Red Sox Notes: Buchholz, Beckett, Wakefield

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | March 8, 2011 at 5:43pm CDT

The Red Sox beat the Cardinals in Florida today even though they allowed seven runs. Here are the latest updates on the BoSox, with an emphasis on the team's pitching staff…

  • The Red Sox announced that they agreed to terms with 15 pre-arbitration eligible players including Clay Buchholz and Daniel Bard. Buchholz was an extension candidate and he discussed a potential multiyear deal with the Red Sox, but they haven't agreed on one so far.
  • Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports hears from a scout that Josh Beckett  "looks like he's on [a] mission" and that his pitches are looking good (Twitter link).
  • Tim Wakefield told Kirk Minihane of WEEI.com that he can't envision playing elsewhere. "Why would I? I've been here for so long, why would I go somewhere else?" Wakefield asked. He first suited up for the Red Sox in 1995.

you’re not the only one to make it up

      2007: 6.5 WAR
      2008: 5.1 WAR
      2009: 5.4 WAR

other “not good” 5.1 WAR pitchers: c.c. sabathia and tim lincecum last year

I didn’t realize his WAR was that high for 2008. Though if you add in 2006 and 2010, it looks a little more like he’s only good every other year

if you account for his injury last year, you have a guy who had been excellent for three straight years in the AL East and then had a down year after an injury. i don’t know why you would reach back almost 5 years for data unless you had an axe to grind – which is most “beckett is overrated” commenters do

Beckett’s overall quality in 2008 is hugely misconceived due to the emergence of Lester and the fact he was having back issues in the playoffs. He actually had a great regular season (Which went unnoticed due to Lester having a great season too).

Are you useing fangraphs? Baseballrefrence.com has it listed his war listed as-
        2006: 1.9
        2007: 4.7
        2008: 3.3
        2009: 4.2
        2010: -1.0

When i say good i mean 200 IP, 200 K, 3+ ERA, the ace status numbers, Im just sayeing he seems to play at a higher level every other year.

rWAR is awful, but: another “not good” pitcher: tim lincecum (3.5 rWAR) last year (200 IP, 200K, 3+ ERA)

i suggest you flesh out a standard that makes sense, and i suggest that standard be FIP or something like it

      1. It’s a Red Sox thread 2. even as yankees fansyou should probably care about the sox cause they are always one of our 2 biggest challenges each year. you may not like them, but that’s proof you care albeit negatively…I’m a yankees fan btw I just don’t like all of us looking this bad due to people with comments like yours…

Is that another voice in the Wilderness, I hear?

As a Yankees fan, I make it a point to keep away from the piffing matches that go on this site between Red Sox and Yanks all the time. I find them silly and childish and somethings right down cruel, especially when it’s directed at player injuries.
What galls the stuffings out of me is when SOME Sox fans demean Yankees fans by calling us stupid or ignorant just because they disagree with an opinion.
The sad thing is that when some Yanks fan like Jacob says something that IS actually stupid and cruel and childish, it gives those fans more fodder to use.

I know it’s not going to change anytime soon, but I thought you should be aware that you’re not alone. Good Job!!

Exactly. It’s all baseball guys. I am an avid red sox fan and love to see reasonable sports fans speak up when things get childish. Both of our teams are huge market east coast teams that spend a lot of money. A lot of my best friends are lifelong Yanks fan (believe it or not one from Malborough, MA) and more often than not I see more similarity between our fan bases than anything else.

Does it gall you as much as when SOME Yankees fans call Sox fans stupid or ignorant just because they disagree with the Sox fan’s opinion? It’s a two-way street pal, make sure you treat it as such. Don’t just single out “some” Red Sox fans because both sides are guilty.

it does bother because it just results in stupid banter and then we look bad. we’re not singling out red sox. this is all in response to a yankees fan acting a fool. THere are other things we need to worry about than dealing with stupid homers on each side, for example the the horrible thought of palin as president, and her really wanting to press that that shiny red button.

They pick and choose injuries to report. You tell them one, and “it’s not their thing” Then you see “Adam Wainwright could be out for season” “Chris Carpenter to skip a start due to hamstring”

Not at all, I could care less if they report injuries. I didn’t really mean that in a bad way (now that I re-read it, it kind of sounds bad) This is my favorite, most visited website. You can get the hard facts anywhere, we are all here for the rumors.

Buchholtz extension may be held up until after opening day as the Red Sox are up against the salary tax threshold. Same situations as Adrian Gonzalez. Of course, if he is not willing to give up any FA years he probably does not get a multi-year deal as Theo is on record as saying this is the only reason to give cost controlled players a multi-year deal

As for the discussion on Beckett, he faced the Astros AAAA team, so the results mean little. Even last year he pitched well against weak hitting teams.

While Becketts back is a good excuse for 2010, he did not hurt his back until the 2nd week in May when he was swinging a bat in in preparation for interleague play. His performance in his last 9 starts in 2009 (ERA 6.02) , and his first 7 pre-injury starts in 2010 (ERA 7.46) were awful.
