Heyman On Lannan, Rangers, Pirates, Padres

By Zachary Links | March 22, 2012 at 6:05pm CDT

Here’s a look at the latest from Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com..

  • The Tigers are still showing interest in Nationals left-hander John Lannan, Heyman writes.  Tigers people believe that they can find a solid fifth starter from the young pitchers that are competing for the spot, but owner Mike Ilitch’s win-now attitude could lead the team to deal for the Nats hurler.  Washington might be less eager to deal Lannan in the wake of Chien-Ming Wang’s hamstring injury but they could move Lannan and plug Ross Detwiler in the No. 5 slot.
  • The Rangers are in the market for a righty hitting outfielder, Heyman tweets.  Texas has plenty of pitching depth to dangle in front of teams but might prefer to hold on to their surplus.
  • The Pirates would like to shore up their catching situation and also add a lefty reliever to the mix, according to Heyman (via Twitter).
  • Padres’ CEO Jeff Moorad stepped down from his role because he realized that he wouldn’t have enough votes to back him, tweets Heyman.  Padres president and COO Tom Garfinkel is now set to assume CEO duties on an interim basis.

I don’t trust Oliver. I want Lannan. I wouldn’t mind packaging Turner and/or Smyly and getting anoth really good player.

no way those two for Lannan. You can prob do a couple of fringe  A or AA guys for him. He is average at best and not a upgrade just a stabilizer at the five you know like Penny.

Lol he wasn’t referring to them for Lannan. Might wanna reread that.

I guess I thought I read  “I want Lannan. I wouldn’t mind packaging Turner and/or Smyly and getting anoth really good player.” Meant he thinks Lannan is a good player and he would like to see him on the Tigers. My Bad.

if wer packagin turner/smyly together add another AA prospect, and illich/dombrowski should go after former tiger jair jurrjens…atlanta might take it..

only issue is that jurrjens is a free agent after this season…and we wouldnt be able to afford to resign him with anything higher than his current salary of 5.5 mill

I do not want Jurrjens. Especially for that price.

the rangers comment makes me think they’re looking for a platoon with Murphy for LF while allowing hamilton to play center on a somewhat regular basis….no likey.

regardless of what wash says, hamilton is not the best CF on the rangers, and he is by far the best LF the rangers have. detracting from two spots is not worth it imo.

Hamilton is the best CF we have. Where are you getting that from? Gentry is good and quick, but Hamilton still reads the ball better. Gentry is getting there, but he’s lucky that he has incredible speed to rely on in case he misreads the ball.

Lucky he has incredible speed? could you not turn that argument around just as easy….. hamilton is lucky he can read the ball better….. and gentry is by far the better CF not close

heyman is dumb thinking the pirates need to add another catcher. i wanna know where in the world he heard this considering they just added Barajas over the offseason (who was the top FA catcher in the offseason) and is adding power, great defense, and veteran leadership to the young club. AND they have big time fan favorite McKenry whos fairly young at 27 yrs old and is a rock behind the plate defensively and worked in the offseason with Hurdle to improve his offensive game. then you have to factor in that they have Eric Fryer and Tony Sanchez in the minors. so i dont know why in the world they need another catcher….but the lefty reliever i agree they need. Watson and Moskos have both been iffy during spring training so far

probably looking for a third or fourth catching option for depth to stache indianapolis considering morales has been hurt. As for the lhp I hope they take a flyer on Mike gonzalez

It’s already a sure thing that the Pirates will get Brian McCann from the Braves and Jake McGee as a lhp.  Just some more Mc’S to add to the mix.
