D-Backs Determined To Leave Orlando With Choo Or Trumbo

By Steve Adams | December 10, 2013 at 10:36am CDT

10:36am: Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register hears that there is "zero" chance the D-Backs would part with both Cahill and Skaggs to land Trumbo (Twitter link).

9:31am: One executive that spoke with the Diamondbacks came away with the impression that Arizona is getting Choo, tweets Andy Martino of the New York Daily News.

9:25am: Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports (via Twitter) that one potential Trumbo package that has been discussed would send both Cahill and Skaggs to the Angels, which would seem to be a tremendous haul for the right-handed slugger.

9:22am: The Diamondbacks are "determined" to leave the Winter Meetings with Shin-Soo Choo or Mark Trumbo, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post (on Twitter). According to Sherman, Choo's asking price is said to be in the range of Carl Crawford's seven-year, $142MM contract, and the Rangers remain in the mix. One thing working in Arizona's favor in regards to Choo is that the outfielder currently resides in Buckeye, Ariz., tweets MLB.com's Steve Gilbert.

The Diamondbacks emerged as players for Choo yesterday and are said to be involved in trade talks for Trumbo as well. Reportedly, names like Tyler Skaggs and Trevor Cahill have been discussed with the Angels in talks for Trumbo, who hit 34 homers last season but is seen as a below-average defender in the outfield and comes with OBP issues.

Phillies Willing To Discuss Hamels, Lee In Trades

By Steve Adams | December 10, 2013 at 10:20am CDT

10:20am: ESPN's Jayson Stark tweets that the only way the Phillies would move Hamels or Lee would be in a "win-win" situation in which they receivea huge return and shed the entirety of the remaining salary. In other words, a trade is unlikely.

8:18am: Jon Heyman of CBS Sports also hears that both Philadelphia aces are in play, but the Phillies won't eat any of the remaining money on either contract (Twitter link).

8:13am: The Phillies have indicated to other teams that they're willing to discuss Cole Hamels and Cliff Lee in trades, according to ESPN's Buster Olney (on Twitter).

General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. is apparently being quite open-minded at this year's Winter Meetings, as he's also said to be "actively shopping" Domonic Brown on the heels of Brown's 2013 breakout. Given the number of teams looking to acquire established pitchers, adding Hamels and/or Lee to a market that already includes David Price and Jeff Samardzija would give interested teams more options to choose from.

Hamels will be 30 at the end of this month and is guaranteed $112.5MM through the 2018 season ($22.5MM annually) with a $24MM vesting option for 2019. Though he started the season slowly, the left-hander posted a very Hamels-like 2.73 ERA from June 1 through season's end, finishing with a 3.60 ERA, 8.3 K/9 and 2.0 BB/9.

Lee, 35, will earn $25MM in each of the next two seasons and has a $27.5MM vesting option for the 2016 campaign. He pitched to a 2.87 ERA with 9.0 K/9 and 1.3 BB/9 in 222 2/3 innings, giving him a league-leading 6.94 K/BB ratio.

Orioles Considered Favorites For Grant Balfour

By Steve Adams | December 10, 2013 at 10:06am CDT

10:06am: The O's and Balfour have exchanged parameters, according to Kubatko (Twitter link). The Orioles are still haggling Balfour, tweets Jon Heyman of CBS Sport. As Heyman notes, Chris Perez and Axford are alternative options.

(Note: MLBTR misinterpreted Heyman's original tweet to mean that the O's are haggling with Perez and Axford, which is not the case. Thanks to Jon for the correction.)

9:28am: The Orioles haven't made a former offer to Balfour, but that step is likely coming later today, and Baltimore is considered the favorite to land his services, per Kubatko (on Twitter).

9:11am: The Orioles are "trying to get a deal done" with free agent closer Grant Balfour, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com tweets that Balfour and Baltimore are currently in talks, though no deals are in place. Eduardo A. Encina of the Baltimore Sun tweets that the O's have also met with John Axford's agents this week.

The Orioles traded Jim Johnson and his projected $10.8MM salary to the Athletics and have been said to be in the market for a more affordable closer. Balfour and Axford would both represent more affordable alternatives, though Balfour's price tag figures to be steeper than Axford's, as the latter of the two was non-tendered. The savings on Balfour may not be great in comparison to Johnson's salary, though Axford could certainly represent a significant cost-savings.

