Jays Assistant GM Alex Anthopoulos says the Jays plan on keeping Scott Rolen around through the end of next season, when his contract's up, according to MLB.com's Brian Eller.
  • Yahoo's Tim Brown reports that Adrian Gonzalez will continue to be a Padres fan whether he plays in San Diego or not. Gonzalez seems to have confidence in the team's new CEO, Jeff Moorad.
  • Clay Buchholz told WEEI.com's Alex Katz that he'll focus on process, not results when he pitches for the Red Sox in Toronto after the break.

Buchholz Called Up, Scouted By Jays?

By Steve Adams | July 12, 2009 at 4:34pm CDT

WEEI.com's Alex Speier writes that the Red Sox will recall Clay Buchholz from Triple-A Pawtucket to make a start in Toronto following the All-Star Break. With two starters in the All-Star Game, Boston wants the ability to give Tim Wakefield and Josh Beckett extra rest following the break.

WEEI's Alex Katz confirmed that the Blue Jays had two scouts in attendance for Buccholz's last minor league start, in which he surrendered four earned runs to bring his season thus far to a 7-2 record with a 2.36 ERA.

Roy Halladay Rumors: Sunday

By Nat Boyle | July 12, 2009 at 10:08am CDT

Tired of Roy Halladay rumors yet? Have some more.

  • Joel Sherman of the New York Post has listed 10 do's and dont's for blockbuster deals.
  • Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times says Frank McCourt can make World Series champions out of the Dodgers if by acquiring Halladay and he could start by offering Russell Martin in a package with prospects Devaris Gordon and Josh Lindblom. Shaikin concedes, "This is not to say the Jays would accept Martin, Gordon and Lindblom for Halladay, or even that the Dodgers would offer that package. The coaching staff would be reluctant to lose Martin at this point of the season, and the organization has all but deemed Gordon untouchable."
  • The Philadelphia Inquirer's Bob Ford says Citizens Bank Park wouldn't deter Halladay from going to the Phillies.
  • Troy E. Renck says the Rockies won't change their business model to acquire Halladay. They are committed to building from within and that a seven-year, $150MM contract after 2010 would not happen. If they can't retain him, then Renck can't advocate giving up a hypothetical package of Ubaldo Jimenez, Ian Stewart, and two top prospects to get him. Dave Krieger of the Denver Post agrees.
  • In the same piece, Renck says the Dodgers could land Halladay if they will part with Clayton Kershaw, and that the Phillies remain the favorites. Still, Renck expects Toronto to take Halladay off the block and to instead cut payroll by dealing Alex Rios.

Odds & Ends: Berroa, Futures Game, Yankees, Pedro, Rolen

By Mike Axisa | July 11, 2009 at 5:26pm CDT

There's no such thing as too many links…

  • Most fans expressed their displeasure with the move in our comments, but Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus defends the Mets' signing of Angel Berroa.
  • ESPN's Keith Law tell tells you everything you need to know about the prospects playing in this year's Futures Game, and then some. The game is tomorrow at 1pm CST.
  • Yankees scouting director Damon Oppenheimer comfirmed to NoMaas' Lane Meyer that the team has signed two draft picks, including seventh rounder Sean Black. Black was the highest unsigned pick in the 2006 draft, heading to Seton Hall instead of signing with the Nationals as the 59th overall selection.
  • MLB.com's Todd Zolecki reports that Pedro Martinez "has said the parties are negotiating a deal," referring to his representatives and the Phillies.
  • Jeff Blair of The Globe and Mail says he's "hearing some interest in (Scott) Rolen." He mentions that there are a dozen scouts at tonight's Blue Jays game, including two from the Dodgers.

Odds & Ends: Stanton, Halladay, Sonnanstine

By Mike Axisa | July 11, 2009 at 3:02pm CDT

Even more links on a slow rumors day…

  • Joe Capozzi of The Palm Beach Post spoke to Marlins GM Larry Beinfest about top prospect Mike Stanton. Beinfest wouldn't say as much, but it sounds like Stanton is untouchable in trade talks.
  • ESPN's Keith Law tweets that a Roy Halladay trade was unlikely two days ago, but seems even less likely now after some conversations.
  • Andy Sonnanstine has been placed on the minor league disabled list with mononucleosis according to Joe Smith of The St. Petersburg Times. If he's out for a while, could it impact the club's ability to make a deal given the lessened pitching depth?
  • Southpaw reliever Alan Embree is out for the season with a broken tibia according to MLB.com's Cheng Sio. Just two games back of the wild card, will the Rockies look to add a reliever?
  • Maury Brown at The Biz of Baseball has a complete list of 2009 All Star bonuses.

Odds & Ends: Betancourt, Halladay, Managers

By Mike Axisa | July 11, 2009 at 11:46am CDT

A few more links for this morning…

  • Joe Posnanski chimes in with his thoughts on the Yuniesky Betancourt deal. As with all of J-Poz's stuff, it's a must read.
  • Phil Rogers of The Chicago Tribune says to keep an eye on the White Sox in the Roy Halladay sweepstakes. He speculates that they could build a package around Gavin Floyd, but Gordon Beckham or Alexei Ramirez would be dealbreakers.
  • Even though it's worked for the Rockies this year, in-season managerial changes rarely work as MLB.com's Thomas Harding points out.
