Reds, Blue Jays, Rangers Eyeing Matt Garza

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 30, 2012 at 10:56pm CDT

The Cubs agreed to two significant deals today, and they might not be done yet. They sent Paul Maholm and Reed Johnson to Atlanta in one trade and dealt Geovany Soto to Texas in another. Meanwhile, Matt Garza continues drawing interest despite a fluid buildup in his triceps that will keep him from pitching until after the trade deadline passes. Here are the latest rumors surrounding the right-hander…

  • The Reds are talking to the Cubs about Garza, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports. A team such as the Reds could complete a deal if it determines the injury is relatively minor.
  • The Cubs have tried to trade Garza to the Reds, but it's doubtful the sides will complete a deal, Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com reports (on Twitter).
  • The Blue Jays remain interested in Garza despite his current condition, Richard Griffin of the Toronto Star reports.
  • There's a "very high chance" Garza gets traded, ESPN.com's Jayson Stark reports (Twitter links). The Blue Jays have been bearing down on him. The Cubs are still trying to move Garza, Stark writes.
  • The Rangers and Blue Jays are interested, Bruce Levine of ESPNChicago.com reports.
  • The Cubs are fielding calls on Garza and working on a Ryan Dempster deal, David Kaplan of CSNChicago.com reports (on Twitter).

The Reds do NOT need Garza, period. Why would Jocketty help the Cubs rebuild and get stronger? We have Cueto, Latos, Bailey, Leake and Arroyo. The ONLY move the Reds need to make is, when Votto gets off the DL next week, DFA Cairo and keep X Paul as the LH OF and bench bat. Overbay doesn’t make sense either.

I think we do. Look at his previous stats..he won 15 games in 2010, and has a near mid 3 ERA for his career. Look at Leake..a guy who has an ERA in the mid 4’s. I like Leake alot. He’s young, and definitely has potential to be a solid starter in the future..but he isn’t reliable…when your in the playoffs you NEED reliability…and I think someone like Garza brings this to the table..just my 2 cents.

Garza will be a solid pitcher for your team. As a Cubs fan, though, he sometimes seems to be mentally lacking focus.

your point about Leake is well taken, but considering the Reds look like they have the division, how many time do you suppose their #5 starter will need to start in the playoffs? My guess is zero. Now if they feel they need Garza to lock down the division that would make more sense, but I don’t think it’s worth giving up prospects interdivisionally.

Doubt his “ploy” would work at all if you, as an uninformed outsider, can tell there is absolutely zero chance of his going to T.O.

Getting Garza might be the final piece of the puzzle for the reds to be a “true” playoff threat…Granted, I like Leake, he’s young, and he’s shown to be a good road pitcher than a GABP Bandbox pitcher..that said he’s a weak link. Playoff teams shouldn’t have weak links…Hopefully a package of Corcino + Henry Rodriguz + Leake should get things done.

The Rangers aren’t going to get far unless they add another pitcher. I’m not sure Garza is a good fit in that ballpark, though.

No. Dempster has been with the Cubs for almost ten years, and is as well-respected among other players as there is. If players see an organization deliberately and spitefully mistreat a player like that, just for exercising his no-trade clause, that absolutely sends a message around baseball. And trust me, I wasn’t happy with the vetoed Braves deal either, but you have to think about the future. What would you gain from making an example out of Dempster? Objectively and tangibly, nothing. Whereas there is a lot to lose by doing it. Just a foolish suggestion.

Don’t get too excited. The most Chicago could get from the Jays would be a Jenkins, McGuire, plus a couple of nobody prospects, if that. Garza would be a fourth starter on Toronto, even with the injury problems and Romero having a bad year. In 2013, it is Morrow, Romero, Alvarez, then Garza, if Hutch doesn’t pass him too, making him the fifth starter. You don’t give up anything special for Garza to be a fifth starter. In the AL, Garza wins in pitcher friendly parks, but he gets blasted in hitters parks, which is backed up by his 5.43 ERA – 12 – 27 record against Boston, New York, Texas, Anaheim, Detroit and Chicago.

        Are you serious?

Romero and Garza might be close, I’d be willing to give the edge to Garza because he’s never pitched as horribly as Romero has been.

Alvarez is nowhere near Garza, he barely reaches 3.0 k/9.

Morrow could be better, if he weren’t hurt every 2 months.

Right, Garza, who is under team control next year and will net a comp pick and the draft cash that goes along with it. Garza has always been the most valuable starter available due to the changes to comp picks in CBA. Not saying the Reds should give up Hamilton, but your comment is upside down regarding values.

I don’t know what Walt is thinking. I kind of like it though. You know someone is going to wear down and after seeing Leake struggle tonight maybe it wouldn’t be such a bad idea to see whats out there. Plus when playoff time comes you need 3 starters Cueto Garza Latos/Baily makes a lot more since.

Walt said nothing about Corcino, Cingrani, Gregorious, or HRod being untouchable. Sorry, the Reds GM said only Hamilton was ‘untouchable’ and that doesn’t even mean much if we’re blown away by an offer (i.e. something for Justin Upton).

Exactly, Hamilton will not being go back for Garza because the Cubs need pitching. If they trade for Garza, one or two of Cingrani, Corcino, and Stephenson have to be coming back (most likely one of the three)

And Hamilton doesn’t even have a true position, he is NOT a major league SS, not close and even the Reds will admit this… So what, he’s another fast CF prospect… ooooh, aaaah, gimme a break…

So I’m guessing if the Reds were to get Garza, then the rotation would be Cueto, Latos, Arroyo, Garza, Bailey? Or flipflop Garza and Arroyo. And I would assume Leake goes to the minors. Also, I wouldn’t mind seeing the Reds pick up Overbay for a PH/1B backup plan.
