Minor Moves: Brian Esposito

By Mike Axisa | December 23, 2011 at 8:44am CDT

We'll keep track of today's minor league moves right here, with the latest up top…

  • The Reds have signed catcher Brian Esposito to a minor league contract with an invite to Spring Training, reports Stephen Goff of Examiner.com. The 32-year-old hasn't appeared in the big leagues since 2010, and hit .197/.227/.255 in 168 plate appearances in the Astros' farm system this past season. Goff notes that Esposito has a reputation of working well with young pitchers and essentially serving as an extra coach.

Man, I should have been a catcher.  It’d be nice to have a spring training invite or free agent deal while struggling to crack the Mendoza line.

Too bad it’s one of the hardest positions to play in professional sports..

Ha ha ha ha. I’ll give you baseball, but I think NFL quarterbacks have it a bit tougher.  Catchers don’t have to read defenses and make split second decisions while behemoths are trying to rip their heads off every single play they’re on the field.

With that name he should have been a hockey player. Maybe a goalie 🙂

Career minor league guy. Good reputation with young pitchers. Should fit in with Corky Miller just fine, whose been an unsung contributor to the Reds organization for a few years now. Low risk, low expectations, good move.

He and Corky Miller will make a great minor league tandem to work with the young pitchers, especially if Chapman is in the minors trying to stretch into a starter.
