Orioles To Sign Kevin Gausman

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 13, 2012 at 4:22pm CDT

4:22pm: The sides agreed to a $4.32MM bonus, ESPN.com's Keith Law tweets. The Orioles have announced their agreement with Gausman.

4:10pm: The Orioles have agreed to sign first round selection Kevin Gausman, the pitcher reports (on Twitter). MLB recommended a bonus of $4.2MM for the fourth overall pick and Gausman's bonus is expected to fall in that range, Jon Paul Morosi reported today.

Gausman has two premium pitches including a fastball that sits 94-96 mph and a plus change-up, according to Baseball America. The Louisiana State right-hander also throws a curve and a slider.

Kline also, the 2nd rounder.. His stock fell some after HS and attending UV, but what read on him is that he still sits low 90’s and tops out at 95.

         isn’t he a reliever though?

Freshman and sophomore season they had him relieving for some reason.. Last year he was back where he should have been (to me) in the rotation and 15 of his 16 games were as a SP, but yeah.. His Sophomore season he was the closer.

UVA Branden Kline (drafted this year) was a closer his sophomore season, but was in the starting rotation this year as a junior. Orioles have stated that they want to keep him as a starter for now.

UCLA Dan Klein (drafted 2010/3rd Rd) was a starter his freshman year, missed most (if not all) his sophomore year with an arm injury, and was used out of the bullpen his junior year. The O’s believe he has starter stuff and wanted to build up his arm strength, but he is missing this season having had surgery earlier this year.

Hope I got everything right, I believe everything is true based on my memories of what I have read.

Patience comes to those who wait and other than Manny Ramirez? The Duke does not like to overpay people..

Good ending to a nice 1st draft by Duquette.. Cheers to all the Orioles fans out there 🙂

Johnsliver I know I butt heads with you about the RS but I admire your loyalty to the RS. You seem like a good baseball guy, recognizing rivals success and future success pretty cool.

        Cheers & Thx.:-)

yeah.. Some reason we do have some issues now n then..

Same to you.. Guess we both think alike sometimes and gets in the way.LOL

        Edit:

should also admit am a “closet” orioles fan.. Have admired them at least since Earl Weaver managed them.. seems they have always won (when they did) on a shoestring budget.

It wasn’t $120K, as the team had been offering under $4M up until earlier this week.

Thank goodness.  While I would have liked Giolito better, Gausman makes a fine runner-up.

I wonder what negative thing Law had to say about the signing (or the pick itself), since we all know that in his eyes the Orioles cannot do anything right. It’s almost as if he went to the Orioles about a job and they turned him down.

I think it’s pretty clear that the orioles have indeed done little right.  Look at the last twenty years they haven’t done anything right except

exhaust #8 and everything the legend had. I like when teams look back

on their past players but they desperately need to look ahead and stop

venting about the past. It is sad that they will never have a guy like

Cal again because their whole system does not know how to handle and

develop guys. Hopefully the next twenty years are better than the

past. Then again anything has to be better
