The Latest On Roy Oswalt

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | May 24, 2012 at 8:42pm CDT

Free agent right-hander Roy Oswalt hasn't discussed a contract with the Red Sox or Rangers, according to the latest rumors. The Phillies have also been linked to Oswalt, who is expected to sign a new contract midseason. Here are the latest rumors:

  • Oswalt's preference is to play for the Rangers, Cardinals, or Braves according to ESPN's Jayson Stark, but there's no indication either St. Louis or Atlanta has interest. Stark hears that money is the most important factor, but Oswalt also doesn't not want to be a major media storyline wherever he goes.
  • Oswalt is on the Orioles' radar, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com writes. Orioles executive VP of baseball operations Dan Duquette said this week that he's looking for ways of adding pitching depth, so it's not surprising they're eyeing Oswalt. Teams other than the Orioles, Red Sox, Phillies and Rangers may be involved, according to Heyman.

This could be a really cool signing.  But will he come to Baltimore… doubtful

He will go where the money is.

Yeah, just like when he took the $10M deal from the Tigers in the off-season because he cared more about the money than about anything else, like pitching close to home for example.

          A. Didn’t take Tiger deal
          B. Only a rumor it was 10M. Probably not.
          C. Will get 7M for half a season.
          Smart to wait for injuries.
Don’t buy this hometown stuff. “where’s the money”

He didn’t want 5m either the rumors stated and supposedly still doesn’t want to pitch but a select few places.. detroit not being one of them..

Texas/St.Louie still where he is hoping against hope something will open up rotation wise down the road.. Money in some players case is not an object as hard as it is for some people on this planet to understand.. Those should go return to occupying the nearby sewers of a city near??

            A. It was sarcasm, he obviously didn’t take the Tiger’s offer, which was my whole point.
            B. It’s all rumors until it actually happens.
            C. That’s even less than a rumor, it’s your speculation.

Not smart to assume someone will take a chance on you after sitting out half a season, especially when guys like Hamels, Greinke, Wandy, and Garza will potentially be available, especially when you have multiple teams already offering you deals.

The only reason you would pass on those teams and take a chance that someone will be willing to give you a shot is because you aren’t getting deals from the teams you want them from.

I’m not a fan of Oswalt – I agree with you totally. If I were a GM, I would tell his agent that he should keep watching his kids at home.

He probably thinks he’s too good for the O’s. And before anyone asks, yes I don’t like Oswalt.

Not surprising, considering the way he’s massacred the Pirates over the years.

Wouldn’t doubt the Brewers are checking in with him, with the loss of Narveson, Estrada’s strained hip flexor and Marcum’s recent minor ailments.

Oswalt would be a nice addition to the staff. It would push Hunter to the pen and Eveland to AAA.

Orioles could use a veteran starting pitcher.

    I hope they do well.

Who seems more realistic for the Orioles signing/trading for? Really? Is it Oswalt or does it seem more real they could make a trade for Astros pitcher Wandy? I say Wandy. I think Oswalt goes to a team who has been in the playoffs the past few years. Which is Redsox/Phillies/Rangers. I am a Orioles fan but I don’t see this happening.

Wow, Hammel/Oswalt/Chen/Arrieta/Matusz? This would really give the O’s a chance, if the Braves don’t go after him I’d love to see Baltimore get this done.

With Britton on the way back soon …

When Britton comes back, Hunter is back to AAA. So let’s drink some orange kool-aid and assume that Matusz continues to throw the ball like he has in recent starts. Who, pray tell, would Oswald bump out of a rotation of Hammel, Chen, Arrieta, Britton, and Matusz? Keep in mind that Oswalt has never pitched in the AL, let alone the AL East, and had back problems last year.

Either Matusz or Arrieta would be sent down or an arm might go to the DL, Hammel’s knee has been banged up for a while.

Braves will get Oswalt. He’ll take a discount to come here since this is his favorite team and it’s close to home.

    Book it.
