Phillies To Sign Top Picks Watson, Gueller, Cozens

By Steve Adams | June 11, 2012 at 6:53pm CDT

6:53pm: Callis also tweets that the Phillies have signed their second-round pick Dylan Cozens, while Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer adds (via Twitter as well) that they've signed all three of their top picks at slot value. That means in addition to Watson and Cozens, Philadelphia has inked supplemental rounder Mitch Gueller (No. 54 overall).

Gueller, a prep right-hander out of Washington will receive $940,200. The Phillies received the 54th pick as compensation for losing Raul Ibanez. Cozens, a prep outfielder out of Arizona, will receive $659,800. Callis touts his athleticism and power.

6:08pm: The Phillies have agreed to terms with supplemental first round pick Shane Watson, according to Jim Callis of Baseball America (on Twitter).

Watson, a right-hander out of Lakewood High School in California, will receive full slot as the 40th overall pick — a bonus of $1,291,300. The Phils received the pick as compensation for losing Ryan Madson to the Reds. According to Callis, Watson can touch 96mph with his heater and also features a plus curveball.

Good signing. This kid’s breaking stuff looked filthy in the video MLB Network had on him.

Really excited for Cozens because it’s the first Philly I can ever remember having my name! Ha

I’m surprised at the bonus they gave to a prospect who wasn’t even top 200 by most accounts.

I think he had a strong football commitment.

If I remember correctly, Keith Law or Jayson Stark mentioned that he fell because he was kicked off his HS team for pushing his coach.

Even then, I was surprised he was given full slot. I thought they’d try to go under a little bit, considering he wanted to be a top 100 pick and pick #100 is valued at around $500,000.

I have played against Shane, he is a stud.  He also has a slider that will advance as he grows.  I think he will eventually replace Papplebon as a closer

Wow, thanks. Exciting to hear. So you picture more as a high leverage reliever than a starter?

Seems to have an interesting personality…could totally see the closer mind set.

The comments this kid made after he was drafted were classic. I’d say he’s confident in his abilities.

That said, I hope he doesn’t end up in the bullpen. Not that it would be a bad thing, I just would hope he develops as a starter.

How long until we can call them up. Anything is better than the product they have been trotting out on the field every night.

i Loved the signing and drafting of Dylan Cozens this guy is a Future Power bat. How much Power he broke Konerko HR record by 6Hrs in Arizona! He’ll probably move to first base.

Yeah he is a bulldog.  He has that swag that you need as a pitcher.  Phillies got a gem here, but dont expect him to be with the club in the next two years.  He is still raw.

I say he can start definitively, but my buddy’s dad is a regional scout and says they had him on his clubs board as a future closer
