White Sox, Red Sox Meeting On Danks, Floyd

By Tim Dierkes | December 7, 2011 at 2:28pm CDT

The White Sox and Red Sox are meeting to discuss Chicago starters John Danks and Gavin Floyd, tweets ESPNBoston's Gordon Edes.  Yesterday White Sox GM Kenny Williams called the Sergio Santos trade "the start of a rebuilding," but said that he'd probably keep his pitching intact due to insufficient offers.

To acquire a nice piece like Danks is going to cost quite a bit. It’s an unfortunate position to be in.

how long before the free pass expires, then?  haven’t won a playoff series in six years… with twice the payroll.  will you be saying the same thing in another five years?

The White Sox hadn’t won in nearly 100 years. I’m sure the fans will tolerate a few not as competitive years from Kenny Williams in exchange for ending that drought. Especially when they can rub it into Cubs fans because that Chicago team still hasn’t won anything since your Great Grandpa was a kid.

that wont happen at all. they want a Ubaldo Jiminez type deal meaning basically clean out your prospects and send em all to chicago for a guy who could possibly leave after the season lol. this is one trade i would def not go after if i were any GM. hell with the Chisox and their over charging trades. i dont even like the redsox but i would not wish them to lose their top prospects for a guy who could possibly walk away lol.

While I could care less about his win-loss records, he has bad numbers against the AL East, he has bad numbers at Fenway & he has one more year on his contract. On top of that, Kenny Williams asked for Banuelos/Montero for one year of a #3 pitcher. No thank you.

hes a .500 pitcher mainly cause of the division he pitches in. its not that credible.

because of the division? AL Central is very weak and light hitting with Cleveland and KC. I think he will really struggle in AL East with NY and Toronto, and Baltimore

KW is giving up on the White Sox fans.  Kenny, good luck on getting people to come to the Cell if you plan on tearing apart the team “you built.”  He chased away Ozzie and now he is going to chase away the fan-base.  It’s going to be a long summer in Chicago.

And a one year expensive rental of a bad defensive player with injury problems who’s been declining to play right field at Fenway? No thank you. At least JD Drew had defensive value.

Lowrie/Ryan L/Felix D./Bard for Danks? Also Floyd to Reds with Frazier and Heisley Red Sox and Alonso/Fransico to to White Sox so then White Sox will have a LF and a 3B so then Morel can move back over to first when like a West Coast team aquires Konerko.

No. Ryan Lavarnway is not being traded for a #3 pitcher whose numbers would get worse when he pitched at Fenway.

U.S. Cellular is regarded as a better hitter’s park than Fenway, that’s why Danks’ FIP is so much lower on the road then at home.

Fenway is a hard to pitch in for a left handed pitcher.

And his numbers against the AL East are terrible anyway. His numbers would go up if he came there because he’d have to face the Yankees and such a lot more.

I bet barely anything happens. Rebuilding doesn’t means trading a couple middle of the rotation players. It means trading your starts. This isn’t rebuilding.

I know White Sox fans tend to overvalue Danks, and you are right about the White Sox asking too much. But on a team with a good rotation he would be a good #3 and a bad team’s #2.

      • MeowMeow

In an average rotation he’d be a number 3, but for the Red Sox he’d be a #4 (behind Lester, Beckett, and Buchholz).  I really don’t see him as a number 2 type of guy (by which I mean warranting the COST of a number 2 guy). They shouldn’t be expecting the type of haul the A’s can get for Gonzalez.

    Dunn 3/$44M remaining ($14M 2012)
    Thornton 2/$12M or 3/$18M ($5.5M 2012)
    Danks, $8M estimate

    for

    Lackey 4/$48M remaining ($16M 2012)
    Dubront, $450k estimate
    Reddick, $450k estimate
    Cash

More than $10m off the books of the WhiteSox for next season, 2 serviceable players in return who are MLB ready. Dunn muddles around in RF for 70 games, 1B 10-15 games and Dh 10-15 games. Hopefully he bounces back into the .230s and. 25HR. Effectively just swapping bad contracts with Lackey.

Neither of these SP are of interest. Look deeper and sign/go after more bottom dwellers to fill out the rotation.

Unless the chisox are willing to take back A ball prospects, not named Bogaerts, Ranaudo, Brentz and of course PTBNL that would mean the top SP.s they took in last years draft, forget about these 2.

In roughly 5 years Danks has accumulated 19.2 bWAR in the AL in a hitter park. He had a down year last year, so what. His three previous bWAR were 4.8, 4.8 and 6.4. Some of you folks have a warped sense of a 3 or 4 starter lol.

Why the hell would the White Sox want John Lackey? Dunn is a better bet to rebound than Lackey and would offer more value.
