Mariners Return Rule 5 Pick Jose Flores To Indians

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | March 25, 2011 at 1:29pm CDT

The Mariners announced that they returned right-hander Jose Flores to the Indians (Twitter link). Seattle had to offer the Rule 5 pick back or keep him on the 25-man roster all season long and Cleveland accepted Flores back and assigned him to minor league camp.

The 21-year-old, who signed with Cleveland as a non-drafted free agent in 2005, posted a 12.27 ERA in four relief appearances this spring. He has a 3.92 ERA with 7.4 K/9 and 3.5 BB/9 in 79 minor league games, but has yet to pitch above Class A.

Cleveland could re-obtain another Rule 5 pick before long, as the Pirates may not have roster space for infielder Josh Rodriguez. Oddly, the Mariners still have two pitchers named Jose Flores in their system even after today's transaction.

Well that explains it. The Mariners want only 2 Jose Flores in their system. I can’t blame them.

With all the problems in some of the Latin countries, are they sure they don’t have two Jose Flores using fake names? And I hope the paperwork people were careful here. You wouldn’t want to send back the wrong pitcher.

Hi I’m Jose Flores and this is my brother Jose Flores and my other brother Jose Flores. <–A spin off on the Newheart skit with Darrell. Thought I would go retro today.

Well, believe it or not, Yankee top prospect Jesus Montero also has a minor-league brother named Jesus Montero, and you can look it up on baseballreference.

So contenders like the Rays are still considering holding onto a Rule V pick with a super crop of close if not ready to play prospects at the MLB level and a TOP farm system as well.. But lowly Pittsburgh with a roster made up of??? Can’t hold onto one huh?

Just curious amongst other members that really follow the game here and are fans of other teams.. But how many actually know the names of say..8 people, maybe just 6 that played for them last year?? Point is.. This team just is…

Yeah, but Jose Flores is like Joe Flowers in Latin America.
