Pirates, D’Backs Agree On Chris Snyder Trade

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 30, 2010 at 10:43pm CDT

10:43am: The minor leaguer going to the Pirates will be shortstop Pedro Ciriaco, tweets Kovacevic.  Baseball America ranked Ciriaco 27th among D'Backs prospects heading into the season, praising his defense and speed.

9:55am: The Pirates will also receive a minor leaguer in the deal, reports MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch.  So it's Snyder, a minor leaguer, and cash to the Pirates for Carrasco, Church, and Crosby.  The Pirates will not flip Snyder, tweets Kovacevic.

9:42am: The D'Backs will also get reliever D.J. Carrasco, reports MLB.com's Steve Gilbert.  Carrasco has $336K plus incentives left on his contract this year, and he's under team control through 2012.  He should be a useful piece in what figures to be a revamped bullpen for Arizona next year.

9:31am: The D'Backs will receive Bobby Crosby and Ryan Church in the deal, tweets Jack Magruder of FOX Sports Arizona.  This explains the call-ups today of Argenis Diaz and Jeff Clement, to some extent.  The inclusion of Crosby and Church offsets about $883K of the $8.18MM still owed to Snyder.

8:56am: Despite an agreement in principle, the two sides are still talking about names going to Arizona, tweets Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports.  Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette spoke to an uninvolved industry source who wonders if the Pirates might flip Snyder.

SATURDAY, 12:37am: The only thing standing in the way of a Snyder-to-Pittsburgh deal is the commissioner's approval for cash changing hands, reports Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic.  It is still not clear as to what Arizona will receive in return, he adds (via Twitter).

FRIDAY, 8:57pm: The Pirates have spoken to the D’Backs about a trade that would send catcher Chris Snyder to Pittsburgh, according to Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports. The FOX Sports writers suggest Arizona would likely send money to Pittsburgh in any deal. Snyder has $1.7MM remaining on his contract in 2010, plus $5.75MM next year and either $6.75MM or a $750K buyout in 2012.

The Pirates currently have Jason Jaramillo and Erik Kratz on the active roster, but Ryan Doumit is on the DL with a concussion. Like Snyder, Doumit has a lot of money coming his way. He'll earn $5.1MM in 2011 and the club holds options for 2012-13.

Earlier in the week, Bill Shaikin of the LA Times reported that the D'Backs were trying to trade Snyder, but this is the first we've heard of the Pirates' interest.

I remember that the Pirates were interested in him last year. If they don’t have to give up that much, I would really like it because Doumit has been all around awful this year and the backups have been terrible as well.

Being one of the best pitchers for the Pirates doesn’t mean you’re any good. But if we can trade Maholm for something good in return, we should make the trade. We aren’t going to be a winning team this year, so we might as well make moves to help achieve that goal in the future.

He has power….and decent behind the plate. In about 350 AB’s a year he averages 15 hrs….give him more ABS and he hits 20 a year for sure. That said I would love if AZ can shed him and his payroll since we have Montero and Hester as a backup in AAA.

      he’s just ok w/ the bat. a .230 hitter w/ pop.
defensively? he’s VERY good. a very good game-caller.
and sharp w/ the glove. i think he ended an ‘error-less’ streak not too long ago, making him 2nd or 3rd all time, for consecutive games played w/o an error (in the history of baseball)… thats pretty impressive. he can throw out alot of runners w/ his above avg arm, but most impressive to me, and a reason i’m hesitant to move him (despite a hot hitter in montero)… is that he’s an EXCELLENT game caller. you should see the splits between our starters ERA w/ snyder behind the dish compared to games w/ montero behind the dish. its not exact, but something like, (rough estimates): Kennedy has a 5.10 ERA w/ montero, but a 2.84 w/ Snyder, or… Enright has a 3.76 ERA w/ montero, but 1.82 ERA w/ snyder, etc…

take it for what its worth.

Curious, at best. How is Snyder’s defense because is numbers with the bat aren’t very inspiring. I’d take a pass Neal, not a move we need to be making right now…..although, I don’t remember the last time I saw a Pirates catcher throw out anybody…might be nice for it to happen occasionally. I like that the Pirates are trying to upgrade here, but I looked up Snyder’s stats and they aren’t pretty by any means. 2007 and 2008 he batted over 300 times and hit .252 and .237
But, he did hit 13 HRs and then 16 in 08.

I hate Ryan Doumit because of his horrible defense and his really streaky hitting.
Snyder has a career .233 avg
Doumit has a career .270 avg

If they have very similar contracts, I would stick with Doumit over Snyder.

    Reply

The main difference is that Snyder can actually play a position on the field. Doumit really has no business anywhere other than DH or bench bat at this point…and even that is marginal with his bat lately.