Relief Rumors: Tigers, Axford, Cubs, Mujica, Rox

By Steve Adams | December 10, 2013 at 10:03am CDT

Another busy day is shaping up at the Winter Meetings, and there's already no shortage of rumors regarding the relief market. The biggest news on that front is that the Orioles are considered the favorites for Grant Balfour, but here's the latest elsewhere on the bullpen market…

  • With Rajai Davis now in the fold in Detroit, the Tigers will shift their focus to bullpen upgrades, tweets ESPN's Jerry Crasnick.
  • Unless Joaquin Benoit gives up his pursuit of a closer job, the Tigers are out on him, tweets Jason Beck of MLB.com.
  • The Indians are one team that's been linked to John Axford, tweets MLB.com's Jordan Bastian, who notes that previous reports have linked him to the Orioles, Mariners and Cubs.
  • The Cubs are in on relievers, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, but a free-agent signing is more likely than a trade. The Cubs were linked to Drew Storen and Tyler Clippard yesterday.
  • MLBTR's Tim Dierkes hears (Twitter link) that the Cubs were in on Edward Mujica on a one-year deal prior to his two-year agreement with the Red Sox. Tim opines that Mujica may have been able to make more money in the long run that way — a sentiment with which I agree.
  • Last night, the Denver Post's Troy Renck reported that the Rockies are pushing to acquire a late-inning reliever, and this morning he reports that something could get done as soon as today (Twitter link).

Zach Links contributed to this post.

Jason Bay Has Offer From NPB’s Yomiuri Giants

By Steve Adams | December 10, 2013 at 9:47am CDT

MLB.com's Greg Johns tweets that Jason Bay could be heading to Japan to play with the Yomiuri Giants, and Jon Heyman of CBS Sports adds (also on Twitter) that Yomiuri has an offer out to Bay.

Bay, 35, is coming off a season in which he batted .204/.298/.393 with 11 homers in Seattle. The 2004 NL Rookie of the Year, Bay batted .280/.376/.519 over the first seven years of his big league career, but he's batted just .229/.314/.373 since that time.

Omar Infante Seeking $8MM+ Per Season

By Steve Adams | December 10, 2013 at 9:01am CDT

It's been fairly quiet on the Omar Infante front, but interest in the former Tiger should pick up now that Robinson Cano is off the board. Infante is the top remaining free agent second baseman, and he's already been linked to the Royals and Yankees in the past 24 hours. Here's our Tuesday rundown of Infante rumors…

  • Infante is reportedly seeking an annual salary north of $8MM on a long-term deal, according to ESPN's Buster Olney (Twitter link).
  • Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register notes (also via Twitter) that Infante's asking price likely impacts the market for the Angels' Howie Kendrick, who is owed $18MM over the next two seasons. Teams unwilling to meet Infante's asking price could look to Kendrick as a superior option.

Rakuten Golden Eagles President Traveling To Winter Meetings

By Steve Adams | December 10, 2013 at 8:37am CDT

Yozo Tachibana, president of Masahiro Tanaka's Rakuten Golden Eagles, will arrive at the Winter Meetings in Orlando today, reports Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports. Tachibana's appearance may lend some clarity as to whether or not Tanaka will be posted.

Passan adds that Rakuten owner Hiroshi Mikitani is one of Japan's most successful businessmen and is not known as one who will "kowtow to convention." As such, Tanaka's situation may not be as simple as merely honoring his wish and allowing him to pitch in the Majors. Rakuten can hold onto Tanaka, sell him on defending their Japan Series title despite a likely salary around $5MM, and post him next offseason. As Passan notes, even if Tanaka were to suffer an injury, teams may still be willing to gamble on a $20MM posting fee for him.

Major League executives remain split on whether or not Tanaka will be posted; one NL executive told Passan today that he thinks Tanaka will be posted, while an AL official told him he thinks Tanaka will remain in Japan.

Rajai Davis Close To Two-Year Deal With Tigers

By Zachary Links | December 10, 2013 at 7:49am CDT

Rajai Davis is close to signing a two-year deal with the Tigers, tweets Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports.  A report from Sportsnet's Ben Nicholson-Smith yesterday pegged the Tigers as the frontrunners for Davis, and Darren Wolfson of 1500 ESPN added that the Twins are also in the mix.  Morosi tweets that the Tigers are less likely to sign Shin-Soo Choo if they ink Davis.

Davis, 33, hasn't played in an everyday role for the Blue Jays over the last three seasons, but has seen enough action to rack up nearly 1,200 plate appearances, recording a .252/.299/.369 slash line. The speedster has also added 125 stolen bases over that period.

Since the Jays' season ended, reports on Davis have suggested that he'll likely leave Toronto and that he'll be seeking a starting role. An everyday job seems unlikely given Davis' struggles against right-handed pitching, but he'd make a solid fourth outfielder, a role which should give him the opportunity to earn plenty of at-bats, if his last few years in Toronto have been any indication.

AL East Notes: Rays, Price, Orioles, Red Sox

By Zachary Links | December 10, 2013 at 7:46am CDT

The latest out of the AL East..

