Odds & Ends: Brewers, Red Sox, Werth, Gonzalez

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 5, 2010 at 10:11pm CDT

Exactly one year ago, the Marlins signed Brendan Donnelly and the A's traded for Scott Hairston. Here are some links to check out today…

  • Andrew Baggarly of the Mercury News doesn't expect to see the Giants and Brewers strike a deal in the coming days.
  • Giants GM Brian Sabean and one of his top evaluators, Lee Elder, may have been scouting Brewers players at today's Giants-Brewers game, writes Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle.  Schulman lists Prince Fielder, Corey Hart, and Ryan Braun as potential targets.
  • There are scouts from 14 different clubs at tonight's Red Sox-Rays game, tweets Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe.
  • A scout told Dan Hayes of the North County Times (via Twitter) that the inconsistent delivery of recently DFA'd Sean Gallagher is "disappointing".  The righty has been with three clubs in four big league seasons.
  • Matt Klaassen of FanGraphs argues that Jayson Werth would have a whole lot of trade value if the Phillies made him available.
  • The Pirates agreed to terms with six international 16-year-olds, according to Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
  • The Brewers' approach to the trade deadline could depend on the outcome of the meetings the team's scouts are having this week, according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports.
  • Four GMs predicted to Peter Gammons that Carlos Gonzalez will be one of the NL's ten best players next year (Twitter link).
  • Rival scouts tell ESPN.com's Buster Olney that they rank Matt Thornton as one of the game's top ten relievers.
  • Jack Moore of FanGraphs takes our latest Elias rankings and examines what they mean for Carl Pavano and Adrian Beltre.
  • Omar Infante thought he had been traded when Braves GM Frank Wren phoned to tell him he had made the All-Star team, writes David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Top 10? I don’t think so. Good and getting better, but average baserunning ability and poor patience and discipline. Maybe he’ll crack it within the next couple of years.

if he stays healthy he does have a lot of potential you can add him to the list of every other baseball player. i’m not denying that he’s good cause i think he is but the article says next year. that’s not going to happen.

If he would have said 10 best NL outfielders, then maybe. But 10 best NL players? Doubt it. He currently ranks 47th in WAR for NL position players and 35 in wOBA if I counted correctly. Average fielding, average baserunning and poor plate discipline won’t do him any favors.

Looking at all the major stats, and not including Leake, they all outnumber Gonzalez. So, to call him better than all them makes your statement false. You can look up the stats if you want, since i’m lazy right now to type them out.

Matt Capps getting picked by the players is the accomplice to the crime. Because the players picked Matt Capps, the Nats had one representative. If they didn’t have that one representative, Manuel has to choose a representative for the Nats who is likely Zimmerman (although Josh Willingham might have been worthier) and Infante gets left off. Plus picking Matt Capps removes flexibility from the manager to pick Billy Wagner, a lefty out of the pen who is a better reliever.

Matt Capps, about average closer, all-star assassin.

But the biggest is that OMAR INFANTE made the team.

I can totally understand Infante’s confusion. If I were him, I wouldn’t have expected anyone to tell me I was named an All-Star, either — a subpar offensive season (even for him) marred by significant injury time, a brutal season of infield defense relieved only by occasional plus-work in the OF, and I’m going to Anaheim? Don’t think so. (Even the plays-lotsa-positions excuse doesn’t hold; they already took Omar’s teammate Martin Prado for that.)

    • Alex Ankar

No. They took Prado because he leads the NL in hitting and has the most hits in all of baseball. Prado is the best active 2nd baseman in the NL at this point in time – that’s why he made it.

      Reply
      • ykw

I mean, Prado is capable of playing all over the infield and was already an All-Star reserve, so the NL PTBs didn’t need to take another utility guy (and certainly didn’t need to take =that= utility guy).

Problem with these young outfielders like J Upton and Carlos Gonzalez is that they are inconsistent, hack-and-slash approach, and plate discipline issues makes them volatile and more prone to streaks. You just don’t know what you are going to get with them from a week to week basis.

You have to give them some credit though, starteing in the majors at such a young age can really effect the learning curve, it could also be argued that being put in the majors so early might have effected how much better they might have been right know, Would ryan braun have been any better if started in the majors at 22 and not 24?. Probally not.

Any way they are doing pretty well given the added pressure of being young guys in the bigs, does any one else remeber how some people were floating arould that Delmon young was a dud who could’nt live up to the hype? just look at the season he’s haveing know at the ripe ould age of 24.