Downgrade in average. Slight upgrade in power. Huge upgrade in defense. If Arizona is paying a chunk of his salary as well, have to do it.

Despite the low average Snyder is basically a league average bat. He draws a good number of walks, enough to make his career OBP higher than Doumit’s.

i dont like it either. i was a fan of Cirriaco (the speedy/good defensive AAA 2B prospect), so i dont see why he was thrown in. I surely dont want Church or Crosby- both bums, hitting like .180 & .230 respectively this year. I’ll miss snyder’s game calling and defense, but i understand why we moved him. cant be paying a backup catcher that much $$ and montero’s bat is far too hot to keep out of the lineup. I REALLY am excited for the addition of Carrasco, as his track record shows, he’s a very solid bullpen arm, something we dont have outside Heilman.

I’ll live with the trade, but wish we’d give back church & crosby and we can get cirriaco back. pretty much, if we could of pulled a: Snyder & cash for Carrasco??? i’d be a VERY happy man this morning.

Toronto _could_ also be in on Snyder – they tried to get him early in the offseason but weren’t convinced that he was healthy. PIT could flip him there for a decent prospect. Wouldn’t make much sense with Arencibia in the fold, though. My guess is that PIT deals with BOS again, sending Snyder there.

I meant beat Pittsburgh to dealing a catcher..the Jays don’t need another catcher, they have Arencibia who’s OPSing 1.000 with 30 home runs, and D’arnaud, who BA just put in the top 50 prospects in the midseason thing.

I guess I don’t see how this trade makes sense for the Diamondbacks, unless it’s just a swap of bad contracts. If the D-Backs are trying to get younger, acquiring DJ Carrasco, Ryan Church, and Bobby Crosby, isn’t the way to do so. The only way this really makes sense is if Arizona turns around and peddles at least two of them to contenders for prospects.

    Reply
    • louis_09

counciltucky: good luck “peddling” Crosby or Church for prospects that are worth a lick. Carrasco will stick around – he is a decent bullpen arm. Church just can’t seem to stay healthy, and Crosby did NOT improve his value this year.

Also, swapping bad contracts could be a reasonable explanation…depending on the amount of $$$ being sent from AZ to PITT. Also, swapping contracts shouldn’t include a minor leaguer.

For the Pirates, trading 2 players we don’t need + a decent reliever for someone we can TRY to use + a prospect + cash to cover some of the contract = solid.

      Reply
      • counciltucky

It’s definitely a good deal from the Pirates’ perspective. It’s just a bit of a head-scratcher from Arizona’s.

And maybe I abuse the term “prospect”. Really, in terms of attempting to peddle Crosby and Church, I mean, “someone who has a pulse and plays in the Midwest League”.

As for Carrasco, I agree, he’s a decent arm. It’d make sense for Arizona to spin him off to a contender for a prospect (this time “prospect” could be someone with a decent chance at helping out in the bigs by 2012). Why keep him in Arizona if the D-Backs don’t have a chance to win this year?

Also, are any of these three going to be free agents at the end of the year?

I wonder if Doumit’s concussion*S* (plural) are more serious than they are letting on? He is a BUTCHER at 1B/RF (even worse than behind the plate), so what else can he do for the Pirates? He may be best off in the AL as a switch-hitting DH; he could stay physically more healthy, and concentrate on hitting (which, when he’s healthy, is not all that bad).

I don’t mind dealing Crosby. I liked Church – he really wasn’t healthy at all this year, and would be interesting *if* he could stay healthy. Carrasco probably had to go to make this work.

ALSO, lets see who the minor leaguer is and how much $$$ is coming Pittsburgh’s way. Could make this favorable for the Pirates.

Weird trade. I’m not a huge Doumit fan, but what’s the point in nearly spending 10M on catchers when the rotation is in shambles? Also, I don’t think Doumit’s bat really plays anywhere other than catcher. They will obviously look to slip Doumit through waivers (Boston maybe?) or trade him next season. Hell, they could be trading Snyder at the deadline next season.

I’m not a big fan of Snyder but he looks like he has some power for a part time player, might be able to get 20 HR’s if he starts a lot of games. Hope he has good D though.

It’s kinda nice to see the Pirates spend a little money I guess, the payroll is very low so they should be able to take on his contract. I just hope they get their top picks signed and work on bringing in a good pitcher in the off-season.

snyder has SOLID defense. he’s just a .230 hitter w/ POP (25 HR max, if full time catcher). But he’s a MUCH better game-caller than Montero for us, showing a full 1 to 2 point dip in our starter’s ERA when he’s behind the dish, as opposed to montero.
