Blue Jays Rumors

Frank Thomas Released

By Nat Boyle | April 20, 2008 at 9:48am CDT

11:10am:  While I was writing the below, Frank Thomas was released.  That was fast.  I would expect the Jays to call up Adam Lind.  They’ve lost a big chunk of run production, so they should be looking for a new DH.  Barry Bonds?  As for Thomas, I think there will be a lot of interest.  My immediate thought is the Rays, which could come back to bite the Jays.  Better suggestions?

9:48am: More drama coming out of the Blue Jays clubhouse as Frank Thomas has been benched indefinitely, sparking rumors of his potential release.  Last night, the Big Hurt was keeping the bench warm in favor of Matt Stairs at DH.  Even when Shannon Stewart was scratched in left field, Joe Inglett was slotted into left instead of moving Stairs there and plugging the slumping Thomas into the lineup.  Reports Richard Griffin of the Toronto Sun, GM J.P. Ricciardi said this move (benching Thomas for Joe Inglett) was "just putting out what we think is our best lineup to score runs."  That speaks volumes.

This doesn’t seem to be a motivational tactic by Manager John Gibbons akin to Ozzie Guillen’s annual declaration that Bobby Jenks isn’t guaranteed the closer role.  Instead Griffin reports that Thomas was told by Gibbons that this replacement was "indefinite, maybe forever."  In other words, the Jays might be considering releasing him and saving the $10MM owed to Thomas next season; or they could be weathering his displeasure and keeping his PAs to a minimum since the $10MM in 2009 is a vesting option that he earns by recording 1,000 PAs in ’07-’08 (he only needs 304 this year).  No wonder Thomas is peeved.

Mike Rutsey of the Toronto Star reports,

If the Jays do decide to go without Thomas, to release him, they could bring up Adam Lind to play left field on an everyday basis — he is better defensively than either Stairs or Stewart — and have the veterans split the DH duties.  At Syracuse, Lind, a left-handed hitter, is hitting .360 with three homers and 13 RBIs.

Adds Richard Griffin,

If the Jays wish it, his Toronto career, in fact, could be over. A revised DH combo of Stairs and either Rod Barajas or Marco Scutaro could be easier to slot into the batting order than was the slumping one-man roadblock that is the Hurt.  After Scott Rolen returns from an injury rehab assignment in a couple of weeks, there will be nowhere logically for Thomas to hit.

Thomas started slowly through 60 AB last year too before putting together a .277-26-95 season.  PECOTA projects a drop in average, but another 25-90 campaign.  If healthy, I could see Thomas doing even better than those marks.  Still, if they bench or release him it’s to save themselves from having to give $10MM to a 41 year old Thomas.  If they do release him, I would expect him to get signed elsewhere faster than you can say "Barry Bonds".  At which point, I would also expect a fuming Thomas to go on a Hulk-like rampage.

Odds and Ends: Braun, Cueto, Pelfrey

By Tim Dierkes | April 9, 2008 at 10:34am CDT

An assortment of links…

  • Ryan Braun’s agent is in town to talk about extension scenarios with the Brewers.  Perhaps the Brewers could get him for slightly more than the $30MM Troy Tulowitzki received.  As Tom Haudricourt writes, a Prince Fielder extension seems less likely.
  • The Blue Jays once offered Frank Catalanotto for Johnny Cueto, when Wayne Krivsky was new on the job.  Nice try, J.P.
  • Buster Olney believes tonight’s start by Mike Pelfrey might determine the likelihood of the Mets pursuing outside pitching help.  Claudio Vargas remains unsigned.

Blue Jays Sign Alex Rios, Aaron Hill

By Tim Dierkes | April 4, 2008 at 2:42pm CDT

Surprise move by the Jays today – they inked second baseman Aaron Hill to a four-year, $12MM deal with club options for three years after that.  The deal begins with the ’08 season and then covers his three arb years.  Orlando Hudson, a decent comparable, got about $12.8MM for a similar slice of his career.  Sounds fair, and the options are a nice bonus for the Jays.

The Jays also completed Alex Rios’ six-year, $64MM deal.  This is another fine contract for Toronto, as they get four of Rios’ free agent years at a below-market price.  The Jays have a seventh year option for Rios at $13.5MM, with a $1MM buyout attached.  The contract includes a complete no-trade clause for the first two years and a partial thereafter.

Rios Extension To Be Announced Today?

By Tim Dierkes | April 4, 2008 at 11:23am CDT

Baseball Digest Daily is reporting a press conference scheduled at the Rogers Centre this afternoon.  The belief, from BDD and many other quarters, is that they’ll be announcing Alex Rios’ extension.  Standard PR move to wait until the home-opener.

It’s supposed to be a six-year, $65MM deal extension.  It would start with the ’09 season with an option for 2015 for around $15MM.  If those numbers are correct, it sounds like a smart move for Toronto.

Stark’s Latest: Bonds, Howard, Vargas

By Tim Dierkes | April 3, 2008 at 5:15pm CDT

ESPN’s Jayson Stark has a new Rumblings and Grumblings up; let’s take a look.

  • Stark surveyed execs from three teams about why Barry Bonds remains unemployed.  They provided the answers you’d expect, and collusion isn’t one of them.  One of the team officials believes a major injury to one of the 14 DHs could very well result in a Bonds signing.  Related note: Gary Sheffield just tore a tendon in his finger.  Meanwhile, Joel Sherman speculates that Bonds would be a nice match with the Blue Jays.
  • There are signs that Ryan Howard wants an unprecedented contract – he won’t be using Miguel Cabrera as his model.  A trade before he reaches free agency (after the 2010 season) seems likely.
  • Stark says the Mets are eyeing Claudio Vargas but would want him to work at Triple A for a while first.  They’re not showing interest in available guys like David Wells, Jeff Weaver, or Robinson Tejeda.  David Lennon of Newsday counters by saying the Mets do have interest in Tejeda, though nothing is close.

