Rangers Acquire Brandon Snyder

By Tim Dierkes | January 3, 2012 at 1:07pm CDT

The Rangers acquired infielder Brandon Snyder from the Orioles for cash considerations, reports MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan.  Snyder, 25, was drafted 13th overall by the Orioles in 2005, a first round that has become legendary for the talent produced.

Snyder gave up catching after the 2006 season and now plays the infield corners.  In 2011 he hit .261/.312/.406 in 494 Triple-A plate appearances, his third stint at the level.

I think it is Brandon Snyder not Brad. Brad is an outfielder who played in the Cubs organization.

So I guess you’re kinda screwed if he miraculously stays in Chicago for the rest of his career, huh?

Not enough power for a 1B and a pretty glaring miss of a high draft pick. Good kid, though, and he might turn into a decent backup 1B/3B off the bench. No big loss for the O’s.

Best of luck to Brandon Snyder. Great guy, hope he can jumpstart his career.

Is it just me, or do the Orioles and the Rangers make an inordinate number of deals with each other?

Not just you.  The Orioles appear to be the AAAA Ranger’s squad.

Brandon Snyder was ranked as follows at minor league ball:
    2006-#2    B+
    2008- #13   C+
    2009-#8 B-
    2010-#6 B-
    2011- “Others”

So he has had some success in the past, maybe the change of scenery will help.

It will.  The Norfolk stadium was horrible for him.  He also has shown over and over he is a late bloomer.  You got a steal here.  He may never be anything, but the upside is really worth the gamble.

well, he was still a catcher in 2006, and has suffered a lot of injuries since then. if he’d started his career as a 1B, I doubt he gets rated as a B+ prospect or drafted in the 1st round for that matter.

I wonder if those means Texas is looking at a move involving Moreland. Maybe Moreland, Harrison, prospects for an ace? (Insert ace here), Darvish, Lewis, Holland, and Feliz would be sick. Of course, I’m sure I’m just overreacting to a depth signing but I can dream.

I like that dream. I hope that JD is looking to stack the deck for the Rangers to win it all this year.

We don’t need to stack the deck. We just need that one sure thing starter. Which Darvish seems to be that guy.

If the Rangers are looking to move Moreland, I sure hope, for their sake, that they get someone better than Brandon Snyder to take over at first base.

MY and Naps could handle 1B for the time being if needed.
