Rockies Likely To Sell

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 28, 2010 at 10:37pm CDT

The Rockies are likely to become sellers, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. The 51-49 Rockies have lost seven consecutive games and now sit in fourth place in the NL West, 8.0 games behind the division-leading Padres and six games behind the Wild Card-leading Giants.

The Phillies are showing interest in Aaron Cook, though their enthusiasm for him is "limited at best." The Rockies are "quietly shopping" Cook, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post and have stopped pursuing Jorge Cantu, according to Rosenthal. The Phillies are also one of the teams interested in Joe Beimel.

The Rockies will likely keep free agent-to-be Jorge De La Rosa in hopes of signing him or obtaining draft pick compensation, Rosenthal says. The left-hander currently projects as a Type B free agent. The Rockies could deal Melvin Mora and Ryan Spilborghs if they wanted to, since other clubs are interested. However, the Rockies’ rivals are not willing to give up much for either player at this point.

I think the Jays would consider Downs for Reddick in the end.

Thats the most fair and realistic offer I have ever read from a Red Sox fan, that addresses the Sox’s needs in the bullpen and gives a guy with good upside a chance to play the game in a different environment, Reddick wont get you Downs IMO but Biemel would do good for the Sox

Joe Beimel for Josh Reddick? Beimel is just what the Red Sox need.

I’m curious how much Beimel would have to pay Wally the Green Monster for the rights to uniform number 97.

I would love to see Barmes go to the Tigers to open up a spot for Jon Herrera or Chris Nelson to start everyday at second.

Spilborghs seems like a good fit in Atlanta. Either he or Heyward could play CF with other in RF and would fit as a quality right handed hitter. Because of the time left of team control he won’t come cheap though.

I haven’t been paying close attention to Atlanta lately, but I’m still surprised McLouth got sent down. Spilborghs wouldn’t be bad, but may not provide much impact. I could see Wren looking at Luke Scott or Cody Ross. Corey Hart might be a longshot.

I’m still hoping for Bautista in RF and Heyward in CF but I’m afraid AA would ask for one of Freeman, Teheran, Vizcaino, Delgado, or Minor in return.

exactly, Batista just now hit this power surge, lets hope if the Braves traded those prospects it wont be for a fluke power year, dont get me wrong i like Batista but my post up top will bring example Nate McLouth

        • frank_costanza

I took that Gonzalez/Escobar deal as not only getting rid of Escobar, but also getting the right handed bat they wanted. I think AA would ask for one of those young pitchers that the Braves dont want to part ways with.

      • woadude

Yeah i was wondering all season what happened to McLouth…this guy was really promising and all the sudden dropped off…he could be a sign teams shouldnt persue Batista until they see maybe this isnt a fluke power year.

Jimenez has pitched like crap lately, they just lost to Pittsburgh, Hawpe hasn’t found his power, Helton is still out, and Street just went down for a while. Yep, Rosenthal really had to dig for that story.

the rockies tend tobe streaky and could easily come back if Jimenez returns to form. Most of our guys are underperforming so O’Dowd holds onto hope. Only now that the excuses of Rough teams, No Tulo, and not at home have dissapeared he knows we’re dead and wil put everyone but Street, Jimenez, Gonzalez, Tulowitzki, maybe Smith too. (As welll as our very best prospects)

I’ve wanted the phillies to sign beimel since his last year in LA. He always does good and goes unsigned till the start of spring training and wouldn’t you know it they’re interested in getting him. Why couldn’t they of just signed him? smh

Beimel would be the situational lefty that the Phillies bullpen needs. Beimel is, however, another player that I think will be placed on waivers.

If the Rockies eat a decent portion of Cook’s salary, I could see the Cardinals taking him in exchange for a low-end prospect. He’s a slight upgrade over Suppan (Cook this season: 1.535 WHIP, 4.2K/9, 3.6BB/9; Soup this season with StL: 1.778 WHIP, 3.3K/9, 3.8BB/9).

And we can use Cook for the back-end of the rotation next year after Penny takes his thorough fitness regimen elsewhere.

That’s the problem. The Rockies can’t afford to pay a guy NOT to play for them. The more the Rockies pay…the better Cook becomes. A $5miilion dollar #5 isn’t great deal..but it’s a good deal. But spending $5 million to save $5million isn’t so good on the Rockies end.

if they ship out aaron cook brad hawpe chris iannetta and clint barmes then i dont care. it means they get to replenish their diminishing farm system and guys like smith, chacin, herrera for now and eventually chris nelson get the playing time, therefore making it a win situation. the rockies arent like other selling teams shipping out their veterans to rebuild the entire team. the rox have legitimate right-now replacements in the players i just mentioned

What they should really be looking for is a closer. Aardsma hasnt pitched as well this year as he has last, but he still has gone 18/22 in save opportunities. Kevin Gregg is another guy, even though AA would ask for much more than he is actually worth. Plus he wears sports goggles.

I wonder if the Red Sox would trade for Nate McLouth…. he is down but was steady rising and maybe had a nagging injury he didnt disclose, his value could go back up.

The Rockies may not be doing good this year, but they will for sure be strong next year. With studs like Gonzalez, Tulowitzki, Stewart, and Smith headlining their offense along with pitchers like Jimenez, Chacin, Francis, Cook (if he doesn’t get traded), and maybe De La Rosa if he resigns, the club should be strong next year if they avoid injuries. The Rockies would be contending near the top of the division this year if it wasn’t for the fact that so many key players have gotten injured (ex. Tulowitzki, Helton, Francis, De La Rosa, Street, Hawpe).

not cheap, probably more than it would to get lilly but less than Lee, like what was given acually given up for Haren. Except replace saunders with a MLB ready prospect, not necessarily great. Jon Jay, a minor league pitcher, a AAA infielder and a throw in would probably do it

That sounds about right. I’d add that one of those players needs to be a corner player especially infield.
