Braves To Sign Ben Swaggerty

By Mike Axisa | April 23, 2011 at 9:46am CDT

The Braves will sign left-handed pitcher Ben Swaggerty, MLBTR has learned. The former Royals' Double-A Pitcher of the Year asked for and was granted his release out of Spring Training by Kansas City.

Swaggerty, 28, struck out 8.8 batters per nine innings with the Royals' Double-A affiliate last year, posting a 3.81 ERA in 59 relief innings. That was the lowest strikeout rate of his career; he owns a 10.4 K/9 (4.7 BB/9) in four minor league seasons.

I’m sorry that cannot be a real human being. I believe you’re lying to me.

It should be noted that BaseballReference.com lists Swaggerty as a lefty, not righty, as stated in the article. This is especially important considering the lack of depth of power lefties in our system with trading away Mike Dunn (FLA) and Tim Collins (KC). Aside from Brent Oberholtzer, we don’t have very many.

With a last name like that, I’m not surprised he got signed as quick as he did…

We also took Rowdy Hardy from the KC org in the minor league rule 5. He won best name in the minors last year. Two awesome names from the Royals.

in case anyone else didn’t know his name it’s Bean Stringfellow. That may be the greatest name ever.

    I bet he’s OFWGKTA’s favorite player.

There is a reason that the Royals let this guy go. The guy is a strikeout machine and posts fairly low ERA’s. Something’s gotta give.

Numbers look decent enough, and at the very least we can all take joy in his name. I like it.
