Phillies Designate Nelson Figueroa For Assignment

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 15, 2010 at 4:22pm CDT

The Phillies designated reliever Nelson Figueroa for assignment, according to David Murphy of the Philadelphia Daily News (via Twitter). The club also activated Chad Durbin and Antonio Bastardo and subsequently optioned Bastardo to Triple A.

The Phils claimed Figueroa off of waivers from the Mets back in April and the right-hander has since posted a 3.46 ERA in 26 innings of work, allowing 20 hits and nine walks, while striking out 15. Those numbers are solid, but MLB teams let Figueroa to clear waivers six weeks ago, so chances are it'll happen again.

Dang, Figgy. Should have head over to Japan when you had the chance to.

He has pitched well recently. Baez who rarely pitches (for obvious reasons) needs to go. Another bad signing by RAJ….they both need to go.

Joan Baez is terrible. I’d rather keep Figgy over him.

How soon until he starts ripping the Phillies?

Waivers is the natural habitat of Nelson Figueroa.

I have a hunch that Figgy might not clear waivers this time around as teams are scurrying for pen help. Very serviceable reliever.

now the bullpen is 100% healthy which is a real good thing. Durbin and Madson are arguably their 2 best arms, and they are both back now. Now they just have to find a closer… easier said than done.

In related news, Danys Baez was seen laughing his ass off and lighting a celebratory cigar.

Great, take the one guy who’s been consistently reliable and put him on waivers so that Lidge can continue to give up home runs, Romero can continue to wildly fling baseballs somewhere within 20 feet of the plate, and Baez can continue to suck. I don’t know what Figueroa’s peripherals look like, but I do know that he, unlike anyone still in that bullpen, can be counted on to get outs. I guess the Phillies will be enjoying their first third place finish since 2003.
