Giants Closing In On Deal For Pence

By Tim Dierkes | July 31, 2012 at 11:21am CDT

Phillies right fielder Hunter Pence holds extra appeal since he's under team control for 2013, even if he could earn more than $14MM next year.  The latest:

  • The Giants are closing in on a deal for Pence, tweets Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.
  • The Pence to the Giants talk is pretty hot, tweets Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com.
  • Just prior to the Dodgers wrapping up their deal for Shane Victorino, ESPN's Jerry Crasnick tweeted that the Phillies were still discussing a Pence deal with the Giants.  They apparently are willing to trade two starting outfielders.

Good, there is still hope for Pence joining the Giants!
But regardless of what happens with the Giants and adding a bat, the Giants still need to strengthen their bullpen.

Barely top 100? He did have a rough start to the year in AA, but he has really been impressive since mid June. .607 OPS prior to June 13 and .950 since. A young player making adjustments like that is exactly what you look for, actually.

The Phillies gave up quite a bit to get Pence. I am wary of what the Giants could be considering trading for a guy who will be paid, IMHO, more than he is worth next season.

Except, Pence was playing better last year than this year. 10 more doubles, about 40 points higher on the OPS and 30 on the BA.

For Giants fans’ sake, let’s hope that is reflected in what they give up for him.

I’d be surprised to see a deal without getting Gary Brown back.

I think that is highly unlikely. Pence really doesn’t have much surplus value with respect to what he will be paid in arbitration next season. A top 20 prospect in baseball (per Kevin Goldstein, pre-2012) is far too much to give up, in my opinion.

Ed Wade might have won a trade. Unreal.

Dam* I wanted the Dodgers to get Pence and sign an extension not a Victorino rental

So the Dodgers got Victorino, the Giants are getting Pence and the Diamondbacks were rumored to be interested in Lee (even if it was a rumor) How crazy would it be if the third trade happens?

yeah no kidding. Perhaps Mayberry can use this time to learn where the friggin fence is when he’s running towards it.

I see the extra year of control as more of a burden than a bonus.

it says they are willing to trade two starting outfielder. so Pagan and Blanco in a deal for pence? that would explain Pagan being taken out of the game last night.

I think that refers to Philly being willing to trade both Victorino and Pence. Pagan came out of the game last night because he punched something and hurt his hand
