The Giants and veteran Xavier Nady have agreed to a minor league contract, club officials told Andrew Baggarly of CSNBayArea.com. Andy Martino of the New York Daily News (via Twitter) first reported that the two sides were close to a deal.
Nady is taking batting practice with the club's Triple-A affiliate tonight and is likely to be activated tomorrow. The Nationals designated Nady for assignment in late July before granting him his unconditional release on Sunday.
The 33-year-old has been out of action since mid-June due to a wrist injury. Before that, Nady had a .157/.211/.275 slash line with three homers in 109 plate appearances for Washington. The veteran had interest from San Francisco over the winter but wound up inking a minor league deal with the Nats in March.

Good deal! Especially considering it’s minor leagues. It’s low-risk, high potential deal that could turn out like a Pat Burrel-esqu like outcome

Not likely but it could be the lightning in the bottle they could be looking for. If the Giants get a 40% of X-Man’s 2008 season it would be good signing. If he doesn’t make the team then no harm no foul.

Nady is no Pat Burrel. He’s more like DeRosa version 2.0.

Pat Burrell’s peak was a whole lot higher than Nady’s and in 2010 he was a lot less time removed from his last good season than Nady is now. I suspect signing Burrell again today would be more likely to have a positive impact on the team than signing Nady will. That said, its kind of a whatever move. I doubt he’ll be on the big league club before rosters expand and I doubt he’ll get more than a couple dozen at bats total. To me this is really just indicative of how difficult the Giants front office thinks its going to be to acquire any more useful players in August with the Diamondbacks and Dodgers both able to block players from reaching them on waivers.

Agreed. This is a no harm, zero risk deal for the Giants.

Low cost with the potential of a lot of upside (for the price). And if he doesn’t work out, oh well, it was just a minor league deal. No biggie. Looking forward to see how this plays out.

Even though Nady would be playing for a team competing against my Pirates for a playoff spot, I would like to see him make it back to the bigs and succeed. He’s been a nice complementary player and good guy to have in the clubhouse.

I like The X man as he can be a good bat off the bench. Xavier Nady has a good bat when he is able to platoon in a line-up. I think is a good signing for The Giants as Nady is worth a shot on.

Nady COULD be OK as a RH pinch hitter. The problem is that Bochy would use him as our new starting first baseman.

well you just need to be a bench player for the Rockies and Dodgers Xavier then you’ll have played for every NL West team.
