Nationals Links: Lannan, Willingham, Roster

By Mark Polishuk | October 7, 2011 at 9:18pm CDT

A few items about the D.C. nine….

  • John Lannan could be a valuable trade chip for the Nats this winter, writes Ben Goessling of MASNsports.com.  Lannan will go into the arbitration process for the second time and could possibly double his $2.75MM salary from 2011.  It's not like the club couldn't afford paying Lannan a $5.5MM salary, but Goessling speculates that the Nationals could address other needs by dealing Lannan and then signing C.J. Wilson as an even better left-hander for the rotation.
  • Also from Goessling, he wonders how the Nats' season would have played out if the team had kept Josh Willingham.
  • MLB.com's Bill Ladson looks at Washington's roster and predicts what each player's role on the 2012 team will be.  Roger Bernadina, Ross Detwiler, Jesus Flores, Chris Marrero and Drew Storen are all listed as "possible trade chips" and Ladson thinks Ivan Rodriguez and Livan Hernandez (among others) are "all but gone."

I’d love to see the Red Sox get in on a Lannan trade, I think he could be a decent back end starter for them. Problem is he’ll probably cost a lot more in prospects than he’s worth, Rizzo has one a decent job of holding out for good value.

Lannan won’t be traded for prospects. He’s valuable enough as a starting pitcher that they’ll keep him around, unless they can package him for a leadoff hitter and/or centerfielder. Or if they can get a real top-50 prospect for him, which isn’t likely.

Im telling u the nationals are going to be the team that is talked about a lot this off season.  I see them as a wild card in all types of players like Prince, Reyes, and Wilson.  N like we all kno and has been stated they are going to be major played on the trade market.  Cant wait to see whAt they do

        Maybe it’s a entire Washington thing 😉

Back to the Nationals..Wonder if the Nats will consider getting involved with Hammer Willingham as a FA? He was popular there and the offense he could provide (if healthy) from the R/H side would be something they sorely need.

Nationals should be able to get a good player this offseason with all these trade chips, just hope they don’t trade Storen. And i also hope they give Bernadina and Detwiller a little more time, they can both be more than adequate MLB players.

The article on Lannan shows the exact way that Rizzo gets good value from trades. He just keeps throwing out facts about how his player is special.

CJ Wilson is on my X-mas list as a Nationals fan

Wilson, Zimmermann, Strasburg is good enough to compete for the Wild Card in 2012
