Odds & Ends: Marlins, Wigginton, Rockies, Wood

By Mark Polishuk | July 15, 2010 at 9:12pm CDT

It was on this day in 1905 that Shirley Povich, one of the great sportswriters of all time, was born in Bar Harbor, Maine.  Povich, who passed away in 1998, would've been 105 today and no doubt still would've been keeping an eye on Stephen Strasburg for the Washington Post.

Some news items….

  • The Palm Beach Post's Joe Capozzi wonders if Edwin Rodriguez's planned lineup changes in Florida are a hint towards a possible trade of Cody Ross or Jorge Cantu.
  • Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun adds the Padres and Rangers to the list of "potential fits" for Ty Wigginton.
  • Troy Renck of the Denver Post tweeted a few follow-up points to his story about Colorado's interest in Dan Uggla.  Renck mentions right-hander Esmil Rogers and outfielder Matt Miller as possibilities for a trade package with Florida, but "there's no way" that Jhoulys Chacin would be dealt.  Renck also thinks the Rockies "will listen" to offers for Franklin Morales, though those offers might not be related to any Uggla deal.
  • MLB.com's Anthony Castrovince shares some Cleveland hot stove talk in a reader mailbag.  Castrovince says that Kerry Wood has drawn "minimal, at best" trade interest, but he notes that Wood could be dealt in late August to a team that didn't want to pay an extra month of Wood's contract.
  • In another MLB.com mailbag, Bill Ladson "would be shocked" by a Matt Capps trade.  The Nationals still have Capps under control for 2011, and with Drew Storen still a rookie and Tyler Clippard not pitching well lately, Ladson doesn't think Washington will want to risk dealing their closer.
  • It's "all quiet on [the] Ben Sheets trade front," tweets FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal, though Sheets' recent success "should change" that.
  • Aroldis Chapman's inconsistent control means that Chapman probably won't be promoted to the majors until September, writes John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer.
  • We already know that the Giants have shown some interest in acquiring David DeJesus, and now Hank Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle tweets that a "top Royals talent evaluator" was on hand for the Mets/Giants game at AT & T Park tonight.
  • Steve Kornacki of Mlive.com looks at what the Tigers need to do in the second half and weighs in on some trade options.  Kornacki says that trading for Jack Wilson wouldn't cost much for Detroit, whereas acquiring Dan Haren isn't worth the cost since he doesn't think "the Tigers are good enough to get past the first round of the playoffs. And that’s the only reason to gamble that much for somebody like Haren."
  • Rice's Anthony Rendon, thought to be a potential first overall pick in the 2011 Amateur Draft, is undergoing ankle surgery on Friday, reports MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo.
  • Fangraphs' Dave Cameron has the latest installment of his ranking of the players with the most trade value.  As he goes from #20 to #16, Cameron cites a defending Cy Young Award winner and two potential Cy winners for this season.

I would love to see the Giants trade for DeJesus. Hopfully they can add Rowand to the deal.

That wouldn’t be a problem. Posey and Rowand for DeJesus.

Or given its the Royals, they would need to get Renteria and Rowand for Dejesus.

The Royals have actually had pretty decent trades the last year or so. For the most part at least.

I would love to see Posey straight up for DeJesus. Does anyone know what the Giants are willing to give?

The Giants wouldn’t give up Posey for Butler, much less DeJesus. Hopefully you weren’t serious…

Just an FYI, but “duh” doesn’t really help your credibility.

Anyway, Lincecum is pitching tongiht, and the Royals have about as much chance at acquiring his services as Posey’s.

The Rockies have an abundance of pitching prospects Rogers is worth very little to us, morales could be dealt as well partially because he needs to become a starter and he can’t do that with us

Detroit might not have enough to win it all this year, but they have a lot of contracts coming off of the books next year. They most certainly could use a pitcher of Dan Haren’s caliber for this year and the next two years they’d get to keep him.

I think Cody Ross to the braves would be a good trade. Considering that we dont have a center fielder right now that can rake. Im not saying Ross is a home run hitter, but I’ve seen him play in the past against the braves and do wondrous things. The only thing bad about Ross in Atlanta is that they could get him and David Ross’s last name mixed up.

Ross would have been a Monster in the old “launching pad” Atlanta Fulton County Stadium where every long fly ball had a chance, but the new place just don’t carry the same. Ross has hit so many at Land Shark to the warning track and didn’t quite go out, put him in a place where the ball carries a bit better and he will hit 25-30 a season, like Philly.

Anthony Rendon reminds me of Ryan Braun. Both 3B in college with extremely quick wrists. Both around 6’0″ 190. I think Rendon will eventually move to LF as well….

Why would ANY team want Kerry Wood even if the Tribe footed his entire salary? Because of his contract and production, he has less trade value than Milton Bradley.

Ben Sheets doesn’t have impressive numbers in the best pitchers park in baseball. That has to be scary considering his salary owed (around 5 mil.) There are at least 5 better options is baseball.

Why would the Rockies make Chacin untouchable when you get a 35 HR 2B in return? Chacin has at best a 3-4 starter ceiling…Don’t understand that, Renck.

Francis and Cook have both looked very unstable. If either one of them is goes further in decline, or if any of the 5 current starters gets hurt Chacin is the next one in the rotation. Without Chacin, you’re talking about bringing Greg Smith back into the rotation….LMFAO.

They weren’t supposed to get past the Yankees in ’06 either.

Granted, the ’06 team was a different team. Just sayin’.

Why not go for Haren if he can help give them a chance rather than saying, “We’re probably not good enough to get past the first round so why bother?” I’m very glad fans and writers don’t run my team.

Chacin has a very high ceiling, and could be a no.1 starter for a bad team or a 2 or 3 for a contender.HOwever, the Rockies don’t need an ace, we have one, all we need are quality pitchers. Matzek and Friedrich are two can’t miss prospects, combine that with Chacin and Jimenez, and you could have the most explosive rotation in baseball in 2-3 years (much like todays Giants of Lincecum, Cain, Zito, and Bumgarner.) Franklin Morales can be traded for a real reliever, and Corpas can be shopped as well. Rogers and Greg Smith are tradeable and Wilin Rosario (starting catcher in fuures game) makes Ianetta worthless.

I disagree with the idea that you don’t need a second ace if you want to contend for the World Series. If you look at all of the top playoff teams, they have #2s like Pettitte, Bucholz, Garza, Carpenter, and Hamels. Jason Hammel doesn’t quite match up to them.

Dan Haren has been rumored to be on the market now; I’d love to see the Rockies get him; his salary is manageable enough for the penny-pinching Monforts, although the asking price is supposed to be quite high. I was thinking it might take Chacin, Esmil Rogers, Matt Miller, and another lower-level prospect to get it done.
