Knobler On Inge, Donald, Jimenez

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | March 30, 2012 at 2:15pm CDT

The latest rumors from Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com (all links go to Twitter)…

  • The Tigers have tried hard to interest the Phillies in Brandon Inge without much success. Inge offers steady defense at third and has been learning second base this spring, but he earns $5.5MM in 2012.
  • The Phillies tried to re-acquire utility player Jason Donald from the Indians, but Cleveland preferred to keep him. The Phillies drafted Donald in 2006 and sent him to Cleveland in the 2009 Cliff Lee trade.
  • Teams inquired on Ubaldo Jimenez this spring, but the Indians don’t have interest in moving him, either.
  • Scouts are watching Diamondbacks left-hander Mike Zagurski, since there’s a sense the Diamondbacks might trade him.

It appears the Brandon Inge saga in Detroit may well be coming to a rapid close.

    THANK GOD!

Inge was always a player I liked and always hoped the Astros would try and trade for, but I can honestly say now that I am glad I wasn’t (and will never be) a GM!  He had such a high ceiling and tons of talent, it just never came to fruition.

I’m surprised the A’s won’t take a chance on him if they can get Detroit to pay most of homeboy’s salary

As a tigers fan who watches all of the games, you can tell that Inge isn’t the player he used to be, but that doesn’t mean I want him gone, Inge has leadership and a clubhouse Precence that you can’t teach guys. When he came back to the tigers after his minor league stint last season, that’s when the tigers got going, he knows how to keep guys loose. He obviously isn’t worth 5.5 mil but I want him to stay around this season and then maybe sign him to a 1 year 1mil dollar deal next season, his leadership is something the tigers need.

couldn’t disagree more. he’s just taking up a spot that a younger more talented kid could fill. Tigers don’t need his “leadership”.

Strongly disagree. Inge is becoming more and more of a distraction.

I’d laugh in Ruben Amaro Jr’s face if the D-Backs get anything for
    Mike Zagurski.

If Illitch is willing to spend big bucks for long term on Fielder then I don’t see why they just don’t eat Inge’s contract.  V-Mart will have a more productive season not playing for Detroit than Brandon will.

the phillies should be forced to take inge after helping making him an underserved all-star in 2009 (over Lind and others). so they can see how terrible he is first hand before cutting him in july. this though would end a long line of very very very overpaid players by the tigers that got paid 7 or 8 figures their last yr in mlb while wearing a tigers uniform (ordonez, guillen, bonderman, robertson, inge, higginson, fielder in 7 yrs anyone?). if he goes to the phils he’ll be on the list of almosts though (sheff, willis, dmitiri and jaques jones that equals 50mil$ w/ nothing in return). pathetic organization! try developing a farm instead of spending 130mil$ to win the easiest division in mlb! pathetic! remember 2008, 2003 tigers fans! remember 1984, probabaly not!

Hahahaha you have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about. Tigers a pathetic organization, try developing players, verlander was drafted by us so was boesch, Avila, porcello and many others those are just stars. Then you look at our farm system we have avisail Garcia who reminds people of miggy, we have Jacob Turner, drew smyly, Andy Oliver, nick castellanos, and Casey Crosby who will all wind up as quality starters. So the next time you think to bash an organization you should probably do some research, by the way have fun with the phillies other than their rotation they are nothing but an overrated aging offense, and talk about overpaying, you got a closer for 4 years 50 mil that’s way overpaying for an average closer.

And one more thing did the tigers have a pitcher coming off of an MVP award in 08 and a 3-4 combo of two of the beat hitters in the game and not to mention valverdes 52 consecutive saves along with one of the bet setup men in the game in Benoit, by the way the tigers won a world series in 84 in case you were wondering

Jason, A lot of this roster is from the farm system! JV, Porcello, Avilia, Boesch, Dirks, Raburn, DK, and the rest are because of trades from the farm system/established Players,. We gained Fister, Jackson, Coke, Miggy, Schlereth, Schezer.. And all of those trades that we made you can argue that we got the better end of the deal.  The Only major pieces we signed via FA is Fielder, Valverde, and Vmart… Thats 3 out of 25 on the roster. So yes we have a high pay roll but its not because we went out and signed a team together, we got one MAJOR addition because we got one MAJOR injury, get your facts right

Brandon Inge inspires me. I truly believe I could replicate his many 0-5 games with 5 ks on check swings if I played in the majors. I know I couldnt go 0-5 wiht 5 groundouts, but 5 ks? Oh yea!