  • One GM theorized to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (via Twitter links) that the Dodgers are in a favorable position to land Rays ace David Price. He believes that the Mariners won't give up Taijuan Walker and the D'Backs will say no to including Archie Bradley in a deal. L.A. can't offer a prospect as good as those two, but they can offer some combination of Corey Seager, Joc Pederson, and pitching. Based on yesterday's comments, Rangers GM Jon Daniels doesn't sound as though he's going to make a big play for Price.
  • Orioles executive vice president Dan Duquette remarked yesterday that he expected Rajai Davis to sign a deal "within the next day or two," leaving some to wonder if the O's are among the teams in the mix for his services. Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com looked into it, however, and found that Baltimore isn't in on him. The Twins and Tigers are interested, however, with one report calling Detroit the "frontrunners" for him.
  • Red Sox skipper John Farrell doesn't sound too upset about seeing Robinson Cano go to Seattle, writes Andy McCullough of the Star-Ledger. "He’s a guy that keeps you up at night trying to find ways to attack him." Farrell said. "But I’m glad he’s out of the East."

Winter Meetings Review: Day 1

By Zachary Links | December 10, 2013 at 7:00am CDT

With one full day of the WInter Meetings in the books, let's get caught up on everything that went down..

Transactions:

  • Roy Halladay is retiring from baseball.
  • The Marlins inked Garrett Jones to a two-year, $7.75MM deal.
  • The White Sox signed right-hander Felipe Paulino.
  • The Indians signed David Cooper to a big league deal.
  • The Mets made their signing of Curtis Granderson official.
  • Mark Prior officially retired and he may join the Padres' front office.
  • The Marlins officially announced the signing of catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia.
  • The Astros released Eric Thames so that he can pursue an opportunity in Korea.

Rumors:

  • The Marlins are telling teams they will trade Logan Morrison shortly.  A number of clubs have been connected to the 26-year-old.
  • The Yankees and Braves are among the teams that have shown interest in Cubs pitcher Jeff Samardzija.  One report indicates that it's unlikely that he'll end up in Atlanta, however.
  • A possible deal between the Blue Jays and Rangers hit a snag.
  • The Mariners, Rangers, and Dodgers are the three most serious suitors for Rays ace David Price at this time.  The M's believe that they could land Price if they were willing to include Taijuan Walker, but they're not willing to part with him at this time.
  • The Mets are exploring trades involving Ike Davis and Daniel Murphy.
  • The Twins are making a push for Bronson Arroyo.  The Pirates also scheduled a meeting with Arroyo's agent.
  • Chances of a Mark Trumbo trade are increasing and a dozen teams are in on the Angels slugger.
  • The Nationals are eyeing J.P. Howell and Scott Downs.
  • The Twins are in on Rajai Davis but the Orioles are out.  He's nearing a deal with someone, but we don't know who just yet.
  • If Masahiro Tanaka wants to make the jump to MLB, the Rakuten Golden Eagles may simply honor his wishes.
  • The Indians are open to fielding Justin Masterson trade pitches.
  • The Mets have kicked the tires on Chris Perez.
  • The Orioles checked in on the availability of Ethier and fellow Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp, but there were issues with the amount of salary that the Dodgers were willing to absorb.
  • Shin-Soo Choo talks are reaching a critical stage with the Rangers and D'Backs among the clubs in the mix.
  • The Pirates approached the Jays about Adam Lind, but talks quickly fizzled when Toronto countered by asking about Neil Walker.
  • Astros starter Lucas Harrell is drawing some trade interest.
  • The Red Sox feel like they have a good chance of retaining Stephen Drew since his market hasn't developed as he might have hoped.
  • The Padres have interest in Scott Downs, among other southpaw relievers.
  • Jamey Wright is choosing between the Rays and Dodgers.
  • The Phillies are actively shopping Domonic Brown.
  • The Orioles aren't expected to go after a high-priced starter.
  • The Mets have had internal discussions regarding Cesar Izturis and plan to meet with his agent in the coming days.  They're also unlikely to sign Bartolo Colon or Bronson Arroyo.
  • The Orioles met with Nelson Cruz, who is also a possible fit for the Mariners and Rangers.  The Rangers are comfortable with having Cruz back on a two-year deal, he wants three.
  • The Tigers are talking to free agents but GM Dave Dombrowski says they aren't in on the "big, big ones:.
  • The Nationals may or may not be shopping Danny Espinosa, depending on who you ask.
  • The Giants like Brett Gardner of the Yankees but a deal doesn't seem likely.
  • The Indians, who are in the market for a closer, have spoken to Grant Balfour.
  • The Cubs are looking to the trade market in their search for relievers and have eyed both Tyler Clippard and Drew Storen of the Nationals.
  • The Indians and Orioles have interest in Jason Hammel.  MLBTR's Tim Dierkes learned that a dozen teams are in the mix.
  • The Brewers are making Corey Hart a priority.
  • The Rangers are still open to dealing Elvis Andrus even after trading Ian Kinsler, but it's a longshot.
  • The White Sox are looking to move a starter.
  • The Orioles are one of many teams with some interest in Johan Santana.
  • Matt Kemp probably won't be headed to the Red Sox, the Dodgers remain in discussions with four teams on trade possibilities involving him or Andre Ethier,
  • The Rockies want a reliever and they've shifted their focus from the free agent market to the trade market.
