Rockies Claim Wandy Rodriguez

By Tim Dierkes | August 23, 2011 at 2:42pm CDT

2:42pm: The Rockies won the claim on Rodriguez, tweets Rosenthal, and talks are ongoing.  The Rockies are particularly low on starting pitching depth at the moment, and may have the idea of another miracle playoff run in the back of their minds.  They're currently 8.5 games out.  Otherwise, Rodriguez would provide veteran depth for the next few seasons with Ubaldo Jimenez gone.  As Rosenthal notes, the Rockies aren't going to want to give up anything of value if they're to take on Rodriguez's entire contract.

1:12pm: Lefty Wandy Rodriguez has been claimed on waivers by an unknown team, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.  Currently Rodriguez is owed just $1.38MM for the rest of this season, plus $36MM for 2012-14 assuming he exercises a player option for the final season.  The Astros have the option of dumping that commitment on the other club, working out a trade with the team, or pulling Rodriguez back.

Rodriguez, 32, has a 3.31 ERA, 7.7 K/9, 3.0 BB/9, 1.0 HR/9, and 45.3% groundball rate in 147 innings this year.

I don’t think so since he’s under contract for a couple more years. The rotation seems pretty much set for next season and beyond with Verlander, Scherzer, Fister, Porcello, and Jacob Turner.

OK, can someone explain to me why the Astros want to dump this guy? His stats are really good overall–consistent ERA, WHIP, K and BB/9, etc. He might be a bit overpaid, but you know what you’re getting year after year.

Who said the Astros want to dump him?  The Astros certainly did not say that.  They specifically said at the deadline that they had no intention of trading him unless they were getting prosepcts in return.  The only one’s saying anything about a salary dump is uniformed, bandwagon AL fans.

uhh…their new owner wants their payroll to get to around $50 million…the ONLY way they can do that is by ridding themselves of the Rodriguez contract….so i guess us dumb AL fans can just read context clues.  Odds are the Astros get very very little or nothing in return…this is simply for salary relief

The Cubs are in need of starters badly assuming they dump Zambrano, and while Rodriguez isn’t cheap, he’s decent enough value for that price and it’s a 3 year commitment, not a 4-5 year that someone like him might command in FA.

Rodriguez, Cashner, Garza, and Dempster is at least respectable as a rotation, and they can fill the 5th spot with another cheap option.  It also gives them at least the option of considering trading Dempster who has just a year left on his deal and might have some value.

So I wouldn’t rule out the Cubs.

I guess it wouldn’t be so bad, but with so many teams being SO reluctant to take this guy and his money on- it’s made me a lil weary… I think $12M could be spent a lil more efficiently in the offseason. Guess it wouldn’t be SO bad, but it’s a good chunk of money to eat up for a #3, esp when there’ll be a new GM coming in, let him figure out if he wants an overpriced SP.

didn’t the Yankees already say they had no interest in him?

as an owner of Wandy in fantasy baseball, I’m concerned. he has always done much better at home than on the road. every season back to and including 2007 he had has an ERA under 3 at home and at least 4+ on the road.
    2010 home- 2.82/1.14
    2010 road- 4.41/1.44
    2009 home- 2.08/1.06
    2009 road- 4.05/1.44
    2008 home- 2.99/1.20
    2008 road- 4.34/1.46
    2007 home- 2.94/1.11
    2007 road- 6.37/1.55

his new home might now work out very well.

teams will do anything to better their own situation. a year ago the Giants claimed Cody Ross and stuck him in a packed outfield with Pat Burrell, Andres Torres, Nate Schierholtz, and Aaron Rowand just for the sake of not letting Ross play for San Diego and kill their playoff shots. so hypothetically speaking if im a second place team, id claim him, use him for the rest of the season, and then trade him to the opposite league or just somewhere outside my division when he starts earning 12 mil a year over the off-season (Depending how he pitches). if he plays like Sabathia did when he showed up in milwaukee, i hold onto him

I don’t know about that happening with pitchers, or in the same exact game, but position players have played for two teams in a single day before. In 1922, OF Max Flack of the Cubs and OF Cliff Heathcote of the Cardinals played in the first game of a double header, got traded for each other, and then played the second game against their former teammates.

Also, Joel Youngblood of the Mets and Expos got two hits for two teams in two different cities in the same day. He hit a single in the 3rd for the Mets in NY, then was pulled from the game and traded to the Expos for a PTBN. The Expos were playing in Philly that day, so he went to Philadelphia, grabbed a uniform, and got into the game halfway through. He collected a single in the seventh to complete the feat.

I don’t understand why the Astros would settle for “nothing of value” for Rodriguez.  His contract is not onerous at all for a guy with 3 straight seasons with an ERA of 3.60 or less.
