Royals Like Jeff Francoeur

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 23, 2010 at 12:39pm CDT

The Royals 'like' Jeff Francoeur, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (via Twitter). The Mets would like to trade Francoeur, and Royals GM Dayton Moore was in the Braves front office when the right-fielder made a name for himself in Atlanta, so the Mets and Royals could become trade partners. About $2MM remains on Francoeur's salary, and that's an obstacle for the Royals, according to Rosenthal.

The 26-year-old told Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork that he wouldn't mind getting traded. Even if he stays in New York for the rest of the season, Francoeur may get a change of scenery this winter, since he's a non-tender candidate. Francoeur has hit .247/.297/.380 this year, though he did post an .836 OPS after the Mets traded for him in 2009.

Wow, raise your hand if you didn’t see this one coming. I was starting to think the Royals were getting better. They have a lot of big time prospects and it seems some of the weaker vets are on their way out at the deadline. Bringing in a guy like Franceour would just set them back.

Podsednik is actually a much better player than him right now, and that’s saying something. They need to go with Gordon, Pods, DeJesus (when healthy) in the outfield, and Kila at DH.

Pretty soon, Dayton Moore will achieve his goal of piecing together the first ever lineup in which every hitter posts a sub .300 OBP.

With a trade offer like that I’m guessing you’re a regular caller to WFAN in New York. That offer is categorically insane and even Dayton Moore would laugh it off. You want to talk seriously about Greinke – one of the most valuable assets in baseball considering his well under market value contract of 4 years, 38 mil (though it’s backloaded) – and you’re talking a price closer to Ike Davis, Jon Niese, Jenrry Meija AND one of Flores, Martinez or Thole. Even that might not be fair value because none of those players are even close to a sure thing – Davis is the best of the bunch but not a great fit for the Royals considering their roster composition.

Francouer, though he may have some value to KC (don’t ask me what it is), is a likely non-tender candidate this off season. That is not the sort of piece included in a deal for one of the 5 best pitchers in baseball.

Respectfully, you’re just wrong. Frenchy’s not a good regular baseball player and he’s had ample time to prove it. Martinez has upside, but he has a limited track record of actually hitting well, and has a huge track record of not taking the field due to injury. Thole could be a solid regular catcher, which is valuable, but not a major building block. Mejia has never shown he can keep his walk rates at a reasonable level above A-Ball and there are real questions about his repertoire, with many still thinking he’s destined for the bullpen.

The Royals have way more reasons to not trade Greinke than to trade him, and he’s so valuable that if he were actually on the market, many, many teams would have Godfather offers to top what you mentioned in a heartbeat.

And again, I say this as a Mets fan. Dayton Moore can have any nine of my fingers and toes thrown in for Greinke.

First of all, I assume that Moore likes Francoeur in the flier sense. At his age, performance, track record, and contract, he doesn’t actually add anything to a trade.

Second, you’re ignoring the existence of other teams. Your praise of the guys in the trade is fine, but other teams can and will top that trade. Zero chance the Mets can get Greinke without including Flores, and even then, if the Red Sox build a trade around Buccholz or the Rays make a big play, etc., the Mets will struggle mightily to make the best offer. And if teams are going to go all-in on anyone, it’s Greinke.

If I remember correctly, it was Dayton Moore that signed Frenchy to his first pro contract. Chalk another one up for the Land of Misfit Braves. Seriously, Kyle Davies, Brayan Pena, Anthony Lerew, Wilson Betemit, Kyle Farnsworth, Bruce Chen, Roman Colon, formerly Juan Cruz, Ned Yost….and that’s just this year! And of course, who can forget starting Tony Pena Jr at SS for 2 years, ouch!

Oh, and the Land of Misfit Braves is a fantastic mental image. Thank you for that. I’m picturing Sid Bream missing an eye and Ryan Klesko walking in circles.

Out of curiosity how is Dayton Moore one of the worse GM’s in baseball? Do you realize that he has given KC the No. 1 farm system in baseball (which was his No.1 goal)? Sure he has had some unsuccessful trades but who hasn’t? Actually his trades have been low risk- low reward trades. If you’re going to blame anybody you have to blame the owner David Glass for not giving DM enough resources to go get that blockbuster free agent!