Odds and Ends: Alfonzo, Hill, Kline, Reitsma

By Tim Dierkes | April 2, 2008 at 9:44am CDT

Time for a link roundup.

  • SI.com’s Jon Heyman says the Mets have talked with Edgardo Alfonzo.  Alfonzo, 34, came up a Met and snagged MVP votes in 2000 with a .967 OPS.
  • Seems like Aaron Hill’s contract extension may wait until after the season, when his offensive value is more clearly established.
  • No interest in Steve Kline yet…teams will probably wait the Giants out so they don’t have to pay his $1.75MM salary.
  • If Chris Reitsma doesn’t make a decision soon about heading to Triple A, the Ms could place him on the restricted list.
  • Dejan Kovacevic hasn’t heard anything about Adam LaRoche as a trade candidate, even though extension talks fizzled.
  • Kevin Goldstein believes shortstop Tim Beckham is the "top talent in the draft."

Latest On Rios Negotiations

By Tim Dierkes | March 31, 2008 at 12:27pm CDT

12:24pm: J.P. Ricciardi is optimistic the Rios extension will get done, and the two sides are pushing their deadline back a few days.

8:17am: According to Bob Elliott of the Toronto Sun, the holdup in the Alex Rios negotiations is the amount of money for the option year.  It might be the salary or the buyout amount.  Sounds like a minor stumbling block before completing the six-year, $65MM pact.

J.P. Ricciardi is cautiously optimistic; the Jays kick off their season in less than four hours.  That is supposedly the deadline, but stretching it another day or two doesn’t seem like a big deal.  The Jays are getting a solid price relative to other recently signed right fielders.

No Multiyear Deal For Aaron Hill

By Tim Dierkes | March 31, 2008 at 11:48am CDT

From Buster Olney’s blog this morning:

The Blue Jays attempted to sign second baseman Aaron Hill to a multiyear deal but could not reach an agreement.

Hill, 26, broke out last year with a .291/.333/.459 line.  He could be even better this season, with a shot at 20 home runs.  His defense is among the best in the game at second base.

Hill will reach arbitration for the first time after this season.  Orlando Hudson might be a solid comparable.  Hudson made $2.3MM, $3.9MM, and $6.25MM in his arbitration years.

Odds And Ends: Quintero, Rios, Pierre

By Cork Gaines | March 30, 2008 at 3:27pm CDT

A few random notes from around the MLBiverse…

  • Henry Schulman says the Giants are in need of a backup catcher and a logical choice may be Astros backup Humberto Quintero, whom Bruce Bochy is familiar with from his days with the Padres. He also notes that the Rays have two experienced catchers that were just reassigned to the minor leagues in Josh Paul and Mike DiFelice.
  • The Jays and Alex Rios are closer today to an agreement on a long-term extension than they were yesterday. That according to Rios’ agent, Paul Kinzer. Yesterday it was reported that the Jays had offered a six-year, $65MM deal. No word yet on what any new offers might look like. Kinzer reasserted that a deal needs to be done by tonight or negotiations will be put off until after the season.
  • Bobby Kielty initially accepted his demotion to Pawtucket, but he is now having second-thoughts and will wait a few days to see if any other teams are interested in a switch-hitting outfielder. With all the rumors swirling recently about teams in need of outfield help, I have to believe that Kielty will land a major league gig. PECOTA projects a line of .253/.331/.418 based on 159 plate appearances and Kielty can play all three outfield spots.
  • The Dodgers made it official today, giving Andre Ethier the left field job.   This puts one more nail in the coffin of one of the worst free agent signings in recent memory. The move means that Juan Pierre will be a reserve, one year after signing a five-year, $44MM deal. The Dodgers will certainly look to trade Pierre, but will have to swallow a good portion of the $36.5MM remaining on the deal.
  • A couple of big names have made major league rosters after only earning non-roster spring training invites prior to spring training. The Rockies have given a job to Scott Podsednik, while the Rays did the same with former Rookie-of-the-Year Eric Hinske. In fact, Hinske will start on Opening Day and will be the Rays’ right fielder against right handers to begin the season.
  • Phil Sheriden notes that Adam Eaton was named the Phillies’ fifth starter, but that may not last long as Pat Gillick will certainly be looking for a better option. Sheriden feels that Gillick is much better at making moves in-season than during the offseason.

Cork Gaines writes for Rays Index and can be reached here.

Jays Close To Long-Term Deal With Rios?

By Tim Dierkes | March 29, 2008 at 9:42am CDT

SATURDAY, 9:41am: The six-year, $65MM offer is on the table for Rios.  If the sides can’t make a deal this weekend, the talks will be pushed until after the season.

TUESDAY, 11:57am: This deal remains close, but not done.  The Jays have a firm Sunday deadline with their offer to Rios.

MONDAY, 11:02pm: Ken Rosenthal reports that the Blue Jays are nearing a long-term extension for right fielder Alex Rios.  The six-year deal would cover two arb years and four of free agency, starting with the ’09 season.  The amount would be around $65MM, apparently with a 2015 option for about $15MM.  The Vernon Wells-Rios outfield tandem would be together through 2014 at least.

It seems like a discounted price for Rios, who is only 27.  He’s an above average hitter for his position, and may play the best right field defense in the game.  Those last two arb years may have cost the Jays $20MM going year to year.  So it’s kind of like buying out Rios’ first four years of free agency at a reasonable $11.25MM per.  Right fielders Kosuke Fukudome and J.D. Drew received higher average annual values on their deals.