      Reply
    • jdub220

Upton is inconsistent, but he doesn’t really have plate discipline issues.
He has a .350 OBP, and that’s while being pretty bad (for his talent and previous production) for the majority of the season so far.

I think that you can’t understand cargo’s ability until you watch the amount of games that he has played. Since the middle of last year he has been one of the most productive players in the league. Looking at his stats up to this point in his career do not tell the full of his potential. First off… cargo is possibly the BEST defensive outfielder in the game 2day. He makes tough catches look easy, and never misplays balls. Not to mention his rocket arm. Like everyone mentioned b4 the one thing he can improve upon is his approach to hitting. He is at times to aggressive. but as far as the person who compared him to justin upton… he still hits the ball hard every time he gets to the plate. He can hit it to all fields with power and he has top shelf speed. Once he gains just a little more maturity he will become an NL MVP (unless voters decide that colorado players are still not allowed to win awards because of the prestige of coors field, and instead they give mvp honors to players in phili where my grandma could hit one out). Just watch and by next year he will be hitting over .323 35 home runs 130 rbi and 30 steals

So my question to all the haters outside the rocky mountain region…have any of you SEEN a Rockies game? Have you watched him play on a regular basis? My bet is on probably not, unless you have a baseball package with your satellite/cable provider the only Rockies action you see is on Baseball Tonight..since it is a given that only the Yankees, Red Sox, and Stephen Strausberg exist in the baseball universe take some time to watch this kid play on a regular basis NOW and you’ll see a legit 5 tool player. It is about time a mid market club and its players got some recognition for playing the game the right way.

How about Paul Konerko getting snubbed? He paced all of baseball in home runs! Has an almost .300 average and is tied at the top for HR’s! He has more home runs than any of Joe Girardi’s Yankees! Not quite sure why he was passed over. Even if you are not a Chicago White Sox fan, for the validity of this all star farce, please vote for Paulie to make it as the last member. There will be plenty more for Youkilis and Swisher and all the others but P.K. deserves it more than just about any player on there. He homered the White Sox into an 11 game winning streak. How is that not All Star caliber?

    Reply
    • BoSoxSam

I agree, Konerko has had a great season. However, the 1B position is stacked in the AL. Morneau and Cabrera have have absolutely phenomenal seasons, andeven with the home runs, they are better. Youkilis is next, and besides slim leads in home runs and RBIs, Youk beats him in nearly every other offensive category. He also is a much more respected defensive player. So, I think he’s fourth on the 1B depth chart for the AL team, and just barely misses the cut.

I really hope we don’t get Hart he has another Aaron Rowand written all over him. If you don’t believe me both Rowand and Hart have similar stats rowand’s career best in homers was in 07 when he hit 27 with the Phillies who play in a hitter’s ballpark, Hart has a career best of 24 also in a hitters ballpark this is just a career year. Even a moron like Sabean has to realize that Hart is not the answer to our need and he should learn from the Aaron Rowand bust of a signing that he should get Fielder immediately. Fielder is indeed a proven hitter but what I like most about him is that he rakes at AT&T and right now it is the best time to get him because last offseason we would’ve had to trade Cain and some prospects now we can trade Sanchez along Clayton Tanner,Waldis Joaquin or Kevin Pucetas to go with him now is definitely the best time to grab him if he doesn’t get Fielder the season is over if he does that gives the lineup a huge boost and the rest of the team a shot in the arm. We aren’t out of it yet our division is still tight if the Giants get Prince who knows maybe the playoff run will give Fielder more motivation to play better.

If you think we’d give up Prince for less than he’s worth when he is hot, you are mistaken. We would wait as long as we need to get the package we think he is worth. If we don’t get it, we wait until next year.

nah I don’t think we’re giving up less than he’s worth I’m just saying he isn’t as expensive as he was last offseason where matt cain would’ve been part of the deal along with at least 3 or 4 other prospects now we don’t have to risk losing a good chunk of the farm thats all I’m saying. he will get his worth though

I think the Giants acquire Fielder because of his tremendous power and he’s still relatively young so his power output can only increase. Plus he would wreck havoc on that right field wall. The only thing I worried about as a Giants fan is the Sandoval and Fielder combination would probably be the heaviest 3-4 hitters in the league lol. But I suspect if we acquire both of them they will work hard to cut their weight for next season. Yes I think Sandoval will be the 3 hitter of the future and I think he’s going to have a monster 2nd half this year.
