Indians Designate Jerry Sands For Assignment

By Zachary Links | May 31, 2015 at 11:51am CDT

The Indians announced (via Twitter) that they have designated Jerry Sands for assignment.  In a related move, Carlos Santana has been reinstated from the paternity list.

Today’s move marks the second time this year that Sands has been DFA’d by Cleveland. Sands’ first assignment came roughly one month ago when Sands was bumped in favor of right-hander Ryan Webb. Sands wound up getting outrighted and accepting his assignment rather than going elsewhere.

Sands has not received much opportunity at the big league level since a solid run at age 23 with the Dodgers when he slashed .253/.338/.389 in 227 plate appearance.  This year, he hit quite well in a limited sample size of 27 big league PAs while also performing well at Triple-A.  In 91 plate appearances for Columbus, Sans hit .257/.385/.473 with four homers.

As MLBTR’s DFA Tracker shows, Jerry Sands now joins Thomas Field, Grady Sizemore, Marc Krauss, Sergio Santos, Eric Stults, Alejandro de Aza, and Radhames Liz in DFA limbo.

This guy has earned his right to stay yet is discarded as trash. Someone needs to play this guy in a Platoon.

He’s been awfully mediocre for the most part in the few seasons prior to this one, even at AAA, and 4 different organizations gave up on him since August 2012. He has power and potential, but may not have the consistency to be any better than he is now, a “AAAA” fill-in.

They brought him up and he homered. Then they designated him. What does a guy have to do?

Whew, If he didn’t just hit that HR yesterday, they may have euthanized him.

They are a funny organization. He won them a few games at the beginning of the year. They DFA’d him. Yesterday his 2 run HR was the difference in the game. They DFA’d him again. I watch what they do and can’t believe it at times.

I remember when the Pirates got this guy in the Hanrahan deal and thinking he was going to be the best part of that deal, shows how much I know.

He’s the reason Boston now has Brock Holt. Best of luck to you, Jerry.