KC has tons of talent including Moustakas, Hosmer, Myers, Colon, Montgomery, Lamb, Dwyer, D. Robinson, C. Robinson, Crow, Sample, Melville, Ka’aihue, Coleman… should I continue? All of them would be top 5 prospects in almost every other farm system in the MLB.

Sorry, but Clint Robinson and Ka’aihue would not be top five prospects in any farm system in the Majors. In fact, neither would Coleman. And in Colon’s case, you can’t really include a guy with virtually no professional experience in the top ranks of baseball prospects based on his collegiate statistics.

Kansas City has a respectable system, but you’re definitely over-valuing some players here.

Ok, I didn’t see the updated midseason rankings, but regardless, I’d still take the Rangers, Rays, Indians, and Marlins farmsystem over the Royals. It doesn’t what I say though because you people are way too bullheaded to realize when you are overvaluing your own prospect. I understand guys like Hosmer, Moustakas, and Montgomery, but Rebecca is listing players who don’t even have a year of pro ball under their belt.

I would say the 4 teams you listed and KC all are legit top 5 farm systems no matter what order you put them in. Kansas City probably has the No. 1 crop of pitching (especially LHP) of all farm systems. They also have a hell of a group of position players. As far as the post from Rebecca, she is spot on except for Coleman and Clint Robinson. The rest of them would all be top 5 prospects in just about every other system.

Francouer for Farnsworth is as equal as it gets for both teams. The money is almost equal as is their future value to them(practically none). But the Royla sget a useful RF’er with Dejesus hurt and maybe still tradeable in August and the Mets get a set-up guy for their diminishing chances at a play-off run.

I think the only reason why Moore would trade for Franceour would be for the defense. I do believe he is an upgrade to Mitch Maier but even still, they should just bring up Gordon and let him play in left and move Pods to right or center because Ankiel is back now. I don’t understand why we would even need another outfielder since we have Bloomquist as a super utility player anyway!?

everyone needs to stop bashing francoeur. his batting numbers aren’t ideal but he’s an animal in the outfield. he has, undoubtedly, the best arm in the game, he is an above average defender, and leads the league in put outs. there aren’t many guys who can be game changers defensively like him. i know many teams don’t get guys just for defense anymore but just his presence in RF has caused 3B coaches to hold runners at 3rd or 2nd. like i said, his numbers aren’t ideal so i’m not here to speculate who the royals would trade but they aren’t as ugly as everyone is saying. he is not “the worst outfielder in baseball.” i also would like to point out his numbers after he was traded to the mets last year….maybe another change in scenery brings his numbers up like they did before?

example of a worst outfielder…jason bay…the royals should take jason bay off the mets hands (francoeur has more HR, same average, and as i already stated….is a very good defender for a lot less money)

Trade Frenchy straight up for Kyle Farnsworth. works out for both parties considering the Royals want an outfielder now that David DeJesus is out for the rest of the year, and since the Mets want an 8th inning guy. Plus, if the Royals lose Frenchy to free agency at the end of the year, and he performs like he did when the Mets acquired him half way through the 2009 season, than it all works out. does anyone agree with me?

I’m not sure what half of this even means. The Royals can throw Guillen, Pods, Ankiel, Gordon, Maier and even Bloomquist out there. How is Franchy an upgrade over any of those players? The Mets some how walk away with a semi-useful player by trading the worst player on their roster? Lose him to free agency???? If he performs well it all works out? What does this mean? How does this help the Royals? Why would this be incentive for them to trade for him? How would they lose him to free agency? Who would put him on a major league roster at this point? Let alone out bid the Royals for his services?

Francoeur has a -3.9 uzr for the year, -2 the year before and -2.5 the year before that. His ops sits at a cool .677 for a right fielder. He may be in the top three least valuable position players in the game!!!!!!!! The Mets will not get Farnsworth with fip 3.26, era 2.41 and positive WAR for a below replacement level player. So Mets fans just stop, OK!!!! Frenchy is making a cool 5 mill to be horrible. If the Mets get any salary relief from the Royals then they will jump on it right away. Holy smokes people!

farnsworth isnt very far fetched…look at past trades the royals have made….coco crisp for ramon ramirez….mike jacobs for leo nunez…clearly the royals like getting washed up bats for good bullpen pitchers….personally i see francoeur for farnsworth as a trade thats a lot better than nunez for jacobs
