Reds Sign Andrew Brackman

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | January 4, 2012 at 4:15pm CDT

The Reds announced that they have signed former first round pick Andrew Brackman to a Major League deal. The 26-year-old Cincinnati native will earn the MLB minimum plus incentives, according to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com, who first reported the deal December 13th (Twitter link)

The Yankees selected Brackman 30th overall in 2007, but he recorded just seven outs for them in the Major Leagues. The 6'10" right-hander posted a 5.11 ERA with 8.0 K/9 and 5.0 BB/9 in three minor league seasons before with the Yankees. They declined their 2012 option on Brackman after the season, making him a free agent.

He picked the  sport he was less talented in, but having Herb Sendek as a coach would make any sane man want to play another sport.

Brilliant, brass didn’t have to break the bank to bring the Brack…

could be a good signing…I feel that he was mishandled, rushed too soon. Then never given a real shot at anything. To much, bullpen then starting then bullpen then starting. If a team is willing to give him time like a full year in one spot he could be decent. Although I see his true future as a swing man/ mop up long reliever. It might not be as glamorous as a starter or go to reliever but its a need and he can have a nice long career if done correctly

Blame his own greed for some of the “rushing”.  With a major league contract signed as a draftee, he really must develop or the signing money goes to waste for the Yanks.  Remember, overspending and wasting are two different things.
He also took quite long to comeback from TJ surgery and lost a lot of stuff than he did before the draft.
In the end, the major league contract, the risk the Yankees took when signing him knowing about the injury, and of course the overhyped Yankees prospects and first rounders overall made it seem like something has gone wrong, yet nothing really did.

He might still be a legit starter if his control somehow gets respectable.

Was there anyone else out there offing this guy guaranteed money? Sure, he is a former top pick and sort of has potential, but why not a minor league deal?

Because other teams were offering minor league deals too, and the Reds gave him a big league deal in order to make their offer more appealing than the other teams. Same happened with the O’s signing Matt Antonelli to a big league deal. Not big money, and the guy has options. I’d be alright with it if I was a Reds a fan.

He is also in a Andrew Miller type situation with the Reds.. No options, MLB deal and won’t clear waivers only Brackman definately is not ready, so how the Reds plan on hiding him on the big league roster is going to be the mystery come early April.

he will be on waivers as a final cut come the last of March, or a phantom injury will occur to hide him on the DL for a little while.

This MLB deal isn’t going to help him any at all.

I also didn’t like the Antonelli deal–and I am a fan of Antonelli.

Shame to see such an intriguing guy go.  Hopefully those two Rule-5 guys will amount to something, even a nice spring training story or two.

This deal was 99% done a month ago according to Walt. I wonder if he ever found out what held it up.

they probably had to make the doorway higher so that he could come in the room & sign the paper

Nah, they already raised it when Logan Ondrusek came in (he’s like a 6ft 10″ reliever). Clever, though. I like it.

Wish the kid luck, in his couple of MLB innings this year he looked to have added a Mo patented cutter that had great movement, would love to see him as a late inning guy.
