Five Teams Eyeing Endy Chavez

By Tim Dierkes | February 10, 2010 at 2:13pm CDT

Five teams are eyeing free agent outfielder Endy Chavez, reports Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports: the Mets, Mariners, Blue Jays, Astros, and Royals.  Chavez had surgery for a torn ACL in July, and Morosi says he could be ready in April or May.

Chavez, 32, doesn't offer much offensively.  His calling card is his defense, which has historically been strong at all three outfield positions.  The question is whether his defense will still be an asset post-knee surgery.

I’m surprised Endy doesn’t get more love. Especially now that teams are looking to strengthen their defensive hands. He profiles to me as the ideal 4th/5th outfielder for a roster.

I agree. He is one of the best defensive players in all of Major League Baseball and certainly deserves a starting job let alone a 4th outfield job. I could see him playing for the Blue Jays and the Astros.

If he wasn’t coming off of a terrible injury, I would agree on his defense. However, his most recent injury could very well be the nail in the coffin to what was a great defensive career.

why? would you rather see guys like chip ambres roaming the mets outfield midway through the season when starters get hurt

No–but then again, why should our choices be limited to Endy Chavez and Chip Ambres?

agreed, but organizational depth is important. Chavez is talking about a minor league deal anyway.

I’ll never forget him robbing Rolen of that HR. I hope he gets a gig somewhere as a defensive replacement if his knee is up to it. The Mets and Royals seem to have way too many OFs already, the Mariners have Byrnes as 4th OF, and the Jays have Lind as 4th OF. So maybe the Astros? No offense to Jason Michaels intended.

Ray King, You are the man. You could beat people in Connect 4 in three moves.

I suppose one of those teams back up outfielders could be DFA’d such as Mitch Maier or Gary Matthews Jr. (yeah right). I still think the Jays make the most sence but come on Tigers! Endy Chavez is a defensive upgrade over Ryan Raburn.

The Blue Jays could use him. I don’t think they have anyone in their organization capable of playing a MLB calibre CF.

Oh, of course the Blue Jays are in on him. Seriously, I admire AA’s drive and all, but… come on.

Endy Chávez is a defensive master, and I could watch him play OF all day without getting bored. He’s also swift with the feet which is a plus. Unfortunately his “achilles heel” brings him back to earth again and again: he can’t stay healthy, and when overplayed, his production goes down. I mss him on the Mets, no question, but I don’t think he’s what the team needs now.

Yeah I agree. I could watch him 365 days a year playing the OF and I wouldn’t get bored. The guy is an amazing outfielder defensive wise. If it werent for Yunieskey Betancourt and his terrible Defense, Endy wouldn’t have been injured.

This is merely a fake rumor about the Mets having interest, probably from Chavez’s own agent in order to draw interest and increase the rate Chavez would receive. This is a simple case of not believing everything you read with regards to the Mets magically being interested in him.

On the other hand, if they did sign him then they should trade Pagan for a pitcher immediately.

      Point taken.

And of course, how could the Mets sign him if they actually “don’t have any money”….

I see him ending up in TOR, the rest of the teams seem to have enough outfielders. Maybe Houston, since he is probably overall a better option than Willy Taveras.

Cool, the Royals are looking for another outfielder. But hey, it’s not like with DeJesus, Maier, Gullien, Anderson, Podsednick, Fields, and Ankiel we have enough anyways.

I’m a fan of Dayton and this won’t happen. Chavez is useless. He has never had a good bat even when he was good. I’ll rather have Brian Anderson out there.

What I am worried about is the recent article — Farnsworth is going for spot #5.

i know i’m going to get criticism for saying the Sox get everyone, etc, but couldn’t they pick him up just in case Theo plans on moving Hermida which we heard rumors about? or just have both as backup OFs? Thought?
