Rays Designate Drew Sutton For Assignment

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | June 22, 2012 at 2:47pm CDT

The Rays designated infielder Drew Sutton for assignment, Roger Mooney of the Tampa Tribune tweets. The Rays claimed Brooks Conrad off of waivers, reinstated Jeff Keppinger from the disabled list, recalled Brandon Gomes, placed Matt Joyce on the disabled list and optioned Rich Thompson to Triple-A in related moves.

The Rays acquired Sutton from the Pirates for a player to be named about a month ago, shortly after the Pirates acquired him from the Braves. Sutton, 28, posted a .271/.314/.354 batting line in 51 plate appearances for the Rays this year. The four-year MLB veteran played first, second and third base.

Sutton was playing better then Sean Rodriguez. He should of been the one designated!

But the fans have some kind of weird attachment to him, and until 2008 weird attachments were the only things that brought fans to Tropicana Field.

Maybe the Pirates can claim him for 24 hours again, just to see if they can trade him.

Time to bring him back ATL! DFA Jack Wilson to make room

I agree, drew would be better than getting youk, and a hell of lot cheaper, plus we could get rid of wilson.

My opening day outfield for my fantasy team was kemp, berkman, and joyce. that’s worked out well

You should look at your roster again.  They are all on the DL!

Hoping the Twins pick him up. SS that can hit a little is always valuable. At worst he is a nice backup at ss/2b.

Are the Rays purposely trying to not be a good hitting team?

Maybe Sutton will be one of those cases where he’s the PTBNL and traded for himself. Bucs made a mistake giving him to TB while calling up Mercer, only to have Mercer rot on bench.

Atl needs him and get rid of Francisco. At least he’s a switch hitter, never understood why Wren got rid of him.
